Is there a UK release date yet? I wonder if they will do more press/a premiere when it's released there because I'd imagine it's one of the bigger markets for Woody Allen movies.

Hm, I don't think there is a release date listed for the UK, yet.

Great news, Midnight in Paris is now officially Woody Allen's highest top grossing film.

Quote:

The specialty film’s cume through Friday is $40.4 million, beating “Hannah and Her Sisters.”

The boy wizard, a.k.a Harry Potter, wasn’t the only film breaking records at the domestic box office on Friday.

Sleeper hit Midnight in Paris has become Woody Allen’s top grossing pic of all time in North America, a sizeable victory for the filmmaker and Sony Pictures Classics.

Starring Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams, Midnight in Paris grossed as much as $500,000 on Friday, pushing its total to $40.4 million and overtaking Hannah and Her Sisters, which cumed $40.1 million in 1986 (not accounting for inflation).

Midnight in Paris is the rare specialty title that catches fire with general audiences. The movie opened in only six theaters on May 20 to score one of the best location averages of all time ($99,834) at the domestic box office. At its widest point, the film played in more than 1,000 theaters. Its current count is 700.

In the film, Wilson’s character discovers an alternate reality while in Paris with his wife. Sony Classics’ Michael Barker and Tom Bernard say there are several reasons why the film is resonating.

For one, the movie embraces Paris in a way that appeals to anyone who has either visited the city, or wants to visit. And Wilson plays the sort of “everyman” character that a moviegoers tend to see in more mainstream films, versus in arthouse titles (or in an Allen’s film). It also helps that critics across the country — and not just in New York — have given Midnight in Paris great reviews.

Midnight in Paris is Sony Classics’ No. 2 top grosser of all time after Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which earned $128.1 million domestically.

Overseas, Midnight in Paris has earned a strong $33.5 million, for a worldwide total of $73.9 million to date.

And I honestly don't expect UK promo, the European press was there during Cannes so magazines/websites will probably publish their interviews of cannes when the movie gets released in their own country.

That's great. Thanks for bringing it over :)

That's amazing. :D

I so bumped I still haven't seen it since the release is in September were I live. The movie does however open one of the biggest film festivals over here which is exciting! I think the box office over seas is going to grow even more since the releases are until December of this year.

Love the fact that this is a surprising hit of the summer in North America.

Are you fan of Woody's movies? :)

yetigreen 07-18-2011 07:58 AM

I've seen Manhattan, Annie Hall, Vicky Christina Barcelona and Match Point - his movies have a really distinctive style. MIP still hasn't come out where I live.

lindsey, unfortunately I think you're right! I know Jonathan Ross interviewed Rachel at Cannes but the video hasn't shown up and that must be why.

kobechrome 07-24-2011 02:06 PM

I've only seen Match Point but I loved MIP and am not surprised its doing well. It doesn't hurt that Woody used many mainstream actors/actresses for his lead roles as well.

Finally, Woody Allen’s “Midnight In Paris” continued its momentous run, dropping from 399 to 328 theaters in its whopping 13th weekend but losing just 31% of its grosses. Taking in $675,623, Allen’s 42nd feature averaged a strong $2,060 and took its total to a stunning $49,636,944. The $50 million mark is all but assured for the Sony Classics release in the next week or so.

It's still going strong! And the movie is still expanding over seas as well. I still haven't seen it, I mean it's released here in September.

yetigreen 08-16-2011 01:47 AM

Me neither. I think it's online now but I want to see it on a big screen.

winterbird 08-16-2011 01:56 AM

^ Yes it's online, but I am not going to see it. I agree, want to see it on the big screen.
