Episode 807 Discussion-Money For Nothing-- November 21, 2008

Mia’s T-Bombz campaign is hitting the city, and Degrassi. But Holly J has bigger and better things going on. She’s prepping the Power Squad for an out-of-town competition, and things are looking good. Her crush, Blue, has even asked her out! Holly J has all her ducks in line, until, she learns her parents in real financial turmoil so no more rides to school. Also, from now on, brown bag lunches, and no more trips to the mall. Desperate to keep up her top dog appearance and appease her financial crisis, Holly J spills her guts to Spinner in order to land a job at The Dot (despite her atrocious waitressing skills). Hurt by her family’s struggle, Holly J lashes out at Mia and plans to destroy her new glam status. Mia’s secret about Tom has landed in Holly J’s hands, and she’s thinking of sharing it with the world.

Things are close to perfect for Peter who is happily enjoying the band, Mia, and his pad. Until, Ms. Hatzilakos unexpectedly drops in for a visit. She’ll be staying with Peter for a bit while she’s in town. Peter quickly discovers that his life isn’t so rad with mom around. She’s treating Peter like a kid, when he feels he’s becoming a responsible adult. What does Peter need to do to show his mom he’s grown up? (CTV Media)

I can seriously see myself shipping Spinner and Holly J already. I really like him with Jane and it totally wasn't the point of the episode, but still...

Holly J is a brat with the social skills of a greedy 3 year old, but every now and again I like her. This episode was one of those times, even though she basically brought everything on herself. And what she did was wrong, but I'm glad Mia's stupid actions were brought to light. But what was with the squad sticking by her and voting Holly J off? Most of those girls live to torment each other, especially Chante. She had no right to say anything about being confused when somebody said something mean and gossipy against a team member. Hypocrit much?

Barely cared about Peter, except GROSS that he would sing a song like that in front of his mom.

I loved this episode. I really felt bad for Holly J, and when Blue said "You're the kind of girl who expects everything handed to her on a silver platter. And I'm not interested in that." I was just like, CAN THE UNIVERSE GIVE THIS GIRL A BREAK ALREADY? I actually honestly got slightly tearful at that point. Also, may I mention I love Peter now? I don't particularly care for Pia, but is reaction to the whole "sex parties" thing was adorable... who is that understanding? Peter has come a long way.

I really liked the episode.

You're right Anchor, Chantay was weird for sticking up for Mia.
When Manny showed off her boobs, Chantay came in and made fun of Manny and revealed to Paige of what she had done. Causing Manny to get kicked off.
Mia did something similar this time around, but I guess people change.

I did not like this episode at all. I don't think it was as bad as 804, but other than that it sucked.

The only good part about this episode was Peter's storyline with his Mom. It's funny because I did not expect much from that little subplot, but it was really good!! It was funny and sweet all at the same time. I loved the band practice scene. LOL!

Mia and the Peter/Mia relationship was absolutely the worst part about this episode. This situation is becoming critical. When is Riley going to come and save Peter from Mia? I liked Mia in season 7. I was one of the few fans who was actually happy that she was getting more storylines. But in season 8 she's just awful. She's a terrible representation of teenage mothers. Have we even seen or heard from Isabella since the first episode??? When she was on that entertainment show, I was wondering if I had turned on Gossip Girl by mistake. What show is this again???????????

As for the mainplot, it had some good scenes. Like the one at the end with Holly J. and Spinner and also the scenes with Blue. But overall I found this issue to be handled so poorly. There are so many kids out there who have to deal with their parent's financial troubles. I know, because I was in that position when I was like 9/10. It can be so embarrassing not to be able to go on school trips, buy the coolest clothes, etc. To me, this episode almost seemed as if they were making fun of the whole thing. Like when Holly J. gets a job at The Dot. To me it was almost like they were making fun of her situation. Maybe that didn't come across for other people though.

Next week's Spinner/Jane 2 parter is going to be so lame. It's a two-part episode but instead of doing a huge issue which is what Degrassi always does for its two-parters, it's this silly relationship storyline where Spinner proposes to Jane. I wish we could just skip this episode and move onto the Riley episode.

803, 805, and 806 were SO GOOD. What is happening to Degrassi now?

I loved this twisted little version of "Twenty Bucks"! Holly J does need to grow up after this episode I am definitley seeing her as more three dimensional and I was sympothizing with her in the episode. It was so sad when she felt too embarrased to tell Blue that she didn't have the money so she just told him that she didn't like him. I wanted to cry. I also may like the Leia/Holly freindship! And the Spinner/Holly scene at the end was amazing, I loved how Spinner brought up stealing Jimmy's mp3.

Stop already, how many time you will bring up how bad was 804 ?! Please change the disc, it's getting old and tiresome

I guess i'm on the minority but I didn't think 803, 805, 806 were that good especially 803 that seem to be so hyped by the fans, overrated if you want my opinion !

