Darlton(Damon/Carlton) #1: "The cow is hanging out with the monster? Season6 is all about that."

welcome to the,
Damon Lindelof & Carlton Cuse
Appreciation Thread

Carlton Cuse: [goofy French accent] Bonjour Damon.

Damon Lindelof: [goofy French accent] Hello Carlton

Calton Cuse

Although born in Mexico City on 22 March 1959, Carlton Cuse grew up in Boston and Orange County, California.
He was a student at The Putney School. He then attended Harvard University, graduating with a degree in American History.
He started his career in feature films working first as a development executive then formed a partnership with feature writer, Jeffrey Boam.
Working with Boam, Cuse helped develop the films Lethal Weapon 2, Lethal Weapon 3
and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

In television, Mr. Cuse began his writing career on the Michael Mann series Crime Story.
He co-created and executive produced the critically acclaimed FOX series The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
He created and executive produced all six seasons of Nash Bridges. He also created and executive produced
the CBS series Martial Law starring Arsenio Hall and Sammo Hung Kam-Bo,
and co-created and executive produced the short-lived series Black Sash on The WB.

He currently executive produces and is the showrunner on Lost along with Damon Lindelof.
Cuse has won an Emmy, a Golden Globe, a Producers Guild Award, and a Writers Guild Award for his work on the show.
He has two other Emmy nominations as a writer for Lost episodes.

Damon Lindelof

On April 24, 1973, Damon Lindelof was born. He is a native of Teaneck, New Jersey, where he attended Teaneck High School,
a school whose diverse student body he credits with expanding his horizons as a writer.

He attended film school at New York University, performing briefly in the band "Petting Zoo", and then after graduating, moved to Los Angeles.
An early boost to his writing career came in 1999, when he was selected as a semifinalist for a prestigious
Nicholl Fellowship for his screenplay "Perfectionists."

Lindelof is also the writer of the 2006 comic book miniseries Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk for Marvel Comics,
which takes place in the Ultimate Marvel universe. He has put out 2 issues of the 6 issue arc since January 2006.
This has brought him under heavy scrutiny with the comic book fan community.

He is a self-professed Stephen King fan and has placed many references to King's work into Lost.
Lindelof has been quoted as saying that the graphic novel Watchmen, written by Alan Moore,
is the greatest piece of popular fiction ever produced, and its effect on Lost is evident many times in the show.[citation needed]

He is currently showrunner (alongside Carlton Cuse) on Lost and is serving as producer on Star Trek.
After Lost concludes in 2010, it is widely believed that he will co-write and produce a film adaptation of
Stephen King's The Dark Tower series with J.J. Abrams.

Damon: You know how much people love the episode where we found out how Jack got his tattoos, well wait ‘til you find out how Ezra James Sharkington got his Dharma tattoo. What if he got it… Wait… What if Ezra James Sharkington got his Dharma tattoo from Bai Ling? Then she could come back and finish that six episode arc she’s talking about. He can be like, “I will bite your face if you do not give me a Dharma tattoo!"

Carlton: You know, I think the show has to constantly keep moving forward, it’s a story-based series, it’s not a franchise based series. So with any great epic story, you’re constantly going to meet new characters and that’s just a part of the evolution of the story.

Damon: We just really, really love our fans, and it's great that they are so passionate about the show. And a lot of times we hear criticism and the same time we know it's their show, too

Carlton: I think Season One was the initial condition of crashing on this island and these characters being in denial about their situation and having to terms of probably we're not going to get off of here and when that raft blows up and Walt is taken, it's like 'okay, we're stuck here.

Damon: In television, if I write that Matthew Fox flies up around the island so he can see how big it is, we have to actually shoot that. In a comic book, you write it, somebody draws it and there it is. No budget, no actors. That frees you up to really do some outside-the-box storytelling.

Carlton: We're viewers with control.

Damon: I try not to comment on which characters will or will not be leaving the show, because it doesn’t create a very healthy working environment for the actors in Hawaii.

Carlton: We know what the ending is seriously. This is a show that demands an ending. We want to find out what is the fate of these people. Do they get off the island? What is the nature of the island? I mean there are some big fundamental questions that you want answered at the end of this show

Damon: (On the season 3 premiere of Lost) Here's what you won't see: Globetrotters, zombies, the guy Meredith Grey didn't choose, coconut radios, Laura Palmer, Jack laughing, Desmond running naked through the jungle, the Others' annual talent show, buttons, timers, electromagnetic anomalies, Cylons, cyclones, or clones, nanobots, Captain Jack Sparrow, and time travel.

