Season 6 Discussion- Hey! Adams was the man!

Let's see....in this season.......

Sean returned....and then left again.
Peter found religion. Or at least a religious girl.
Mia was sure the energetic mom.
And Manny liked that just fine. Besides, she got to beat someone up.
The D & D boys were picked on by Perino. And they grew their 'fros
Toby and Liberty were sitting in a tree.........
Over in the next tree was Craig and cocaine.
Ashley showed up in her underwear. Still wasn't enough for Jimmy.
Maybe he needed to see those pictures of Darcy.
Emma was a sexual being.
Snake, like the rest of us, was horrified.
Ellie reported, on who and what we hardly knew.
Jay thought it was super that Marco was gay.
Paige had fun with Spin and Jesse. Not at the same time. Sort of.
Alex stripped. Next stop, The Bada Bing.
We met Clare for the first time.
And JT, well, you know.....

So.....what were some of your favorite episodes and story lines?

What were some of your most disappointing things about this season?

Did you like the change of having one season just take up one semester?

Any other things that stand out about the season? Here's your shot to lay it on the line and have your say.....

And for some help remembering, the episodes.....

601/02- Here Comes Your Man
The new school year has started and Sean Cameron is back in town to finish 12th grade with his old classmates. Peter is given a new car for his birthday and he starts to compete in street races with Sean, who starts to re-connect with Emma. Emma finds herself torn between Sean and Peter, and a jealous Peter plants drugs in Sean's locker, leading to his expulsion from Degrassi. In an effort to get revenge, Sean street races Peter one last time- only to accidentally hit a jogger during the race. Marco is overwhelmed with moving in with Dylan and throwing Paige a going away party, and later Ellie finds herself having to deal with a dorm roommate from hell.

603- True Colours
Jay persuades Emma to help Sean with his legal troubles. Later, Emma finds out that Peter planted the drugs in Sean's locker, leading her to end their relationship. Also, Ellie receives mixed messages from Jesse, her cute editor at the school newspaper.

604- Can't Hardly Wait
Jimmy's new goals include being a successful coach for the girls junior basketball team, and pursuing an intimate relationship with Ashley. Meanwhile, cheerleading captain Darcy clashes with choreographer Manny over whether to let new girl and teen mother Mia Jones join the squad.

605/06- Eyes Without a Face
Darcy uses the Internet---and some suggestive pictures---to raise money for new Spirit Squad uniforms; Later, her relationship with Spinner begins to suffer and eventually ends as a result of her preoccupation with her Internet fans, one of whom decides to meet Darcy in person. J.T. forms a bond with Mia and her 2-year-old daughter, Isabella, but a jealous Liberty isn't ready for this new relationship. Also, Ellie's secret romance with her editor gets more serious.

607- Working for the Weekend
The results for Spinner's career aptitude test upset him when it suggests he should become a clown, police officer, or lumberjack. When Jimmy decides to design and sell T-shirts, he and Spinner decide to go into business together and open a store. After making a success of their business, Jimmy and Spinner's store is burglarized, and they lose their profits. Meanwhile, Alex returns to school to increase her grades to become a physical therapist, but her bullying past comes back to haunt her.

608- Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Sean finally gets out of jail and has two years of probation. He and Emma are reunited. When Sean gets out, he tells Emma that she was the perfect girlfriend. Emma has something to reveal that makes her not so perfect...what she did with Jay in the ravine. Derek and Danny have problems when a teacher begins bullying them, and report him to Mr. Simpson.

609/10- What's It Feel Like to Be a Ghost?
Craig returns to Toronto to play a music festival. Manny finds out that he's been using drugs, and later after having trouble keeping up with the conversation at a dinner party, she and Craig leave the table and take some cocaine together. Ellie finds Craig's stash, but he lies and tells her that it's Manny's. Manny breaks up with Craig over his drug use and later tells Ellie, who finally sees how much of a problem he has when his nose starts to bleed during a concert performance. JT and Mia couldn’t be happier as Degrassi’s newest cute couple – and everyone’s happy for them – except, of course, for Liberty. She decides Mia’s got to know the truth about JT’s past. Later, the Degrassi/Lakehurst school rivalry is heating up, and the Lakehurst gang are out to get J.T. for dating Mia, who has a child with one of them

611- Rock This Town
Manny throws a party at the Simpson-Nelsons' house while Spike and Snake are out of town. During the party, J.T. finally decides he really wants to be with Liberty, rather than Mia, his current girlfriend, and goes to find Liberty to tell her his feelings. Outside, he finds the Lakehurst gang urinating on his car and confronts them, which results in him being fatally stabbed.

