Ellen Pompeo made her major studio screen debut in Brad Silberling's Moonlight Mile, starring alongside Susan Sarandon, Dustin Hoffman and Jake Gyllenhaal. She received outstanding reviews for her portrayal of an outspoken young woman carrying a silent burden that's breaking her heart. A native of Boston, Pompeo was most recently seen starring opposite Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell in the wildly successful Old School and, before that, in Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Prior to Moonlight Mile, Pompeo starred in several independent features, including In the Weeds and Coming Soon, and she can also be seen in the upcoming Glory Days.

Right now she's starring in the hit series 'Grey's Anatomy' as Dr. Meredith Grey.

I am really shocked by KH, Ellen has been criticized for pun’k and we known that she knew she was trapped from the beginning!

KH has no excuses, I find her attitude disrespectful towards the fans.

I'm happy that people who were at the benefit made only good comments about Ellen, she stayed longer and she made her fans happy.

I really do hope we do get a video everyone was saying she was the one who stayed around the longest for everyone, so nice to know. She even took a second picture with someone when they're first one didn't turn out good, it was blurry...she's just so amazing.

I noticed people keep bringing up other actors in this thread. I'm sure y'all know that this thread is here to appreciate Ellen and her work and not to compare her with her costars and ex-costars. They each have their own strengths and weakneses and we're not here to determine who's better or worse. We've let it slide in the old thread but let's stay on topic, please. Thank you.

I saw Kristin Dos Santos chillin’ like a villain during intermission, so maybe she will have a report up on E! Online.

Mom & I meant to leave at 5:30pm, but she only got home at 6, so we left late, and I was afraid we’d get stuck in traffic on the way there & end up missing something. BUT we got there with 20 minutes or so to spare, and even though the concert was scheduled for 8, it didn’t start until 8:15. A lot of people had their cameras, even though they weren't supposed to, so I'm sure photos will be popping up online here & there.

Which left me with time to read Shonda Rhimes’ note in the program (shiny, and printed on actual cardstock instead of regular paper!), which thanked several people, including Marti Noxon, for the work they did in getting the show to come about. I was so excited about seeing all the cast members perform, that I totally forgot Marti Noxon was involved with Private Practice, so after reading that, I kept an eye out for her. She came in with a bunch of other writers just before they dimmed the lights to signal the start of the performance, and she was even tinier than I remembered her to be from Comic Con last summer. I pointed her out to Mom (who said that she wants to watch the Buffy musical episode with me).

I had wondered what they were going to do between musical numbers, and basically, it was some patter about what the jobs of the different crew members are (with a running joke that no one really knew what a ‘best boy’ was), as well as some readings of examples of “fan mail” and “fan fic”.

It was two acts with an intermission, and each act was kicked off with a video message from each of the two stars that couldn’t make it. Patrick Dempsey reported in from Japan, where he’s promoting Enchanted (“coming soon to DVD”). He wore sunglasses indoors, held a glass of wine, and pretended to be speaking on his cell phone as the video opened. He thanked the crew members, because without them, people would only remember him as the geeky guy from Can’t Buy Me Love (“also available on DVD”). Kate Walsh reported in from Australia, where she’s promoting Private Practice (“Hi LA, this is Kate!”), while laying on a massage table and admonishing her masseur not to “knead”. They were both really sending it up with the shallow actor bit, and it was adorably cheesy. In fact, they had all the actors kind of play up to that role throughout the show.

Katie Heigl started off the live portion of the show, saying how important all the crew members were to the show… except maybe the hair and make-up people, because, really, she practically does that herself, anyway (enter onstage a grumpy-looking guy holding a blowdryer), and also script writers, because of course she can come up with lines herself (enter onstage a grumpy-looking guy holding a sheaf of papers), and lighting, because how hard can that really be (the stage goes dark). Then she introduced the first musical act, Sara Ramirez.

Sara book-ended the show by performing the very first musical number, as well as the last one. The first song she sang was ‘Meadowlark’, and it was freakin’ amazing. She got an enthusiastic standing ovation from the entire audience.

