I think certain subjects shouldn't be handled the same way in a supernatural show and an human show.
For example, compulsion - regardless of the situation - is an abuse and if we start feeling defensive every time a vampire uses it, we'd have a problem while manipulative and liars characters in shows like GG shouldn't get away with how low their schemes go to accomplish their goals.
I really think it's telling that when a female (in addition to Kat) actually had the chance to be the bad guy, she only aimed on female characters - that are often aimed by the male characters.
I think the writers are not aware of how they're handling this and it only makes it worse (the same goes with the racism undertones) because when it's not purposeful it can be more powerful as subliminal messages are registered in the brain when the person isn't much aware of them as well.
and in shows which targets are such young people, most of them won't ask themselves if the show is misogynistic or racist, they'll just watch it for the fun part of it, but the values are there, and they're are not only being registered by also consumed. And then we we raise such points a lot of people get defensive and think we're exaggerating because they can't see misogyny or racism and that's when we realize people start accepting those things as if they were okay because they aren't presented in a blunt offensive manner. They're subtle probably because the producers and writers aren't even aware of how they're being sexist, homophobic and other things in their writing. And that's the problem because blunt racism and misogyny is an easy target that everyone rejects, without realizing that when it's more subtle they not only agree but also support it unconsciously.

This is extremely problematic and a very serious issiue with a lot of teen shows but particularily TVD. Everything is so blatant and at the same time not. It is so blatant because we can feel it in the undertones of the writing but it is still unintentional from the writer's end. To not discuss it is a little offensive to me. I need to be able to express what I know I am witnessing so that I remind myself that these are not my standards and I do not abide by such ugliness that is hidden in TVD's message. I need to rise above their blatant racism and sexism and I can do this by discussing when I see or feel it.

Well, I've always felt that a lot of people who post here at Fan Forum are very intelligent and they see things in these shows, good and bad, that other people may not. I honestly don't know what the average viewer of these types of shows think, but I've always been impressed with the discussions that we've had here at Fan Forum over the years about these shows and other topics.

Seriously. That's why it was hard to differentiate whether it was an attribute of Elena's character that she had a very misogynistic attitude towards the women in her life vs. the men or if that was just JP in general glorifying the golden penises.

Lol TVD.net had a forum (but it's closed now), and there was a board called "the dungeon" where you could hate on any character, so basically every character had an anti thread and Caroline's was getting trolled by her own fans, like they literally couldn't believe that people could hate her, so one girl was like "this is the dungeon and you're allowed to vent here", and someone replied "good. Caroline haters belong in a dungeon" lmaooooo

And Elenas thread was always at the top
