Obviously Mark is not a good writer, lol, but in general I think teen shows should probably steer clear of school shooters unless they are very, very careful. It's a deeply complex situation. It's a complex psychosis.

And really, we should always be careful how we depict school shootings and how often we do it, knowing how they are always looking for attention and ways to outdo each other. Sometimes mass shooters in general are more complex - I honestly have no idea what was driving the Las Vegas shooter - but school shooters are a...certain type.

While I'm not sure it mattered specifically with such a little show like OTH, in general, let's just...not give them more ideas. In OTH's situation, let's not perpetuate a dangerous stereotype about bullied, depressed, outcast teens.

Mark had no issue doing that though

It was frustrating because we need to be concerned FOR these kids, not scared of them for the most part.

We had this kid my sophomore year of high school who was extremely isolated, apparently bullied (I was in a weird spot where I had plenty of friends, an active social life, and was rarely harassed, but I was not at all in the classic popular crowd, so I was only vaguely aware of the school bullies), and had no friends. He died by suicide An unfortunately terribly common outcome.

It never seemed to occur to him to hurt anyone else - he just didn’t want to live anymore. That’s often what happens when kids are that isolated. They are rarely violent.

I worry that our ongoing attempt to single out kids who are already outcasts as potential shooters only further isolates them and opens them up to more bullying.