612- The Bitterest Pill
In the aftermath of J.T.'s murder, all of Degrassi is in mourning. Liberty and Toby plan a memorial that reflects J.T.'s enthusiasm for life. Liberty is so shocked by J.T's death that she won't cry which makes Mia think that Liberty has no feelings at all. Toby also has to consider letting Liberty know J.T.'s true feelings for her, which is complicated by them growing closer, eventually leading to a kiss. During the school memorial, they decide they would play the video that Mia found inside J.T's locker rather than the slideshow. This results into Liberty finally crying. Ellie tells Jesse about her kiss with Craig.

613- If You Leave
Manny decides to move back in with her parents, but Emma isn't ready to let her go. Later, a riot breaks out between Lakehurst and Degrassi after Degrassi students protest Lakehurst's participation in the Spirit Squad Regionals. Marco worries Dylan is cheating on him again, but when he follows Dylan to confront him, Dylan reveals he is moving to Switzerland to play hockey.

614/15- Free Fallin'
Stressed at Banting University, Paige has a panic attack during an exam. Her professor gives her another chance to catch up on her work, but she has a huge family dinner to prepare. The stress put on Paige causes her to set fire to her dorm room by accident. Paige eventually drops out of school and returns home determined to keep the real reason she's home a secret. Peter’s determined to show Darcy he can be a good guy – even though the lies he tells keep catching up with him. He’s got to find a way to get through to her...

616- Love My Way
Alex is upset when Paige begins having casual relations with both Ellie's ex-boyfriend Jesse, and Spinner. Soon after, Alex reveals to Paige that she still loves her. Snake catches Emma and Sean buying condoms and birth control, and surprises everyone- including himself, with his anger.

617- Sunglasses at Night
Marco, having a hard time dealing with Dylan's departure, decides to go on a spring break trip with Spinner. He needs money to pay for the trip, though, and discovers he has skills at online poker. However, he becomes addicted and incurs huge debts, leading him to steal from his father. Peter and Darcy are having a delicious time keeping their relationship super secret. The more they fight in front of people, the cuter – and hotter – things get behind closed doors. But when they get caught sneaking around – will they be able to be up front about what’s got to happen next?

618/619- Don't You Want Me?
With she and her mother facing eviction, Alex takes a job as a waitress at the strip club that Jay's girlfriend, Mel works at. She discovers there's more to be made on stage and starts stripping. Paige is distraught when she finds out Alex is stripping, and fails to understand why she continues to do it. After Alex finds out that her mother used the money she made stripping to bail out her boyfriend instead of using it to pay the rent, she quits stripping and makes up with and moves in with Paige. Emma and Sean have an argument when he tells her that he plans to enroll in the army. Later, Emma fears she might be pregnant. It turns out be a false alarm. She and Sean make up, but he still leaves for the army. Ellie and Jesse re-connect, and the next morning Marco discovers them together in bed.

Adams was so adorable! I mean really they could not have cast a more cuddly looking actor for that part.

Speaking of that episode, it really makes me wish we had seen more of the Edwards sisters together.

Favorite episodes: The a-plot of Don’t You Want Me? I love troubled families and this was a fresh look at a new situation where the parents behaved badly. I know of a couple situations where the mom takes her man’s side and follow up to this could have been a goldmine but sadly it wasn’t in the cards. But I still love the glimpse we got of Alex’s homelife in this episode and was emotionally invested in her decisions through out. I wasn’t really devoted to Palex so it doesn’t factor in on my love of this plot…but any indifference doesn’t either for the most part; however I think I could easily be swayed into anti-Paige/relationship territory. Oh but this episode had MEL! I loved her so much. Almost as much as Devon. ALMOST.
Eyes Without a Face. I’d need to rewatch it to follow up with something that’s actually worth reading but I enjoyed it. I still like that Wikipedia described “loveable pedophile” Adams. Hmmm…maybe I could enjoy season 6 more if I take episodes less seriously.

Free Fallin’ – Wasn’t that bad, I guess. I’ve heard people say they can relate to the episode so I’m probably giving it more credit than it’s worth. I had to take a semester off from college due to an anxiety disorder…but this episode didn’t speak to me at all about it (different situations). I guess TPTB had a good intention or something though and Paige’s dramatics were entertaining although completely unrealistic (yeah, let’s just burn down the dorm). But I liked the exploding turkey. And Aislinn’s dad playing Paige’s dad. I was always wondering about him. HE DOES EXIST! PAIGE AND DYLAN HAVE A DAD! Dads go lost on this show.

B-plot of Crazy Little Thing Called Love: I still feel affected by this. I can remember shots of Derek’s expression as he wondered what to do about the situation with Mr. P. I still judge Mr. P. But he’s very human and reminds me of some of the high school teachers I had. My inner teen self and my older Degrassi viewer self doesn’t know if this plot is what is normal and excusable or not because there was no follow up.

