Been watching Lost from episode one.
I've come to the conclusion that the only way that some of the things that happen is due to Virtual Reality.

I don't mean to destroy the show, but bear with me here.

There was a plane crash.
There were survivors.
There were fatalities.

A certain number of the survivors were actually critical condition with let's say 10% chance of survival. A certain number of survivors were 1% chance of survival. The 1%ers are the people like the Marshal. They take all these critical condition, verge of death, comatose victims and stick them into a Virtual Reality environment so that their brains do not turn to cabbage. The VR environment is self evolving and adjusts to the needs and wants of the "survivors".

Keep in mind that this was all done as an "emergency" so very little was known about the survivors. One example of this is Locke. The programmers had little chance to know that Locke was a cripple so in the simulation they allowed him to walk. Thus, he knows that the island cannot be real. He accepts it as a fantasy world that he can effect and have control over. He's figured out the program cycle, know's when it's going to rain, know that if you want something the island will provide it, and knows that he can blow the cover but "like the moth, you would be too weak to survive."

Fatalities are "survivors" who don't make it. The pilot and the marshal are the two prime examples. Clara was abducted because she was going into labor anf the real life doctors knew it was either her or the baby, and at least the baby had a better than average chance.

Nothing happens on the island without someone thinking about it first. "I think there are other people on the island" the french woman shows up. "I think there are things out in the jungle" then the trees start to move with some un-named giant monster. etc...

Everything that has happened is cause and effect. Nothing happens spontaneously outside of the group.

Hurley is a plant by the programmers. "Let's take a poll and see who everyone is" . "Let's make a golf course and get everyone out of survival mode into living mode".

The programmers found the corpse of Jack's father in the wreckage and decided to make a SIM of it to see who "it belonged to".

More and more examples can be come up with.
