But I guess they felt it brought ratings.... ~~and other real life circumstances in s2 and s3~~

The funny thing is that the ratings dropped a lot in S2, so it clearly didn't lol. Staying with what they originally planned (which I doubt was the Brucas and Jeyton storylines) probably would have been much better for the ratings.

^ Actually season 2 started very Naley centric.

Season 2 ratings improved compared to how season 1 started. I even remember Mark talking about how bad they started and how he was worried the series wouldn't ever make it in season 1.

I think in season 1, the episode when Lucas decide who he wants to be with in Brooke and Peyton, that was a series high for OTH at the time.

Because it was so highly promoted...

I think season 2 was the highest overall ratings for the show though....

^ The ratings started off high, but by the end of the season they were a lot lower. The highest rated episode was 2.03 with 5.4 million and the ratings for the season 2 finale was 3.6 million, so clearly the storylines didn't do an great job of retaining viewers. That's true, but they did pick up a bit across season 1.

I really can't even say if the romances affected the ratings much... it seemed Naley/Triangle/Brother Battle actually brought more ratings (early seasons) than when the romances (any of them) were set in place.
I think it probably would've went up and down regardless since it pretty much happens with all shows. lol

With OTH, no one can really say, Leyton, Brucas, or Naley dropped the ratings or made it high since it was pretty much up and down throughout the first 3 seasons....
Because each pairing can make a case. lol For me, OTH was one of those series where I always was captivated if it was a great trailer.

And people can't forget that OTH went through a LOT of changes. Switching nights, from Wednesday to Tuesday I think.
During Season 4, the merger of UPN and WB = CW.
Season 5, it returned in January I think.
Season 8, 2 main cast members leave the series... of course the ratings would be all over the place....

I think the triangle might have brought more ratings in S1, but after that I'm not sure. For me, that whole situation should have ended at that after the first season (which would have been better for Lucas, Brooke and Peyton as characters imo) and the show ratings wise kinda did suffer from it a little bit from it. It didn't exactly help that to me, Luke turning up at Brooke's door come off as last minute change and Peyton's feelings for Jake didn't really have any build up either. When it comes to the ratings of season 2, Leyton fans have more of an leg to stand on because it is the season that dropped the most ratings wise and Brucas/Jeyton did get a lot of focus that season.

^ I disagree since Jeyton were more together in season 2 when the ratings were the best (overall) for the series.

When Brucas were together, they had good ratings and bad ratings.
When Leyton were together, they had good ratings and bad ratings.
Jeyton were really never promoted as a pairing compared to the other 2 to really get any blame.

One of the best rated episodes of season 4 was 4x10, and I still remember the TRAILER, like it was yesterday, it was promoted as Lucas dying, and seeing how his life could've been. That intrigued me. Not who Lucas was going to be with.
Back than social media wasn't as big as it was now, so the main source of information was huge speculation, the trailers and probably spoilers from the spoiler board.

Season 1-2 were by far the strongest seasons in ratings and story telling... and it was because of the WHOLE show, not because of one character or one person.
I feel Naley were the biggest pairing during the first season actually. Season 2, it was a lot of pairings but the characters had some good arcs as well.