Least favorites: B-plot to Don’t You Want Me is at the forefront of my mind. I never got on the anti-Emma bandwagon until this episode. I can’t even think about how she snickered at Sean’s desire to enter the army to better his situation without becoming enraged. I think this is actually the one time I uttered a curse word at the TV. Her pregnancy situation doesn’t make sense. I still can’t figure out if she wanted to be pregnant or was just worried about her future because she thought she was…and she sure as heck held onto that thought. I didn’t understand her at all.

Here Comes Your Man – I wasn’t really a Sellie fan until the Semma of season 6. Always was a fence sitter if not more pro Semma …there’s history of me in the anti-Sellie thread somewhere. Season 6 changed a lot of opinions and enjoyment I had of earlier seasons featuring them. This episode sort of woke me up so I thank TPTB for that. Also: Seanborg was born this season.

True Colors/Crazy Little Thing Called Love A-plot – I’ve always heard the Emma “haters” say that everything is all about Emma. I didn’t start to understand until this season. I hate it when I’m force fed by writers, production, etc to feel for certain characters because they decide they are a favorite.

What’s It Feel Like to Be a Ghost? – I get on my soapbox too often about this episode. I’ll spare you. I wish the episode was about what’s it feel like to be Craig the bipolar drug addict instead of what’s it feel like to be Ellie and Manny and involved in a love triangle.

Can’t Hardly Wait – Don’t much care for Jimmy’s willy woes. Also don’t like that Melissa McIntyre had to appear barely dressed when in previous interviews she said she never wanted to do a nude scene. Her appearing in her underwear seemed degrading, especially since she never landed an episode of her own. She wasn’t valued at all.

Episodes I never watched:
Working For the Weekend
The Bitterest Pill
If You Leave
Love My Way

Episodes I nearly never watched aka watched much later:
Sunglasses at Night
Rock This Town

Season 6 made it nearly impossible to be a fan of this show unless you liked the couples featured. I still remember how Stohn came out on Degrassi.tv and admitted that they made a mistake by making this season too focused on relationships. Remember your faults TPTB. Remember this season. Learn from it.

My favorite episodes were Don't You Want Me and Free Falling. College stress and financial woes were better than the Semma relationship drama.

Semma was a big disappointment. I used to ship them together during season 1 and 2, but then Sellie happened and I changed sides. This season was a nail in the coffin for Semma.

And I hate the 'one semester a season' timeline. Especially since they can't even keep that consistent for season 11. While it let the show hold on to characters for longer, that's not always a good thing. It also is annoying for character/actor age match ups.

Nicole, there are episodes you've never seen!?!? Whaaaaa???

I think my favorite, only in retrospect, is Eyes without a Face. (Early hints of season 7 damaged Darcy whom I loved so much.)

My least favorite episode was What's It Feel Like to be a Ghost... and I never cared for the premiere, either. That stupid street racing plot. What was that. WIFLTBAG I never liked because it seemed so contrived to bring Craig back for one episode that was essentially an after school special.

I think season 5 was the worst season and season 6 was only marginally better... it was saved, weirdly enough, by JT's death. I think that was enough to shake things up and give us reason to tune in to season 7.

I tend to think Season 5 is a little worse than Season 6, but there's no doubt in my mind that those are the two weakest seasons.

Way back when I found the sides for Eyes Without a Face and posted about them (which probably led to them never putting the sides on public sites again, ), so I always had soft for that episode no matter what. I do think the main plot is quite good, and there's some terrific moments with Darcy and Clare- it's a shame we never got to see them as cast members on the show together. I don't know if it's my favorite episode of the season, but it's on the short list.

Another one I like a lot is (the not so popular) The Bitterest Pill. I think it did a good of showing the mourning of Toby, Mia and Liberty. I do think they should have dropped the subplot and just had it focus entirely on those three and how they were handling JT's death. Nicole, I do think you should try to watch this episode, and I think Working for the Weekend has its moments too. I particularly liked that the subplot showed Alex finally getting some consequences for her past actions.

I think thru the first part of Free Fallin' thing were okay for the season. I think the Darcy storyline was a good one, the rivalry had its moments and while I don't think the execution was that great, I actually quite like the angle that they took with Ghost, having one part play out from Manny's pov and the other from Ellie's pov. I think things really fall apart after the first part of Free Fallin', so much so that I think it might be the worst stretch of episodes in the show's history.

I like Free Fallin' and part of that is probably because it's the only college plot that they actually pulled off. It was a pretty realistic take on what happens to many first year students. I liked how they tied in panic attacks, and it was probably the last episode to actually make use of what Lauren can do as an actress. Not to mention in a season saturated with relationships it was nice to see a couple whose relationship was actually relevant enough to improve a plot. Maybe I'm biased because I love Palex, but I liked the way they showed how you can still care about someone even when you're not together anymore. If Degrassi has used Paige dropping out as their own out for not doing more college plots it would have saved us all a lot of pain in season 7.

