Episode 806 Discussion-- With or Without You--November 14, 2008

Sav and Anya plan to celebrate their six-month anniversary on the school’s overnight trip. Only problem? Alli, Sav’s sister, convinces their parents to let her go on the trip on the condition that Sav spend every second with her. Forced to choose between his girlfriend and family responsibility, what’s a guy to do? Compromise. Trouble is, can Sav trust his sister to behave? All signs point to no when Alli is anointed with the nickname “Backwoods” Bhandari. Sav is furious. How could she do that to their family? Alli is furious back. How could he believe those rumors? And more importantly, how can Sav make out with Anya and be upset if Alli does the same? Alli accuses Sav of having some serious double standards. And Anya knows it too!

Over at Smithdale, both Manny and Emma are crushing on their roommate, Kelly. The two girls know they can’t compete over the same guy. They’ve been down that road before. They are older and wiser now. They know their friendship is too valuable to risk over a guy. Isn’t it? (CTV Media)

I'll say more later, but for now, I'll just say that even though I loved a lot of the Emma/Manny scenes, I think they should have moved that plot to another episode and had this one focus entirely on the characters on the camping trip.

Haha Bickering Love, me too!

Manny looks GREAT this season but I agree. I think this ep should have focused on the camping trip. I thought it was ok. Not as exciting as I thought it was going to be.

Hmm. Johnnie isn't such the bad boy he pretends to be is he? I'm kinda warming to Alli/Johnnie

I agree JustMe. That's what I wanted also.
The subplot should've took place on the camping trip as well.

Why weren't Peter, Bruce, Riley, Jane, Derek or Holly J on the trip?
Plenty of characters that could've been there and could've been part of a B plot.
Or a whole mix of C plots, like the way Connor had, KC didn't even get a single line this episode.

but yeah, I did enjoy seeing Emma and Manny.
I liked the scene where they were discussing Craig, Damian, and Jay.

Alli is awesome. :]

& I liked Johnny in this. Even tho he was being an ass. He was cool.

Hey! this is Erin BTW if you didn't know that.

I really liked the episode. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I like it!! It's a good episode to analyse.

Sav was really interesting in this episode. I totally agree with Anya and Alli. What he was saying was not cool. But at the same time, you have to remember that he was raised to believe these things. It must be really hard for him to balance the life of a regular high school student with his strict family values. I really like Sav still. I'm sure he will come around.
Like the thing is, as Ray pointed out in the podcast, I don't think that anybody blames Sav for the way he reacted towards Alli. I mean, she is his little sister. It makes sense. This episode moreso represents a greater problem of gender inequality in society. Teenage girls have always been a source of moral debate since the beginning of time. It's really hard, because we get so many different messages from different people. We have to be sexy-flirty to get boys to like us, but at the same time we also have to be good, pure, and "innocent." Boys don't have to be innocent because everyone just expects that they wont be even if they tried. However, we can't be all of these things at once. It's really complicated. Sav expects Anya to be his girlfriend and Alli to be his little sister. They are each supposed to fit these "roles."

As for the subplot, really what can I say about it? It was pointless. I'll admit it was kind of funny at some parts, but in retrospect I didn't really like it. It was definitely better than 804, that's for sure. But why are these kids even on the show still? It's so annoying.

I really liked the episode and I have to say this season is really good and I'm enjoying the new characters a lot more than I thought I would.

I like Alli a lot. And I understand Sav's double standard. In his community Alli would be looked down upon for being in a tent with a boy while Anya doesn't necessarily face the same consequences. Plus, he's her older brother and it's hard for him to think off her being in that situation. But I love that Anya stood up to him and made him see how he was wrong.

I agree that the episode could have focused on just the camping trip but I really enjoyed the Emma/Manny subplot. I love seeing them be friends and I liked the whole "who dated whom" conversation. And the Mirror exercise with Manny and her acting partner. As an actor and acting teacher, yes, that is reall and I use it a lot.

