I'm at a point where I don't see how they can make this work long term without making the mess worse so I don't care all that much, if they don't, why should I?

There isn't really one. No one gives up on a marriage after one fight, not without serious discussion, and we can't see that happening with no Dawson there. If she didn't go then they need to explain why we're not seeing her. If she goes to give them some space they need to explain why she's just not coming back. Nothing really works, especially not permanently.
