Dante Scott
Scott, 14, is a Grade 9 student at Walkerville Collegiate in Windsor.
He will play a character named Vijay Maraj on Degrassi: Next Class, which debuts in January.

"As soon as I found out I could not stop screaming," Scott said.
"My parents were huge fans of the show. They were more excited than I was when I got the role."

Scott said he was keenly aware of the show before he auditioned.

"I knew Degrassi dealt with some very serious problems teens have.
It's basically one giant anti-bullying campaign.
I was really, really proud to be part of this show," Scott said.

Scott said he and his character have some similarities.

"We both have a lot of fun in school," Scott said.
"He's just always positive. Me as a person, as Dante, I always try and stay positive." *

Dante was a finalist on The Next Star (season 6). *

I definitely want to be added. I have a feeling I'm going to like Vijay.

JustMe2000 12-20-2015 07:28 PM

Thanks for starting the thread fellow Mod. You can add me as well.

Here's an audio interview with him from a Windsor radio station. He sounds like such a baby.

kaleidocat 12-21-2015 01:16 PM

I was surprised by how young he is. I guess I'm used to the cast being a couple years older than their character. I'm not complaining though.

Was Adamo a host of The Next Star? Or was that another show? I don't know much about it.

87daysofTV 12-22-2015 04:10 PM

He reminds me of Ricky from my so called life tbh.

JustMe2000 12-22-2015 10:06 PM

Hmm...I can see that. Now, let's all feel free to cry over the MSCL Christmas episode. :P

kaleidocat 12-23-2015 08:54 AM

That MSCL episode is on my watchlist before the holiday season is over. "Make it, make your way home. Better than the last."

And I agree about Ricky, right down to his positive vibe. I worry a bit about Vijay being over the top with his good outlook on life. I mean, it is healthy but everything in moderation. Hope Vijay has a well-rounded personality, full of great traits and flaws. Confusion is normal...I'd hope he doesn't have it all figured out yet because it wouldn't be Degrassi if he did.

Based on what little we know of the newbies so far he stands out the most to me so I'm looking forward to see what's to come with him.

I found this little bit from a new interview with Dante in Windsor Star to be amusing.

Quote:

“During my audition process, I watched a few of the very old, old episodes,” Scott says about the show. “Episodes that aired in 2001 … I went all the way back.”

Told that Degrassi dates back to the 1980s, and even earlier, Scott says his parents showed him some of those episodes, too. “It’s definitely completely different. TV has changed since all the way back then. We’re touching some very serious subject matters … Subject matter that’s a lot more serious than how they were in the 1980s.”

When it’s pointed out that the original Degrassi High broached many heavy issues — including suicide, racism, mental illness, homophobia, drug abuse, premarital sex, abortion, AIDS, and more — Scott seems a little mystified.

“I guess that’s true,” he says. “But we’re getting technology involved in it now. The dangers of cellphones and stuff like that.”

I think the interviews are interesting enough, but a lot of people seem to be acting condescending to him. Maybe it's because he's by far(?) the youngest actor to ever be on the show as a main character. Even Alex Steele, Angie from season 2, is six years older than him.

I guess this age disparity, along with hiring other young actors (I think they're all under 18 this season), implies the directors are trying to get high school actors back on the show, rather than 20-somethings or whatever was going on last season.

kaleidocat 01-03-2016 02:14 PM

The actress who played Arlene was very young as well. I think you are right about the casting Astroman129.

Thanks for dropping off the interview. Cool that this one has photos and they went with the school hallway. Different than Degrassi's - turn on some lights!

Scott, a student at Walkerville Centre for Creative Arts in his real life, plays Vijay Miraj — a character who shares Scott’s West Indian heritage.
Another interesting tidbit.

JustMe2000 02-17-2016 11:49 AM

The other night Dante took over the Degrassi account and answered some fan questions. Some of his replies.

And then he continued the fun over at his account.

And leave it to Sara to get right at the heart of it with a question that I have to admit I've thought about at least once or twice. :look:

kaleidocat 02-18-2016 08:56 PM

Hmmm I wonder if you have been able to link to replies like that for awhile now and I didn't know about it. That seems like something I would do.

The break up scene with Tristan is hilarious.

He made a dramatic exit right? I can't remember what he said. Man, I need to rewatch that scene....all the episodes.