Liberty's 8X04 plot was a miles better than the pointless and boring Emma/Manny lame fight about Kelley. Not only it was poorly written and lame but it was really a waste of time and space. It didn't help that Manny/Emma were potrayed as almost psychos when they confronted Kelley about his frequentations either.

Franckly I can't see how someone can prefer Emma/Manny's plot over Libert's plot if you're not biased against Liberty. Liberty hatred and haters never cease to amaze me or should I've said not surprise me. Liberty haters will never admit that she got a good and interesting storyline when it's the case !

I mean even Boycott The Caf actually enjoy/like Liberty's plot and that's saying a lot coming from them considering their past/history of haterism against Liberty.

I loved the Liberty subplot with the sorority. It was well-done. I didn't know people didn't like it.

This episode felt like Degrassi (well the a-plot did). It wasn't anything shocking but it was still entertaining and it had that high school feel of kids testing their boundaries on a school trip. It reminded me of my high school field trips and of first boyfriends. The pace was great and the minor niners shined like they usually do. I adored the Alli and Johnny scene. They both are kids that people have preconceived ideas about. They both are aware of them and I think give in to the stereotype some by acting tough or dressing sexy, but they are still their own person and that really shined through in their scene together. I hope we see more of them together and hopefully through Alli, we get to know Johnny. I find it really interesting how he was isolated and reading the whole time. Who is Johnny outside of Bruce the Moose and Lucas?

Awww Erin, I always like to read your thoughts on Degrassi. You bring in a fresh perspective. I'm glad you are posting here now.

B-plot...I agree with everyone else who said it should have been left out (or hey, they could have spread out Liberty's insanely packed racism/sorority/binge drinking/fitting in plot).

I never thought about those points, they are all very good. I guess that's why I didn't have a problem with Sav in this episode, because of his very strict family values. Yet, I do hope he lightens up after loosing Anya and we see more of them, especially Alli.

I really liked this ep.

I agree with kaleidocat, it DID feel like Degrassi. I really enjoyed the a-plot and I didn't think I would considering I never found Anya or Sav all that interesting. I thought when Anya got mad and first broke up with Sav over the family dinner--that was a bit over the top. I understood wby she broke up with him at the end of the episode though. I liked that they played out their cultural differences without cramming it down everyones' throats. Their relationship didn't get much development, but I still thought they were cute together. They're both kind of cheesy and dorky-- in a good way though.

I was happy to see more Alli this episode. She's shaping up to be one of my favourite characters on the show. (I know I say this a lot but the niners are proving to be a great addition to the cast). I thought her scenes with Anya were cute, her scenes with Sav were realistic (I like that the writers used the pair as siblings) and her scenes with Johnny warmed me up to his character a bit. I'm still not a Johnny fan, but their scenes together just worked. I liked them a lot.

The b-plot... I think the less said, the better. I adore Manny and Emma but the two were a bunch of banshees this episode. o_O

I actually didn't like this episode as much as the others this season. It wasn't that bad, but I actually did think it was a little boring and I liked the B plot better.

I still think Sav is so boring. Anya is getting a little better, and they were definitely cute together, but I guess I really don't care that they broke them up. Both characters seem so much younger then they really are supossed to be. I liked the talks with Anya and Alli. And I also thought that Alli and Johnny were kinda interesting.

The B plot reminds me of how much I love the Manny/Emma friendship, and of how much I love Manny. I thought they were funny in the episode, although I wouldn't care for either of them to be with Kelly.

Whoa whoa whoa. I am not a Liberty hater. In fact, in past seasons, she was my favourite character on the show. Her character is pretty much what got me through high school. If any of the uni characters had to get a main plot, I'm glad it was her.

I disliked 804 for a number of reasons. The supporting characters (that sorority leader girl, and the other girls liberty was conpeting against) all seemed so stereotyped and cartoon-y. I go to a big uni in Canada and we don't even have sororities - that's more of an American thing. And, to me at least, the whole storyline just seemed so dumb. At least this subplot made me laugh a little. However, in general I don't like any of the university storylines. Other than 717, there isn't a single university storyline that I thought was good, including season 6. Just my opinion.
