A timely title for this thread could be: "What is happening to this world?"

If you had not heard yet, "Aunt Jemima" syrup is getting taken off shelves at stores permanently in all likelihood. I haven't had that syrup before, nor knew of that name & brand being controversial. I did pickup some earlier this week at Wal-Mart because I was unsure if I'd ever get a chance again. I was at a Safeway about 5 miles away today & it's already off the shelves there. I don't even think that I knew of Aunt Jemima growing up. I don't remember seeing commercials for it. Mrs. Butterworth I remember because in commercials she had moved her arms around & talked. Anyway, generally I think that people should be able to buy just about anything that they want to, but also reading about the history of Aunt Jemima I understand why people are offended by that product no matter how well the syrup tastes. It does seem like this perhaps could have happened many years ago also, which would have helped educate myself & likely others more on Aunt Jemima & racism. Any thoughts on this?

Yeah. Also Uncle Ben's rice is leaving shelves as well. Rice is a food that I have not ate much of. It's not a food that on a particular holiday I've tried to eat it on, so I probably won't miss it as much as others perhaps will. Looking forward to this weekend & no rain is expected in the Portland Metro Area during it. Hopefully my allergies are better than last night. Have a good day all.

You wanna know my thoughts on this, Matt? My thoughts are that this is gonna get out of control, and soon there won't be anything that people won't find offensive or inappropriate. This has nothing to do with equality anymore, this is about erasing our history and de-legitimizing our country. Where is this gonna end?

A good amount of this country's history is bad, so in that aspect I can see why some would want to erase it. "Aunt Gemini" was "based on a racial stereotype", according to parent company Quaker Oats. Now, the Uncle Ben image is said to be based on a maitre d'hotel named "Frank Brown", according to Forest Mars. He was the person in 1959 that purchased Erich Huzenlaub's interest in the company & merged it into his "Food Manufacturers Inc." Though not the same, an NFL team called "Redskins" is more offensive to me than Uncle Ben's Rice & I'd be impressed if the NFL convinced Washington owner Dan Snyder to change that franchise name.
