I watched the solo surgery epi last night and noticed that at the beginning of the epi Bailey told the residents that she won the first solo surgery back in her days because she didn't cuz LVADs, put her hands into bomb-filled bodies or let her interns cut themselves. so there was acutally a little hint at the beginning that it could be Alex winning the surgery....and he DID

Hey-- thanks for posting this connection! One of my favorite things about Shonda (and there's quite a long list of least favorite things

, so lately I'm trying to concentrate on my list of most favorite things! hehe

) is that she does hint at what's to come in small moments... and makes statements in small moments, but often it's hard to see them until you've seen further down the road, and then come back to them.... Seriously, that is one of my fave things about this show!
After reading your post, I do remember that scene... boy, does Bailey have a way of just nailing the Fab 5 to the wall-- she loves them all, but she does not let them forget that their actions always have long term consequences...
I was so pleased when Alex won his solo... it was so good to see things go well for him professionally, and to see how that really made a difference to him personally...

It never surprised me that Alex won. After Cristina had to choose who would do it, it made sense she would pick him. Meredith was too obvious a choice; Izzie had shown no interest in surgery all season; and giving it to George would involve Shonda giving TR a bit of a storyline - and she was apparently dead-set against that.

But I won't go there... Too much anger

So, yeah, Alex was kind of the underdog who had kept his head down and done his job and grown more capable as a doctor. He totally deserved the solo.

I agree with you guys that Shonda does sometimes do a good job of hinting at future plots. I have mentioned before in the AI thread about the episode way back in Season 1 or Season 2 when Alex and Izzie took care of a cancer patient and Izzie asked Alex if he would still find her attractive if her body had aged 10 years from chemo or if she lost her breasts. And then we saw in the 100th episode that he was the one to encourage her to shave off her head and he told her she looked gorgeous bald. So while their conversation back in Season 1 or 2 may not have been a direct foreshadowing of Izzie's cancer, it was a nice way of setting up that Alex would find her sexy no matter what.

That's something I've been constanly thinking about since the cancer storyline. Like you said it's quite unlikely that Shonda planned this way back in season 2 but it's nice to see that Alex meant what he said at the very beginning of their relationship.

and another thing that I've noticed is that nobody was actually calling George 007 anymore for the last few seasons but in the solo surgery epi someone called him that (I think it was Alex). and then again in the finale everybody started saying 007 again...I think that was also a reminder for the viewers so that they get what was happening with George...

I never doubted that Alex meant what he said-- he loves her so. It's nice, too-- that Shonda tied back to it, even though it's not likely that she had planned it way back then, she did tie back to it. That is the beauty in her writing. It really truly is. And when she stays true to character and true to connection, while growing these characters, she is SO ON. I so hope that she is right when she says that she has found her love and inspiration for writing Grey again b/c when she's on the mark, it is magic... I only hope that she fully realizes that MAGIC is necessary to keep her Grey magic alive.

Well, I could speak volumes, of course, but since it is an Alex thread, not a George one, I will leave it at this... I'm glad they brought back in 007... I think Shonda made some bold statements in the finale about George and about his growth and about that 007 stigma. 007 use in the finale changed, though... instead of being about that stigma, she made a statement against that stigma (and how they all seem to have viewed George- except Iz, of course) and changed the use of the label to be more of a connection, a link of relationship to the others... There was much Shonda was saying in all of them not seeing that John Doe was George.... they haven't been seeing George. Who knows, maybe even Shonda stopped seeing him for a while

I know she sees him now... I just hope he is not gone (I really don't think he is, actually).

But anyway... back to Alex...

I totally agree with you. and I think Shonda stopped seeing George for a while on purpose. I don't like gossiping but it's obvious that these two have differences.

Also in 5.18 Bailey mentioned getting married in Vegas, shacking up with attendings and cutting LVADs. It looks like Bailey never had to worry about Alex (in his personal life)

Alex had a lot of issues, but mostly his attitude and nothing major like the others.
