Thread Tag Rules

When it comes to tagging your board, it's quite simple. Follow the rules below and then just keep up the tagging!

Tagging helps to highlight popular topics at Fan Forum, and it can also be used as a search function.
  • Generally use the singular form, such as "post count", "game", "picture" etc.
  • Use full names for actors or character where possible.
  • If an actor or show has a board here, tag how it is listed at Fan Forum.
  • No movie character names. The only exception to this is when that movie/franchise has a board here, i.e katniss everdeen is fine since we have a Hunger Games forum.
  • Don't use "thread", "general" or "forum" in a tag name.
  • Game threads should use "game" + the title of the game.
  • Friends should only be used for the Friends TV show related tags. Friendship is to indicate that it is a friendship thread.
  • Use only one (1) combination shipper name, such as Mash or Serendipity.
  • Use only one (1) way to list couples and friendships. "John/Bill" is sufficient, you do not need "John/Bill", "Bill/John", "Bill and John" and so on.
  • Don't tag the episode discussion threads with the episode title, this creates a lot of unnecessary tags.
  • Before you tag, check to see if a similar tag exists. You can do this at the Tag Cloud or as you type in the tag existing ones appear.
  • Think about whether the tag can be applied to other boards and threads, these will be the best tags.
  • Tagging is easiest when you just copy the tags from the previous thread, then none are missed and no unnecessary ones are added.

Common Tags
These are some of the tags that can be used at all boards and what they should be used for.
  • animation (should be used for gifs, animations)
  • body (lips, mouth, arms, nose, ears)
  • couple (couples, love, romance)
  • family (used for sisters, brothers, siblings, parents)
  • fan art (fanart, graphics, fanmade)
  • fan fiction (fan fictions, fanfics, fan fics)
  • fashion (style, runway, sunglasses, clothes)
  • hate or love (hate it or love it, love it or hate it, love or hate) (this is for the game)
  • icon (icons, avatars, avis)
  • picture (images, photos, episode stills, set pics, pictures)
  • social networking (social media, twitter, tumblr, facebook, instagram)
  • tpam (the poster above me (you))
  • tpbm (the poster below me (you))

Keep in Mind
  • Posters need 100 posts to be able to add tags that are already created.
  • Only Managers and Moderators can create tags.
  • Posters can't tag closed threads.
  • Tags are checked regularly and removed if they are not being used or are not correct.
  • If you have any questions, or want help tagging your board then PM Jackie.

There are three places where tags appear on Fan Forum:
  1. The tag cloud, where the top tags from across the site are listed and the most used tags are highlighted: Fan Forum - Tags
  2. On thread pages, at the bottom of the page, there's a list of tags associated with the current thread, and an "Edit tags" option to add/modify tags.
  3. On forum pages, there's a tag icon (http://images.fanforum.com/misc/tag.png) for each thread which has been tagged, with a list of the tags associated with the thread.

Thread Tagging Tutorial

This is to help anyone that's confused on how to tag.

Tags can be typed in when you start a new thread in the box for tags. All you need is a comma to separate them.

Tags can be added to already open threads. Simply scroll to the bottom of the page until you see this box -

Click edit tags, type in your tags and then save.

As you add tags, it will look like this -

When you've added them it will look like this -

You can click that link and find all the other threads at Fan Forum that have that tag.

Moderators are more than welcome to copy and use this tutorial on their boards to help out their posters. You can also include a list of the tags used at your board as a guide. You can see some of these existing threads here.

Just in case anyone's noticed some to be organised/merged or if there are any questions.

UpInFlames 07-16-2012 08:54 PM

I've noticed that there's a misspelled tag for Chad - Chad Michael Murrray. Too many r's . Do we mention that here to have it removed? :)

your creation 07-17-2012 12:51 AM

You can do, and Haylie should see it and remove it:nod:

UpInFlames 07-17-2012 04:33 PM

Great, thank you :)

your creation 07-22-2012 01:18 AM

If you notice anymore feel free to post them too :)

UpInFlames 07-30-2012 07:10 PM

Will do! I'm glad I saw this thread because there's a lot more to tags than I thought