Carlton: If you don't have new questions, the show is over.

Damon: There are different facets of my personality that are reflected in different characters. The character that I identified with most last year was Jack, because he was thrust into a leadership role that he wasn’t fully ready to take on. He had to make a series of hard decisions that weren’t necessarily popular decisions. Entering the foray of being the executive producer of a television show, I could identify with his life situation more than I could with any of the other characters’ life situations. But I also feel that I have a cynical sense of humor that is reflected in Sawyer’s dialogue, and I have a vulnerable side that I always think about when I’m writing Kate. I have a happier, hippier, dippier side that is reflected when I’m writing Hurley.

Joined Interviews/Podcasts

Carlton Cuse: Ok. Alright, well knock on this wood here. [knocks on something that's obviously not wood and chuckles]

Damon Lindelof: Should we uh... let's talk a little bit about -

Carlton Cuse: I'm sorry; I didn't mean to touch your leg like that.

Damon Lindelof: Yeah, it's ok. Uh, heh I like that my leg sounds like this [laughs and knocks on the thing Carlton knocked on]. That's why -

Carlton Cuse: [slight chuckling] You can tell people you have a wood leg, I think we've been doing this podcast for long enough for people to know that, I mean, especially since I've had to sit here with you wearing no pants and having a wood leg...

Damon Lindelof: I, I don't want to talk about my leg.

Carlton Cuse: Just to argue the Storm Troopers side of this, they have to preserve order... in the Alliance. And-

Damon Lindelof: And you can't have people drinking out of plastic Tupperware. [chuckle]

Carlton Cuse: They're responsible for raising a rebel leader!

Damon Lindelof: But they didn't- I mean the Storm Troopers didn't even know that yet. They were just going to recover the droids with the stolen plans. The droids aren't here, Let's kill everybody!

Carlton Cuse: Let's say you run a red light and you say "Oh I didn't see the red light," does that make it any less bad that you ran the red light?

Damon Lindelof: [mattter-of-factly] There are no red lights in Star Wars.

[Kris, Carlton, and Damon all laughing]

Damon Lindelof: They just fly where ever the hell they want to!

Carlton Cuse: Alright, this is from Jadernopants: What's up manerds I absolutely love the show and the podcast. Damon and Carlton, you are my podcast OTP.

Carlton Cuse: Although I don't know what OTP is embarrassingly.

Damon Lindelof: I know what OPP is.

Carlton Cuse: What's that?

Damon Lindelof: Other people's possessions.

Carlton Cuse: [laughing]

Damon Lindelof: Remember the old song?

Carlton Cuse: [still laughing] Wow. I wonder if we could do like a rap - banjo number.

Damon Lindelof: I-

Carlton Cuse: Maybe for season seven.

Damon Lindelof: I think we could but I don't think we should.

Damon Lindelof: Favorite character?

Carlton Cuse: My favorite character would be uh Sawyer. I- I wish I was as cool as Sawyer, I like, you know, his uh-

Damon Lindelof: Chest

[Damon and Kris laughing]

Carlton Cuse: That too. You know, he's just uh-

Damon Lindelof: Sexy

Carlton Cuse: He's just sort of you know sexy dangerous kind of-

Damon Lindelof: Toned, tanned...

Carlton Cuse: Yes, he's kind of all the things I'm not in real life, so uh, who's your favorite character?

Damon Lindelof: My first love is definitely Jack. I don't know, I sympathize with him because I feel like he can come across as being so imperious and I know like on the boards people are like "Oh my god, he's such an a-hole. Why is he so mean all the time?" But at the end of the day, Jack is the one who's driving like all the things that are happening on the Island. The decisions that he's making are eventually going to get the Oceanic Six off, and being a leader is tough man. I mean maybe his approval rating is low, but I think he's trying- [Carlton laughs] I think he's trying as hard- he's doing his best.

Carlton Cuse: Do you- do you like him better with chest hair, or without chest hair?

Damon Lindelof: I- I- I miss the chest hair, I got to tell you.

[both laughing]

Damon Lindelof: I do.

Carlton Cuse: Oh, wow. [still laughing]