That's my problem with season 8, actually I don't think any episode has been bad but not great either, somewhat the message falls flat in every single episode . Degrassi is just not exciting anymore this since S6 ownward.

I really enjoyed this episode.
BTW even though it was wrong of Holly J to say those things to the reporter, I laughed out loud when she did. Mia deserved what she got, though it wasn't Holly's place to dish it out. I appreciated the scenes between Holly and Spinner, especially the last one (and hey, continuity with the mp3!) I actually felt bad for Holly J, because even though she completely brought on everything herself, it was just one ****ty thing happening to her after another. And a giant WTF for Chante being so inconsistent. She gossips a LOT, told everyone about Manny's video in S5... now all of a sudden, she's above spreading vicious gossip? Leia, on the other hand... I'm annoyed that she's telling everyone about Mia's mistake, and that she's still holding this grudge... but it just came more naturally than the usual gossip we see from Chante. And I still find Mia insufferable.

The b-plot was cute. It was nice to see Ms.H again. I don't know... I don't really have too much to say about this story.

I actually liked this ep a lot. The ending scene with Spinner and Holly J. was just great and it really made a lot of sense. I'm glad they brought up the Spinner/Jimmy friendship and paralleled it with Holly J.'s situation. The subplot with Peter and Ms. Hatzilakos was pretty good too. I'm not Mia's biggest fan, so I couldn't stand her at all, but the ep was still good for me anyways.

I really hope that Holly J. can mend things with Blue, because those two were just so promising. Also, Chante needs to go away ASAP. Ugh. Too annoying.

Also, I've definitely been in Holly J.'s situation before, so I can definitely sympathize with her, but I really don't think she went about things the right way. Then again, this is Holly J.

I personally think that all of the episodes this season keep getting better and better in terms of the issues they're addressing, how they're playing out and especially with continuity (which is something Degrassi's never been good at). To get a reference not only to the beginning of the season (and it's good to see that Mia's indiscretions aren't being glossed over) but also a reference to the beginning of the series (Jimmy/Spinner) is mind-blowing.

I like Holly J because I think she is socially inept, which is interesting for a "mean girl". She's basically what Darcy's sister would be if she focused her attention on being popular. It's like she plugged in this formula of how to be the alpha female, be catty, look good, exert power over others, but she doesn't know how to actually interact. I feel bad for her but because there's something about her that won't let her stop being mean even when she knows it's wrong, you still hate her a bit. It's intriguing.

I loved this episode and hopefully this isn't the end of the bad things to come for Mia now that it's starting to blow up at her. I'm upset at Chante because Manny (who obviously was her friend in season 4) made a mistake letting Peter film her with her top off and expose her and she basicly outted her in front of the whole spirit squad and got her kicked off, yet we have Mia who did something totally worse than what Manny did, admitting to what she did after Holly J spilled it out on national television and she acts like its nothing because Mia can get her into fun things and get her stuff! I don't condone what Holly J did but I don't think Holly J should have to suffer alone.

That crying scene with Mia sucked. THE worst crying scene in Degrassi history.

The subplot was great as well. It's a wrapup for how they ended season 7 with Peter's storyline and it's nice to see some friendly interaction between Peter and Ms. H because it seems that a lot of the scenes they share together on the show Peters in trouble or theres some sort of resentment. The band stuff was awesome! They aren't the best band in the world but the lyrics were hilarious.

I think that's a damn near perfect way to describe her and expresses much of the same reasons why I like Holly J. as well.

And as you might expect, I enjoyed this episode quite a bit. I liked how with each of her mean girl moves, you could see more and more of her guilt. In a lot of ways, I really don't think she wants to even be a mean girl, but she's probably been that for so long it's likely all she knows. It helps here that Charlotte is one of the better actors on the show imo. As for her being knocked down a few pegs, she had that coming. It will be interesting to see where they go with her from her.

That scene with her and Spin at the end was just wonderful. I loved it how it touched on Spin stealing the MP3 player and even went back a little bit to Holly J.'s conversation with Anya towards the end of Ladies Night. And it was done in a subtle and quiet way, its tone being a major factor in the scene's quality. Strong work by both actors as well.

As for the subplot, I liked that they played the angle of Hot Sauce missing Peter more so than her disapproving of his living situation. I also liked that Peter was able to figure out that's where she was coming and that tried to reach out to her at the end. As mentioned, it was a lingering storyline from last season and it was a solid wrap up to it.

Peter and Mia? I'm pretty indifferent. Not the best, not the worst. The stuff with the band was funny, so that was a plus.

One final thing, we all talk about how annoying Chantay is (and she is) with her gossip, but Leah seems to have a pretty big mouth of her own, doesn't she?

All and all, a strong episode, maybe my favorite of the season.

Oh....and Pink Floyd? Seriously? Pink Floyd?
