It wouldn't have vilified Nathan that early on, he was a kid and all he knew was toxic. Acknowledging that and letting him grow and break the cycle would have been fantastic. As it is, they broke the cycle sure, but they never acknowledged he was already going down that dark path and managed to get off of it.
