airdate: 9/21/04

Gilmore Girls
"Say Goodbye To Daisy Miller"
Tuesday, September 21
Season Premiere
8:00 - 9:00 PM ET

ROMANCE AND ROAST BEEF - Picking up on the same night as last season's finale, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) is very upset that Rory (Alexis Bledel) has lost her virginity to her married ex-boyfriend Dean (Jared Padalecki). Luke (Scott Patterson) is happy and relieved to learn that Lorelai wants to pursue their new romantic relationship. Meanwhile, after announcing that she and Richard (Edward Herrmann) are officially separated, Emily (Kelly Bishop) decides to leave immediately for Paris. Realizing that Dean's marriage may not be over after all, Rory agrees to spend the summer in Europe with Emily. Melissa McCarthy, Keiko Agena, Yanic Truesdale, Liz Torres and Sean Gunn also star. Amy Sherman-Palladino wrote and directed the episode

Photos up at fanbolt. Link at http://www.gilmore-girls.net/spoilers.html

The season premiere doesn't open exactly where the last season left off, but this doesn't mean that there is a huge jump in time, either.

The season opens somewhere BACK in time.

Rory is not in Europe when the season starts. Rory does leave for Europe, however, at the end of the premiere.

The "usual suspects" are in the premiere. Christopher, Jason, and Paris are not.

Lindsay makes an appearance in this episode.

Info taken from Sides in the Pre-shooting Script 7/29/04

Characters:
Luciano - Concierge Rome Hotel
Nancy Krumholze - Mother
Mike Krumholze - Father
Ethan Krumholze - Young Boy
Joanna Krumholze - Young Girl
Shannon - Girl (Lane's age)

At or Near begining of show - Rome Hotel Suite Late Afternoon - Emily in her usual condescending manner towards servants complains to the Concierge about the heat. He says that he will adjust the air conditioning. From the suite balcony, Rory comments on the spectacular view, the Concierge notes that it is the same room (518) that Emily had when staying two years ago. Emily complains that the ruins do not look the same as before when she was here.

The Emily askes the Concierge if his High Tea will be at the same time as before. She tells the Concierge that he will need to book some private tours: The Vatican, Villa Medici for just Rory and her. Emily makes an abiguous reference about the Concierge in Florence sticking "us" with a Belgian couple. Ed Note: From the context, you cannot tell if the 'us' is Rory and Emily or Emily on her prior trip to Italy. Rory and Emily may have been in Florence prior to Rome.

The scene sequence concludes with Rory making arrangements with the Concierge for directions to the Catacombs. The Concierge says that Bone Disturb her grandmother. Rory says it is for her while her Grandmother takes her afternoon nap. Emily comes back in scene complaining about needing more pillows.

The Krumholzes are staying at the Inn - Mike is the dad, Nancy is the mom, kids Ethan (7) and Joanna (played by Abigail Mavity) (9). They interact with Lorelai and Michel. The parents want to go antique-ing but the kids want to stay at the Inn with Michel. Lorelai encourages the children to play hide and seek with Michel. Michel is not happy but Lorelai tells him he needs to play nice with the children to foster goodwill, word of mouth b/c they are a new business. Michel plays Chinese checkers with the kids.

Later, there is a Cider Mill parade, where Lorelai sees Michel with the kids. She is there with Luke but his dialogue is blocked out. Apparently they are watching Miss Patty's little dancing apples (according to stage direction).

There is some dialog blacked out, including what appears to be an exchange between Luke and Lorelai.

Lane - Sequence starts in between Krumholze Scenes
Lane at work in Luke's diner where Zack and Brian are going back an forth about song sequence for a gig. They begin to break up with Brian leaving for work. Lane goes the counter and turns around to fins Zack gretting two "trollopy-looking" girls - Trina and Shannon. Zack greets both of them by kissing them on the cheek. We see Lane look very unhappy.

Sometime later in Luke's Diner (2nd part of Krumholze sequence has occurred)
Lane is harassing Caesar about his Caesar salad. She says there already is a famous one. Caesar says his has an "aprostrophe 'S."

Cut to Zack, Shannon, and Trina entering the Diner. Their pop culture conversation is about Dan Brown's - The Da Vinci Code. Zack says that Mary Magdalene goes to Gaul to have the kid. Shannon asks "That's the ****ty one, right?" Trina chimes in about it being all so confusing "'cause they're all named Mary." Zack says she's not the Mon, but she's not ****ty. That's what Constantine wanted everyone to think.

Lane comes over to the group with an ATTITUDE, full of contempt. Lane gives Zack grief about not waiting to be seated. Zack comes back at her about waiting at Lukes. Lane says that's what they do at Denny's, so it's what they will do here. Zack offers to order for all of them. Lane comes with some more ATTITUDE. Zack and Lane go back and forth for a bit with Zack finally saying that they are leaving for Al's Pancake House. Lane hisses a - "Fine, Go." Lane goes back to the counter hearing them leave behind her.

Unexpectedly - we hear Shannon call Lane from offscreen and then enter the frame apologizing, saying "We didn't know." Lane asks - "Know what." Shannon smiles and nods toward Zack waiting just outside the door. Shannon continues with a knowing look as she heads for the door.

