TEEN TITANS

By MAXINE SHEN

February 25, 2004 -- SUDDENLY, there is a horse race for the hearts and minds of the teenage viewers.
"The O.C.," which debuted with a bang last summer, is the hottest young drama since "90210."

But in recent weeks, it has begun to look over its shoulder to see if a new show, the WB`s "One Tree Hill," is catching up.

In ratings terms, "The O.C." is head and shoulders above "One Tree." But in the past two months, buzz for "One Tree Hill" has picked up.

The turning point seems to have been when the WB show returned from hiatus in January, re-airing the Nov. 18 cliffhanger - in which Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) turns to amphetamines to meet his father/basketball coach`s expectations.

Ratings for "One Tree Hill" have blossomed - now reaching an average 3.7 million viewers - although still nowhere near the 9.3 million that watch "The O.C."

" `One Tree Hill` is coming on strong, and Chad Michael Murray is the A-Rod of the female teen set," says a WB spokesman. No one would comment over at Fox.

Much of "One Tree Hill`s" popularity stems from the accessibility of the characters for the average American teen.

"I can relate to the characters [on `One Tree Hill`] - I was a cheerleader during basketball season [like Peyton, played by Hilarie Burton] - and being in high school, you start encountering the same types of things that are on the show - dating, alcohol, sex and drugs," says 15-year-old Ashley French, the founding editor of the first "One Tree Hill" newsletter at Onetreehill-fansite.com.

Adds Amy, the webmaster of Onetreehillonline.com, "While I love `The O.C.,` I`ve never quite connected to the children of Newport Beach millionaires in head-to-toe Prada, who party in beach houses and hotel penthouses."

The identification with the characters on "One Tree Hill" doesn`t mean fans now dislike "The O.C.," though.

To John Kim, commander-in-chief of The O.C. at Boalt, the University of California-Berkeley Law School`s "The O.C." fan club, "One Tree Hill" is nothing more than the "poor man`s `The O.C.,` plain and simple.

"There really is no distinction between the two guys - one is rich, one is poor, but they`re both jocks on the basketball team. Why would I want to watch a show with five characters all playing the same person?"

"What I appreciate about `The O.C.` is that for a major network show, they at least try to keep the characters unpredictable and multi-dimensional - like Luke [Chris Carmack], who went from total a-hole, to Ryan`s friend, to being outcast for having a gay dad, to having an affair with Marissa`s mom," says Meg Wilkinson, a member of The O.C. at Boalt.

Should "The O.C." worry about the growing popularity of "One Tree Hill"?

" `The O.C.` came first, plus it`s got `American Idol` as its lead-in - as Seth said in the pilot episode, `XO, XO, it`s an unbeatable combination!`" says Kim.
Well I will say one thing. We win the picture fight up top. Because Sophia is way hotter than Ben. And I`m saying this as a girl.

I totally agree.

I am really glad to hear that OTH is gaining popularity. I don`t watch The O.C., so I can`t really comment on which is best, but from the pictures I have seen, One Tree Hill`s cast is way hotter than The O.C.`s cast.

To give the honest truth, I could sure as hell live without the O.C. I find no connection to it, and sometimes I even turn it off.

One Tree Hill I just have a connection to..and I don`t know why. But to me, it will ALWAYS be ahead of the O.C. JMO.

Zap2it has ISB coming in with an overnight rating of 3.0/5. I`m not really sure how good that is. It`s not bad but... oh well, everything is relative.

Well I`m 27 & can`t get into the OC. I have no connections to that show, and I don`t think it`s portrayal of teens is realistic at all. I can relate to OTH. It`s life in a small town personified! I feel like I`m in high school again!

Interesting article but I don`t understand why the journalist is trying to make it seem like The OC and OTH are competition with one another. They are not even in the same league as each other. While the OTH cast is finally starting to get some media attention the OC cast gets way more exposure and press. The WB has promoted the Sheryl Crowe appearance in next week`s episode more then the media it`s self and she`s a big name.

