Degrassi Take 5? 6? 32? A DOCUMENTARY?! The New Degrassi Series Anticipation & Discussion Thread

In case any of you have been living under a rock, from Variety

Quote:
HBO Max has greenlit “Degrassi,” a new series adding to the teen drama franchise of the same name. Additionally, HBO Max secured the U.S. rights for all 14 seasons of “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” which will become available on the streamer in spring 2022.

Over 10 episodes, “Degrassi” will chart the painful high school experience of self-discovery by following a group of Toronto students and faculty coping with events that both bring them together and tear them apart.

“Degrassi” is set to debut in 2023 and will be produced by franchise owner WildBrain and developed by showrunners and executive producers Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen. The series will shoot in Toronto in summer 2022

So we're not done with Degrassi just yet, thankfully.

What are your thoughts on this new Degrassi series?

What are you looking forward to the most with this new series?

Any predictions for story lines/roles?

Any concerns?

Which former Degrassians do you think will show up?

Use this thread to discuss all things and news regarding the new Degrassi series.

I'm not sure if a cast member has been asked, like officially, in an interview what they thought about the reboot. (Oh, the panel with Shane, Melissa, Lauren, and Stefan might have)

Heeeerrrre's Cassie.

Quote:
Nylon: Now Degrassi is getting rebooted again, and this time on HBO, just like Euphoria. Have you heard anything about it?

Cassie: I haven't heard a ton about it. I saw it on Instagram. I mean, I'm always looking for Degrassi to be more risky, more like Euphoria, I guess. But Degrassi has its spot and it plays to that crowd. So I think Euphoria will be Euphoria, but in my mind I'm like, "I want the competition. Come on. Come on, Linda Schuyler, Degrassi, let's take them down. Let's show them some *******.

I’m personally very curious what a Degrassi on HBO Max in 2022 looks like.

For sure. I'm wondering the same as well. I mean, I feel that I'm so out of touch with the youth and I see all these TikTok and they have all this lingo. What's it called? Not the Millennials, the Gen Z?

Yeah, Gen Z.

The Gen Z. And I just don't get it, and I wonder how much it will play into the new series. These kids nowadays are just so much more advanced with just being connected and their phones. I remember constantly losing a flip phone. No one was ever like, "Grab your phone.” So it should be interesting.

If they approach you about coming back as Manny in her thirties, would you be interested in that, or is it put to bed for you?

I will always think about anything if there's a lot of money to be made, I can be bought. So there's a price, but I just don't know. I feel like, what... was she going to come back as a drama teacher?

Maybe! We know she didn’t make it in Hollywood...

Maybe. She had to come back, be a drunk drama teacher. I feel like it would be more fun to make a series about the actual lives of the real cast.

I've never watched Euphoria but somehow know about it, am somewhat invested, all by what I've seen on social media. And I can't hate Cassie because of this Cassie and Skins Cassie. Cassie's are cool. (...did...did they take names to make us associate them with other tv/film?)

Anyway, Cassie is funny. Cassie right. We gotta let the new kids shine.

Here's a side that all actors auditioning are given. I had to edit this. How exciting that our kids will be able to curse in the school halls!

Updates from a couple friends of the board. It looks like the new series won't start filming on July 1st, which was apparently the rumor, and whenever it does it doesn't appear Stefan is involved. Or maybe he's just waiting like the rest of us?

From one of the best sources of Degrassi information out there. Someone asked if they knew what it said and they said they do not.

With all the rumors swirling around HBO Max and with apparently no filming done so far this summer, I'm having doubts about this moving forward. I hope I'm wrong.

Gosh, I was really hoping someone in here had good news. I’m so convinced it isn’t happening anymore and I’m heartbroken.

There is news, and it's not good, but probably expected at this point. From Wildbrain's Q4 and year-ending financial reports summary.

Quote:
In January 2022, we licensed the Degrassi library to HBO Max, which they have been streaming since March, and entered into a contract to produce a new series of Degrassi. Our production of the new series has been paused. We are currently engaged in constructive discussions with HBO Max.
So yeah, it looks like the reboot is a casualty of all this Warner Brothers Discovery mess regarding HBO Max. I think Wildbrain wants to produce more Degrassi, but they may have to shop it to another outlet like Hulu or Paramount Plus for that to happen which is probably the focus of that "constructive discussion." Either way, very frustrating.

I need to become a streaming/network executive so I can bring Degrassi back myself!!! What is Drake doing?! He could singlehandedly bring it back with all that money and he’s producing TV anyways!!

As long as Wildbrain is still trying though, I’m going to keep up hope.

And it's officially dead at HBO Max. WildBrain is still shopping it apparently. Your move Hulu & Paramount +. From Variety, and also Stohn checks in to give some hope, even if he and Linda aren't involved in any current discussions.

Quote:
The new “Degrassi” series that had been ordered at HBO Max is no longer moving forward, Variety has confirmed.

The new entry in the Canadian high school drama franchise was originally picked up for 10 episodes at the streamer back in January. It was to be produced by franchise owner WildBrain and developed by showrunners and executive producers Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen.

The series would have been the sixth TV show in the franchise to date. The others are “The Kids of Degrassi Street,” “Degrassi Junior High” “Degrassi High,” “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” and “Degrassi: Next Class.”

This marks the latest project to get scrapped at HBO Max since the closing of the Warner Bros.- Discovery merger in April. Most famously, the HBO Max film “Batgirl” was shut down despite the fact it was in post-production. Likewise, the TBS comedy series “Chad” from Nasim Pedrad was canceled just before the second season was due to air. HBO Max has also removed a number of its original shows and movies from the platform, reportedly as a means to avoid royalty payments to creators.

stephenstohn- Linda and I are as eager as all Degrassi fans to see and enjoy and engage in a new Degrassi series, on whatever service that may be! We are not involved with the current discussions between WildBrain and Warner Bros. Discovery. We remain hopeful that production of a new series will proceed soon. “Whatever it takes!”

My co-mod mentioned this to me yesterday and I have to echo it along with Erin of our long running Degrassi site:

I'm trying to find some reactions.

Was anyone cast? How far along was production? I wonder.

I knew there was a reason I never followed up with Jerry on moving the board back to present.

We could use this thread to talk aboot the documentary! Is 3 hours enough? Will my favourite characters and storylines be talked about enough in depth? Which castmembers will be brought back to be interviewed?
