It's funny, because both of them trying so hard to force it when they weren't enjoying it at all, shows that they actually were a lot alike!

^ That's a great idea! I think the best way for them to make a connection was to stop pretending/acting like they were making a connection. Clearly that wasn't working for them. Their best course of action was to tell each other the truth, that they really wanted to make a connection but they didn't know how. They needed to make the effort to keep talking and keep spending time together, and eventually they were going to find interests that brought them together and bonded them as brothers.
