I think procedural shows are often better at handling cast changes, too. Teen shows rely more on connections to characters.

No, older men don't really get teen boys, but they REALLY don't get teen girls, lol. It's all through a limited lens of whatever they thought of girls when they were younger, which often isn't...good.

How did they get it worse?

Glee was so offensive in so many ways. The writing for Santana was insanely offensive. It was seen as okay to bully Rachel because she was annoying, while doing School Special episodes on the horrors of bullying with Kurt (who was gay). Brittany was so stupid, she almost appeared to be handicapped. Mercedes was rarely seen as anything other than a token. MESSSSSSSS.
