The Lexicon of Love (2) is the twelfth episode of Season 5 of Degrassi: The Next Generation.
It aired on December 5, 2005 in Canada and on April 7, 2006 in the United States.

Main Plot
Paige wakes Alex up in her bed - Paige spent the night on the floor - and as the two girls awkwardly prepare for school, they try to avoid what happened last night as in, the fact that they kissed.
What happened? That kiss: does it make them lesbians? Bisexuals? Alex shrugs it off.
Paige also is thinking about the scene with Alex's mom's boyfriend the night before. She doesn't know what they are or what that kiss meant. All she knows is that she's not freaked. Paige is.
Paige is not supposed to be into women but Kevin reminds her—neither is Alex. He convinces Paige to be true to herself and to her feelings.
Are they lesbians? Are they bisexual? Who cares? They're together. degrassiwiki

Sub Plot
Emma is furious at Snake's scene with Daphe at the movie premiere the night before. So she feels compelled to spill the beans about Snake and Ms. Hatzilakos.
Spike loses it. Not over one little kiss, but because Snake asked Emma to keep a secret and that is unforgivable. She kicks Snake out, disgusted that he would use Emma like that. degrassiwiki
Watch: IMDBtv, PlutoTV, TubiTV.

This storyline highlights a significant change in teen attitudes toward same-sex attraction. First, many teens these days are not concerned about identifying as a lesbian or as gay, choosing instead to view sexuality as a more fluid experience. While older lesbians and gay men (meaning, anyone older than their mid-20s) may feel it is politically necessary to identify as gay or lesbian, younger teens these days dont feel that pressure to choose an identifier.

Though we dont yet know whether the Alex-and-Paige storyline will be extended throughout the season, the fact that it exists is another positive step in raising awareness about queer teens.

In addition, Alexs Latina heritage makes her character only the second teen Latina lesbian on North American television, following Buffy the Vampire Slayers Kennedy (Iyari Limon).

Also noteworthy is the fact that this storyline will be aired in the U.S. on basic cable network The N, also home to the new series South of Nowhere. This unprecedented eventtwo teen series, on the same network, including girls who are just coming outsuggests that homosexuality has made significant strides in mainstream acceptance, both for the teens who will be watching the shows and for the adults who produce them.

In the latest Degrassi instalment featuring Jay and Silent Bob, Smith finds himself dispensing relationship advice concerning an awkward lesbian kiss between regular characters Paige and Alex.

It’s another example of how Degrassi: The Next Generation has not shied away from controversial subjects, part of its huge appeal on N (formerly Noggin), the MTV specialty channel where the show has been heavily promoted and is a huge hit.

They’ve gotten away with storylines no U.S. broadcaster series would dare tackle, said Schuyler, although one on abortion did get cut.

While the kids draw crowds when they appear at Canadian shopping malls, Schuyler says one recent visit to New Jersey drew 4,000 screaming Degrassi devotees.

“They’re wearing, like, Canadian flags and they have their face painted with Degrassi written on them,” she said.

“They come out like real, rabid fans.”

She thinks the appeal lies in the fact that the show is far removed from, say, a California fantasy series like The O.C., that teens can identify with Degrassi.

“It’s ‘Oh my god, that’s my life’ or ‘I recognize that person, it’s me or my friend.’ It just strikes them in a more visceral way.”
