After falling off the roof at a New Year's Eve house party, Owen decides that it's time to make some wholesale changes in his life. Over the next year, he quits drinking, re-enters his estranged son's life, reignites old friendships, and falls in love with Vera, a bank teller and fellow divorcee...all in an attempt to replace members of his family who he'd lost prematurely. Owen, a vending machine proprietor, soon finds that sometimes in life, you just need a little change.

Summary:
It's New Year's Eve and Owen finds himself in a hospital emergency room, with a broken arm. In a voiceover letter to a mysterious Jen, Owen admits that if the old adage about 'what you're doing on New Year's Eve is what you'll be doing all year' is true, he doesn't think he'll survive the year.
Recounting his day, we are introduced to the characters who play pivotal roles in his life - his caustic ex-wife Cindy, his neglected tween son Adam, his border-on-predatory cousin Kenny, his old friend Angie and her quadraplegic brother Todd, his drinking buddy Pete, his soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend Pam, and the enchanting, lovely, and newly divorced Vera. Drunk and alone in the hospital after falling off Pete's roof, Owen, a vending machine owner/supplier resolves to make some changes in his life.

Over the next twelve months, Owen starts to get his life back on track. After learning of Cindy's plan to move to California with Adam, Owen tries to reconnect with his son. He takes in his felon cousin and Kenny's brother, Vicotr, when he is released from minimum security prison. He invites Angie and Todd to move into his house when their father passes away. And he begins to fall in love with Vera. But when shades of his troubled past jeopardize his relationship with both Vera and Adam, Owen decides that he needs to quit drinking.

After learning an awful secret about Kenny from Victor, Owen has a confrontation with his cousin...one that ends with deadly consequences. This event ends up strengthening Owen's resolve and he finally comes to terms with his responsibilities as a man, a father, and a boyfriend. For most of his life, Owen has only opened up his inner thoughts and feelings to Jen, who we learn was his twin who died at childbirth. But thanks to the new family that he has surrounded himself with, by the next New Year's Eve, Owen is indeed, a better man.