-Yesterday`s Winners:
American Idol (Fox), America`s Next Top Model (UPN), Law & Order: SVU (NBC)

-Also Worthy of a Positive Mention:
Frasier (NBC), Super Millionaire (ABC), Judging Amy (CBS)

-Yesterday`s Losers:
8 Simple Rules (ABC), Whoopi (NBC), Happy Family (NBC), I`m With Her (ABC),

-American Idol Update:
In a considerably better show than last week, the two obvious standouts were LaToya London and Leah LaBelle. How do you like that? A new LaToya and a new LaBelle! Worst overall was Jonah Moananu while "pen salesman" Jon Peter Lewis gets my vote for the dumbest after performance interview. Since personality is almost as important as the performance itself he totally blew it.

-Ratings Breakdown:
As expected, Fox led the Tuesday troops with its combination of American Idol (#1 for the evening: 16.3/23) and 24 (#3: 7.5/10) 32 percent above second place CBS. Once the nationals are released, however, CBS is expected to dip to fourth for the evening among adults 18-49 following Fox, NBC and ABC.

Second in the 8 p.m. hour (based on the overnights) was CBS` reliable Navy NCIS (9.0/13) followed by NBC sitcoms Whoopi (5.8/ 8) and Happy Family (4.7/ 7), ABC sitcoms 8 Simple Rules (5.6/ 8) and I`m With Her (4.5/ 6), the WB`s Gilmore Girls (4.8/ 7), and One On One and All Of Us (3.5/ 5) on UPN.

Navy NCIS` still potent performance opposite American Idol is similar to former occupant (and parent show) JAG against ABC`s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in its heyday. Yes - there is nothing wrong with an alternative for older skewing viewers.

At 9 p.m., CBS` on-the-fence The Guardian (8.3/12) was first in the overnights followed by NBC`s Frasier (8.7/12) and Scrubs (7.1/10), Fox`s aforementioned 24 (7.5/11), ABC`s According To Jim (6.5/ 9) and Less Than Perfect (5.9/ 8), UPN`s America`s Next Top Model (6.1/ 9) and the WB`s One Tree Hill (4.2/ 6). Once the nationals are released, of course, The Guardian will fall to the number four spot among adults 18-49.

As for America`s Next Top Model, growth of 74 percent out of All Of Us and a 45 percent advantage over the competing One Tree Hill keeps the red-hot reality hour in the winner`s circle.

At 10 p.m., although ABC`s Super Millionaire leveled off to a third place 9.4/14 in night three (with an expected second place finish among adults 18-49), the game show was up 59 percent from lead-in Less Than Perfect with a 24 percent advantage over the regularly scheduled NYPD Blue last Tuesday (7.6/11 on Feb. 17).

First in the 10 p.m. hour in the overnights was NBC`s Law & Order: SVU (11.9/18) followed by Judging Amy (9.7/15).

Thanks for the ratings!

Even though I love Sophia, Ben wins for me in the picture fight. What can I say, I love the bad boys.

I love both shows so it is good to see them both being popular.

Not really sure why Kristin put OTH on the list, since (I don`t think) it`s in as much danger as these other shows...

Don`t Hate TV Execs for Arresting Your Favorite Series--Save a Show with Your Vote

by Kristin | Feb. 27, 2004
(The artist formerly known as Wanda)

And so it begins. That nail-biting, hair-pulling, edge-of-your-La-Z-Boy time of year when we wait...and wait...and wait to see if our favorite shows will survive to see the light of fall.

We are tubers. We have no patience. And, personally, I think it`s the cruelest form of torture imaginable (well, other than that dentist dude on Alias who rips out teeth--that can`t feel good).

Last week`s surprise cancellation of Angel was a wake-up call that some of the shows we are expecting to see next fall could instead go up to the big rerun channel in the sky. And, right now, network execs are making their decisions about what sticks around (final schedules are announced in May).

