I honestly don't know.... maybe the writers wanted it to come across that Jack & Rachel were in love & they thought the best way to do that was to have Eric say so

^ Yeah, or maybe it was TPTB's way to confirming that what Jack and Rachel had was more than just a kiss. Eric knew both of them so well, and if he recognized that they were in love, then maybe we would believe it too.

Me neither. Even though I thought they had the potential to be a good couple, I didn't think they were at the in love stage of their relationship.

Me either, they were friends, & then suddenly we were expected to believe that they were in love. It was too abrupt, & you can't just earn that kind of thing after a couple kisses - there needs to be more to show romantic feelings then that, longing looks, deep conversations, other signs of physical affection etc.

^ I agree with your post. There didn't seem to be any build-up from friendship to romance between them, which is necessary for viewers to believe such deep feelings. I could have believed that Rachel seeing how crushed Jack was by Chet's passing made her see him a new light, but I didn't quite believe Eric's assessment that they were in love after seeing them kiss.

No, it just didn't work for me - & I think a lot of the audience felt the same way, not sure if I've ever seen anyone shipping them

^ I think I shipped them a little, and I may have been a little disappointed when they casually mentioned that they had broken up between the two seasons...but I think I will feel differently about them if I re-watch the episodes now.