Then Ellen Pompeo came on, and her speech introduced the running best boy gag by having her pretend to blank out on it mid-sentence, and Chandra Wilson came running onto the stage, and whispered into Ellen’s ear. “Ohhh!” said Ellen. “She doesn’t know, either!” Then she introduced her idea of the best boy, TR Knight.

Before he launched into his musical number, TR said that he just had two quick things to say: first, that he hadn’t actually done anything like this in about 13 years, and second, “I’m following Sara Ramirez.” He sang a combination of ‘Losing My Mind / You Could Drive a Person Crazy’ and it was bouncy and funny and it warmed my heart that he was comfortable enough to turn some of the lyrics of the song into sort of a punch line about being gay (since it always seemed to me that he was sort of forced to come out, which is not cool). Some of the lyrics in 'You Could Drive a Person Crazy' were switched around so that the word 'fag' was replaced by the word 'gay'. There was a brief beat of silence in the tempo during the transition between the two songs, and some of the audience started to applaud, so TR held up a finger, like, waiiiit for it!

Eric Dane & Brooke Smith came out, and talked about being n00bs on an established show, saying that when she came on, Eric advised her straight away to learn all the names of the crew. Brooke said that no way did Eric know the names of all the crew members, so he said, “Quiz me.” Brooke asked about the script supervisor (“I call her ‘Baby’.”), the camera operator (“Buddy”), and the craft services person (“Hey, you!”).

Chandra Wilson came on, and she sang ‘God Bless the Child’ (which she also sang on the show), and she was totally getting into Jazz Diva mode, doing a little bit of scat singing, interacting with the sax player, and everything. It seems to me like she maybe had the most fun of any of the performers the whole evening. She was wearing a sleek black dress with a really classic silhouette, which I have to say looked way better on her than pretty much anything else I’ve seen her wear to awards ceremonies.

Then Amy Brenneman came on, and her speech basically went “Private Practice has crew members, too”. She was very cute, and had nice hair.

Then Paul Adelstein came on, said, “And now for something completely different,” and sang (and played!) ‘Slip Slidin’ Away’ by Paul Simon. The audience let out a collective squeal when he picked up his guitar. Other than ‘God Bless the Child’, this was the only song of the night that I was really familiar, and I enjoyed it very, very much.

Chandra, Paul, & Eric then did “fan mail”. Chandra’s was a Mer/Der letter, and Paul had one describing possible mates for every single character of Private Practice (except Cooper), and he inserted little asides about how he could play the potential lover(s) for each female, and talked about how he was way better than any of the male characters (he made fun of the size of Chris Lowell’s nipples). Eric’s letter was about how hot Dr. Sloan is, and how there should be more plotlines involving him with less clothes, including a possible plotline about how the air conditioning could go out at the hospital, and Sloan would be forced to operate shirtless, or else lose a patient. He saluted the audience as he left the stage.

Chyler Leigh played the clueless actress to Justin Chambers’ veteran actor as they introduced Audra McDonald.

Audra’s first song is listed in the program as ‘Somedays’ (I have the feeling the songs she sang were different than the ones listed), and it showed off her very impressive lung capacity and possibly the fact that she was an auctioneer in a previous life. It’s a bouncy song about a woman who’s just fallen in love and “can’t stop talking about him”. Everybody kept making sure to mention her FOUR TONY wins throughout the evening.

Then came the intermission and Kate’s video message. Taye Diggs come out to continue the best boy jokes, and asked you to remember him “at the polls later this year” at mark your ballot for him as “the best boy ever.” And then the huge diamond stud in his ear twinkled at me.

Loretta Divine walked onto the stage in a fluttery, light-colored ensemble (pretty much all the women wore black, except she & Katie Heigl, who wore red) and big curly hair, and belted out ‘I Believe in You and Me’ before leaving the stage in a rush at the end of the song. (I think after the time spent on Sara’s standing ovation at the very beginning of the evening, the singers were making sure to leave the stage quickly so that the program could keep going on a steady pace.)