SOS! So, now seems the perfect time to roll out our fourth annual (eesh, I am getting old) Save One Show campaign.

Here`s how it works: (1) Check out the list of shows below with questionable fates--meaning they have not yet been picked up for next season, and in most cases, don`t have the ratings to presume a renewal; and (2) pick the one show (one!) you simply cannot live without, and vote in our SOS poll. (If you`re feeling verbose, you can also send me an email, and tell me why you think the show deserves to live.) How simple is that?

Now, here`s my part. After I receive your votes and tally them, do the hokeypokey and turn myself around (that`s just for fun), I will write up a big, fancy column featuring a desperate plea to save the top three contenders. That column will be sent to the appropriate network suits (along with some of your emailed thoughts) so they can see how much we fans care.

This Year`s Endangered Series List:

Angel: To be honest, it was a difficult decision whether to include Angel because, as you know, it has already been canceled. However, as you also probably know, Joss Whedon`s camp has pitched the former WB show to UPN, which would be our target here. Despite my comments in this week`s chat (that the peeps at UPN say it`s not likely), I never say die when it comes to my favorite undead. So, in addition to voting for Angel (if that`s your calling), make sure you check out the petition at SupportAngel.org.

Arrested Development: This one is rave reviews, awards, kudos and hands down my favorite new show of the season. Per usual, cancellation is imminent. Howevah! There is a glimmer of hope. Last week, Fox decided, last minute, to preempt Arrested with Bernie Mac, and Mac received an audience (6.3 million viewers) similar to that garnered by A.D. (Showing that time slot is not a walk in the park.) And, hopefully, Heather Graham`s guest stint on March 7 will reel in new viewers--honestly, peeps, it has some of the funniest moments I`ve ever seen on television. Maven`s honor.

Boston Public: Officially, B.P. is "on hiatus" for the rest of the season to clear the way for Wonderfalls (that show I can`t stop raving about). The David E. Kelley series has struggled in the ratings since moving to Friday nights (surprise, surprise), and its season finale aired on Jan. 30. B.P. is not expected to return.

Ed: Barring all miracles (like, ahem, your massive show of support) it looks as if Ed and Carol`s trip down the altar was the show`s swan song. Sources close to NBC say higher-ups are ready to cut the cord, especially with reruns of the unflappable (and not just Donald`s hair) Apprentice doing well in Ed`s former slot on Wednesday nights. Phewey!

Enterprise: Dropping Star Trek from the show`s title Enterprise didn`t inspire quite the ratings boom UPN had hoped for. Insiders say higher-ups will be watching ratings very closely for the next few weeks to decide whether the series has enough steam to come back in the fall. Current audience: 3.5 million.

Miss Match: It seemed the surest bet of the season, what with Darren Star and an all-growed-up Alicia Silverstone. But Miss Match suffered against CBS` Joan of Arcadia on Friday nights (improving only slightly when it moved to 9 p.m.) and has been on hiatus since Dec. 15. NBC says the show will return "this spring" but so far, there`s no set date. And no pickup yet for fall.

One Tree Hill: Those of us still pining over the loss of Joey, Dawson and Pacey (sigh...let`s take a moment) have found a little reprieve in One Tree Hill, one of the best teen-angst guilty pleasures of the season. There has been no second-season pickup yet, but the show has picked up steam since its premiere (2.5 million to 3.2 million viewers), and it`s the fifth-ranked drama on network TV among female teenagers. (Psst...By the way, Sheryl Crow guests this Tuesday--check it out.)

Tru Calling: So strange. Fox put a new show up against Friends and Survivor on Thursday nights and (looky there!) it didn`t do so well. Despite Buffy fans` excitement over the return of Eliza Dushku, Tru Calling is currently rated 131 out of 165 shows in the Nielsens and doesn`t look likely to get a second season.

Now, go vote. And if you want to testify about your TV addiction, email me about why that show is your must-see TV (put the show`s name in the subject line), then check back for the results next week.