I like Free Fallin if not just for the topic. Degrassi doesn't spend a lot of time talking about stress, but it's really a big part of real life high school and college

Agreed, except season 6 was just very meh to me.

So yeah. This season. Meh. I don't dislike it as much as some people though. Emma and Sean did dominate everyone, but I always said they're worth the time and I didn't think the plots were at all bad, though I was rolling my eyes at the gracious-as-hell hit-and-run victim.

What It Feels Like To Be A Ghost gets a good grade in my book, it's basically a huge karmic bitchslap for Craig after all the stuff he's done to Manny and Ellie. I mean I want him to get help all for the drugs, but the other stuff, he reaped what he sowed. And that EPIC dinner table discussion brought so much drama...

JT dying, meh. Don't really miss.

Palex is the highlight of this season and Don't You Want Me is probably the only Degrassi episode to make me cry. Especially at end of part two when Alex finally realizes she needs to let Paige in. And the perfect end song to that as well...

And then they blew it with Love Is a Battlefield. =/

I think there were a lot of things that made Season 6 inferior to other seasons. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I believe the death of JT, bringing Sean back, and the college storylines sort of lessened the shows quality somehow. Sean used to be an awesome character, and then he was wasted when he was brought back, all his storylines revolved around Emma. And I feel the college storylines were just kind of a waste as well and led to an unsatisfying ending for some of the seniors of Season 5. I'm actually writing a Season 6 fan fic where I incorporate some newer characters (Holly J, Jane), and keep the storylines in high school. I'd really like to get some feedback on it... I try a lot of experimentation with couples and storylines, and I'd really love to hear what some fans think!

I think this season is my guilty pleasure season. I really hate a lot of the plots for Emma's class, especially in the beginning, but I thought Paige's and her classmates plots were done well for the most part. We never saw the show deal with panic attacks before, which I think they did a really good job on. Personally, I like Palex, so their prominence didn't really bother me that much, but I could see why others would get annoyed. I think Alex's stripping plot would work better if they had a B plot earlier in the season. Love My Way, which others really hate, is another favorite, because I understand why Paige would think she needs to focus on something "fun" and shallow like her love life instead of getting back to school or work. It's like an episode on procrastination, if you think about it. And I like how Alex called Paige out at the end, which other episodes focusing on relationships never have. I'd like it more if they stretched it out over a few episodes, because this was the only time we'd see a Friends With Benefits/casual relationships on the show. I also liked Darcy's plots, even if I never cared for Peter at all.

I don't really think they did that good of a plot for JT, and I don't know if the writers planned on killing him before they did the Lakehurst rivalry or after and if they wanted to have the fire for next season too. I don't think it was that bad but it definitely wasn't the best work the show has done and I think they screwed up by giving Mia such a huge story line when she just debuted. They also could've give Liberty and Toby more plots instead of making them share one episode to mourn JT and focusing on the college kids for the rest of the season.

I think this season probably had the best seamless episodes for marathon viewing, like how the Craig cocaine episodes lead into RTT and TBP and If You Leave, then with all the Palex episodes towards the end. Maybe I'm just thinking that because I watched the episodes all back to back for my first time. I think this season gives me the most stuff to talk about, which I like in shows. I mean, most of it is pointing out what went wrong or what if situations, but still. Just forgetting about Emma and Sean makes this season 50% better.

My least favorite episode in this season is True Colors. Mainly because I pretty much like every episode in this season but this episode was the least needed.

I have a soft spot for Sunglasses At Night, but Rock This Town was a pretty powerful episode along with The Bitterest Pill. So it's hard to pick a favorite.

There were a lot of things good about this season, but a lot of things flopped. Sean's return was a flop, which sucks, because his return in the mini was so great. Darcy was good, she's always been good, but Peter was even more of a reprehensible scumbag.

I can't remember a good thing the upper classmen did besides the season finale. The season finale stuck out to me so much because it was a weird, harsh dash of reality and excellent storytelling with amazingly good motivation inside of an awkward children's drama show. The way they portrayed Alex in this episode was so annoying because she was never this amazing before, and was never that amazing again.

Outside of Alex though, the graduates in this season were just awful. Marco was bad, Paige couldn't be less interesting, even Ellie was bad. Emma was good, especially with Sean, I don't remember a lot of notable Manny stuff, but Manny excelled as a voice of reason. Season 6 was solid, a lot of low points, but solid nontheless.

Season 7 was the Manny season. There wasn't much with her this year.