And then came Chris Lowell & Tim Daly, and they sort of had the same dynamic going as Chyler & Justin, with Tim Daly talking about the nice lady who sat down with a coloring book at all the script read-throughs, and Chris corrected him by saying that was the script supervisor, who makes all the notations about the technical details of shooting the script for every episode. Chris was wearing a skinny tie with his suit, and he was the only person all evening who brought out a cup of water with him to the podium.

Then they brought Paul Adelstein & Amy Brenneman back onstage with them, and Amy carried out a tambourine, and a hat, which she gave to Chris. They reminded the audience that they were not actually Broadway-caliber singers (“We each auditioned for Broadway once.”), and Chris said, “Just clap really loud.” Chris, Amy, & Paul sang the song ‘California Stars’, featuring Tim on guitar, Paul on the piano, and Chris on the harmonica (which got some whoops from the audience when he pulled it out of his pocket). The song had a feel-good, retro-folk-ish vibe, and during an instrumental section, Amy & Chris danced together, and it was kind of the most adorable thing ever.

After the song, James Pickens came onstage in a silver cape and wig, and began to do a James Brown impersonation to a track of ‘I Feel Good’. It makes me sad that the Chief is so serious all the time, because it was hilarious. He has some skills they’re not using on the show. Then Loretta came on, and chewed him out for doing a lip-sync, and said if he wasn’t going sing, he’d better find someone who would. So James introduced his wife, Gina Taylor-Pickens, who did a pretty kickass rendition of ‘Dr. Feelgood’. She got a partial ovation when her song ended.

Then came the “fan fic” segment. Sara, Justin, Sandra read the first “fan fic”, reading their characters’ lines as well as the narration pertinent to their character. I kind of loved Sandra Oh’s narrator voice. She should do more voiceovers. Their fanfic was about a “lycan” invasion at Seattle Grace. (Which, by the way, thanks Grey’s writers for giving me a plot bunny that is now going to incessantly hop around in my head, nibbling at the grass and dropping pellets everywhere.) TR & Katie Heigl read a “fan fic” that was a romance about Lord George and Isobel, the governess of his sister’s children. There was a mention of Lord George’s “taut thighs”. They did a lot of posturing on the stage as they read it, and it was cute. Katie interrupted the reading to mention that she remembered who the best boy was -- someone from eighth grade who had given her the best kiss ever. Then TR got mad at her for ruining the reading of the fanfic. (“I don’t think we should be friends anymore!” “Fine.” “Fine!”) They stormed off opposite sides of the stage. Sandra came back on, and gave the technical definition of a best boy, and introduced to the audience the best boy for Grey’s.

Audra McDonald came on again, and sang a song listed as ‘It’s the Christian Thing to Do’. She said she wanted to do because it reminded her of the character of Addison. (And I can see why it would, since it's about a woman who kind of has baby fever.) It was a very slow, bittersweet song compared to the one she sang earlier, and really showed off her versatility as a performer. FOUR TONYS.

Shonda Rhimes came on to introduce what was listed in the program as the “Special Mystery Musical Guest”, who turned out to be Patty Griffin, specially flown in from Texas, who performed ‘Up to the Mountain’, which had Shonda mentioned had been featured in the last aired episode of Grey’s. It was really beautiful.

Then EVERYONE came back onstage (Chris Lowell was still wearing the hat!) to thank everyone for coming, and TR thanked the band and other musicians who’d played with the singers that night, and got their names all confused and was flustered and cute. As they cleared the stage for Sara to perform the last song, everyone who walked past Sara gave her a pat on the arm or shoulder, and TR gave her a hug.

The last song of the evening was ‘Grateful’, and Sara’s version was very moving. It got a standing ovation too, but it was also sort of applause for the entire show, and people getting up, preparing to leave.

AND THEN IT WAS OVER.
