Do you think part of them expected that they wouldn't be able to enjoy the big news by themselves, that someone or something would come along and their celebration of two would add more people to it?

I think they definitely wanted it to be a private celebration, but they probably should have known better then to go to the same hotel where prom was being held

^ Yeah, that was definitely a bad idea to go to the same hotel.

Maybe they thought they could have their celebration without their children finding out that they were there in the first place.
