The Character Confessions #1: Everyone has at least one redeeming quality.

Inspired by the Degrassi Shipper Confessions thread. This is a thread where you can feel safe to say what you don't like about your favorite character if you do not feel comfortable admitting this in an appreciation thread but do not want to post in an anti thread either. This is also a place where you can admit what you do like about a character you normally dislike. Here is where you come to confess!

Let's try not to start any debates in here, however. You can either agree with someone's post or simply move on and state another opinion. Let's keep the peace!

yay! Nice idea!

I make a lot of graphics and sometimes I'll take a screencap of Jenna because the cap is really nice- the lighting or the angle she's looking at the camera- and I really want to do something with it but... I hate her O___O

I really like Anya as a character but I feel like there are times she's been made to look overly sympathetic when she was doing something wrong and it never gets pointed out like:
- Telling Sav she was on the pill when she wasn't (I won't get into that episode)
- Lying about the pregnancy (this wasn't that bad but still)
- Telling HJ that Fiona was in love with her. This actually really bugged me and I think it's preventing me from liking their trio.

Manny really irritates me. I know everyone makes mistakes, but hers were ones I didn't find realistic most of the time. However, in the end I think she grew as a person and I appreciated that.

I don't dislike Wesley, but to me he's just another Toby and I don't think there's more to him than that.

I'm not particularly fond of JT.

I tend to dislike the more class clown type characters in shows, and his rendition didn't really endear him with me. Not to mention contrast with most of the other prominent characters, he was pretty flat. I think even Liberty at that point had more depth.

So when he died, it was no big deal. The actor was leaving and there was nowhere to really take him after that abortion of a storyline with Liberty's pregnancy.

I think Ashley needed a new hair stylist after some point in season 4. And she irritated me in Venus without even being there. But she's my favorite G1 character.

Paige acted like a complete loser for most of S7. She dumped Alex for being too lazy RIGHT AFTER she defended her for her poor resume, then she took a day off because her job was too demanding or something.

Holly J. became a popular character as season 10 started, but I'll never like her on her own. She has to be part of a relationship or a friendship for me to like her.

Holly J is my absolute favourite to watch, always has been. I think it's always interesting to watch a s*@t starter. Haha. But, it wasn't just her snarky one-liners that got me. I mean, it helps that Charlotte Arnold is a fantastic actor, probably one of the better ones on the show. But, I think it's the rare moments, when you see her insecure and completely vindictive in her approach to anything and anyone, that you are drawn to her character. I mean, her big secret she told to Sav about hating being under her sister's shadow shows that she's not mean or bitchy for no reason. It kind of makes the character more than a static role, and it almost tricks viewers by her justifications for being the way she is.

In truth, I would never be friends with a person like her. Though, it's hard to not be interested in someone who shifts the status quo or stirs up excitement. Like, Dr. House or Peirce from Community, Holly J is just fun to watch.

I wish they would show more of her snark and sass; they watered this down A LOT. I want her to compete against someone again like she did with Mia, Fiona, and even Sav in the beginning of season 10. I don't want a full out mean girl again, but I do want to see her say a couple new one-liners.

It's rare to run into someone who isn't a JT fan. I was never a fan of him either. I enjoyed his goofy b-plots with Toby and have and appreciation for his friendship with Emma, Manny, and Toby in the early seasons but I wouldn't say it's near the top of my favorite Degrassi things list. I don't hate him but like you, I just don't gravitate towards the class clown type characters. I wasn't a fan of his more dramatic storylines either.

And I wasn't upset over the death of his character. Possibly because we predicted it was coming (that time was so annoying because everyone wanted it to be Toby, a character they decided wasn't needed. I'm glad that JT's death had an impact on many fans). But it's a shame that because of it Ryan can't ever return. Honestly the only time my eyes welled up with tears was during that behind the scenes video where they announced Ryan's departure from the show and he started crying. That tugged at the heart strings.

An Ashley fan! But I agree with you on her hair. I loved her season 3 and 4 hair. I actually didn't mind the short pixie cut either. I love it when girls have the guts to go short. And I don't mean "short" like shoulder length short. I mean actually short.

As for Ashley in Venus, I don't even take it seriously. IMO the writers needed a way to excuse Ellie's crush on her best friend's boyfriend so they decided to make her the villain. It's shame how they took her character less seriously in later seasons.

I loved JT for the first few seasons of the show, but I really hated him over his last few seasons and it got to the point that I too wasn't all that sad when he died.

As for Ashley, it's well known around these parts that I was not a fan. That said, I kind of liked her for most of Season 4. So, that's that.

Oh and I never really thought she was the villain in Venus, but that might have more to do with my feelings about her relationship with Craig than anything.

I was never a huge fan of JT either. Not that I actively disliked him, but I was pretty indifferent to him most of the time. I think I found him endearing only in the first two seasons. After that, when he was dating Manny or being a total jerk to Toby, I couldn't stand him. And I haaaaaaated JT and Liberty together, and their storyline in season 5, and all of season 5 in general, so I guess that yeah, I wasn't totally distraught about his death, either.

I always liked Ashley but she is definitely one of the most undeveloped and underused characters of the series. It's weird because she was kind of the star of season 1, and we got to see her depths in season 2. And I can't express how much I love the season 3 episode where she, Spinner, and Paige skip school. But otherwise she fell into this static girlfriend role and was always overshadowed by Craig or Jimmy. Her friendships with Ellie and Paige were just dropped. And did the writers forget that she and Toby were step-siblings?! I'll never understand how Ashley became so disposable.

At the moment, I dislike most of the current cast. It's okay, though, because season 11 will undoubtedly change that.

Heh, yeah. I'm like the biggest Ashley fan in my Degrassi-watching friends. I love her hair in the S3 and S4 theme song, but I know it would probably be hazardous if Melissa had to dye her hair everytime the red faded away. I dislike when it looked like they didn't know what to do with her hair. But this isn't a hair discussion thread, so I'll stop.
I don't like how they wrote her off poorly. She became Craig's accessory, then she went to England and 'broke his heart', then she moved on without breaking up with him and... ugh. I think the last time I liked her or justified her actions were in Time Stands Still?

Oh. I was happy that they broke up, because he cheated on her (I'll never let it go ) and she felt like his crutch. Now that I think of it, their relationship kind of reminds me of EClare, but this is the wrong thread to bring that up in.

AMEN. I don't like how the show takes any 'emo' or 'goth' character and makes them have depressed poems and new depths for a few episodes, then the next season they're all happy again. They could've turn her sadness in I Want Candy into depression or something.
And in GITM (4.01 & 4.02) she came off as a gold digger, in my opinion.

And I started liking JT in S3. He never annoyed me or anything, but I feel like his type of character belongs on a kid's show, not Degrassi. But I guess I'll always like him because the first episode I saw of Degrassi was the one where JT dies (Okay, so it was the Darcy pedophile one, but Rock This Town was like the second one or something). That episode didn't make sense to me as a 12 year old (My cousins had the remote ), but I feel like once I watch it now, I'm gonna cry.

I can't stand Sav, but he's a good big brother and he's really fun to laugh at.

Sav reminds me too much of my brother. Both are dorky, popular, and annoyingly immature at times.