5.03 Written in the Stars
airdate: 10/5/04

From: Jet1945 and gluglug

Info taken from Sides in the Pre-shooting Script 8/10/04

Characters:
Robert – Valet to Richard Gilmore
Madonna Louise – Maid to Emily Gilmore
Linda – Glenn’s Mother
Bob – Glenn’s father
Colin – Yale student (Episode 5.03 only??)
Quinn – Yale Student (Recurring Character)
Logan – Yale Student (Recurring Character)
Mazie – 60ish Woman (Buddy’s Wife?? And Luke’s Friend)
Buddy – Early 70’s Man (Mazie’s Husband?? And Luke’s Friend)

At or Near the very beginning of show – Apparent Night - The scene sequence with Richard, Robert, Lorelai, Rory, the Maid, and Emily segues from Richard in his residence to Emily in the Main House. It is evident that Emily is as intimidating to the servants as ever. Richard has a valet named Robert and Lorelai makes gay jokes to Rory. They have been served cheese and drinks. Emily's maid comes to the door and tells them that dinner is ready at the main house. Lorelai chugs her martini and Robert helps them on with their coats. As they enter the main house, they comment how weird things are.

Gilmore House - Day 2 - There is a scene just between Emily and the Maid that makes it obvious that Emily and Richard are only communicating with each other through the servants.

Next Day – Day 2 - Morning Branford Courtyard – The scene sequence starts with Rory directing movers with her Grandmother’s provided furniture. Then Glenn – His Mom and Dad scene segues into the first encounter with Marty. What follows is the Paris – Rory phone call about Asher and concluding with Marty’s comment about losing the pool. The scene sequence wraps up with a Glenn saying goodbye to his parents and a pop culture reference to Mrs. Robinson when his Mom goes to kiss him goodbye.

In sequence Cut To Stars Hollow. – This is the scene sequence between Lorelai and Kirk about his diet.
Ed. Note: There are obvious additional scene(s) following but not many before Act Two Start.

Act Two Start – Day 2 - Yale Courtyard – This is the Marty – Rory conversation about Marty’s parentage. Marty asks Rory about what she did over the summer.
Ed. Note: It is my read that Rory’s ducks answering the question as opposed to an interruption.

It is here that we first see the “three young, rich, privileged kids” when Colin bumps into Marty. The primary banter back and forth is between Marty and Logan. Logan is there with his arm around a pretty girl. The conversation is stereotypical rich kids talking down to Marty.

Rory’s Room – A little later – This is where we find out about the living arrangements – Paris and Rory together – separate bedrooms on a common room. Paris did the setup because she switched rooms with Rory. Rory tries to comfort Paris about Asher’s death.

Luke and Lorelai are on a date. Lorelai makes a comment, to which Luke replies "Dirty?" They go to a restaurant (formerly a whorehouse) run by an old "energetic and sharp" couple, Mazie and Buddy. Mazie and Buddy are teasing Luke, call him Lucas and give him a hard time when he orders beer instead of champagne. Mazie insists on serving them champagne because they're on a date. Buddy says Lorelai is beautiful and Luke says he had nothing to do with it. Mazie says he shouldn't order anything with garlic "to give the boy a chance." Mazie tells Lorelai that Luke is special and Lorelai agrees.

A couple more tidbits about the date. Luke gives Mazie a hug when greeting her. Mazie says they're excited b/c "Lucas never brings his girls here."

The page ends with Lorelai saying "So they know you."

Assumed Act 3 Started - Next Day – (Day 3)– Rory/Paris Common Room – Here’s where Rory offers to put up the flyers for Asher’s Memorial Service. Rory leaves.

Cut to Branford Courtyard – Rory is taping up the flyers and our Three Young Studs appear. Logan is obviously pushing the other two in looking a particular place. Quinn goes over to Rory’s door and says “This is where she lives.” Rory observes Quinn and the comment.
Ed. Note: The actual dialog line by Quinn is ambiguous as to whom it is referring to. Logan is the one who wants to know where “She” lives. We don’t know if it’s Rory or because of the flyers for Asher – Paris. The Side ends with Quinn’s line.

Day 3 - Gilmore House - Emily is dining alone, eating an omelet, listening to Tony Bennett. Her maid Madonna Louise (Ciccone?) offers dessert. Emily says she smelled something funny in the kitchen and ML says she sprayed for ants. ML leaves and Emily is all alone, in the silence. She goes to the living room, tries to read a book and sees headlights flash by the window. We hear a car drive away and Emily is astonished at what she just saw (?)

5.04 Tippecanoe and Taylor, Too

From Jet1945

Info taken from Sides in the Pre-shooting Script 8/22/04

Characters:
Maggie – Older woman shopper in Taylor’s Store
May – Dean’s Mother
Mira – Groupie for Zack’s/Lane’s Band
Cherry – Groupie for Zack’s/Lane’s Band

Near the beginning of show – Scene 9 – Day Interior of Taylor’s Store - The scene involves Taylor, Jackson, and Maggie. Taylor is checking out an unnamed customer with a little girl. As they leave he gives the little girl a balloon with a “Vote For Taylor” slogan printed on it and reminds the father that the Election’s on Tuesday. What follows is a two page fluffy three-way banter between Taylor – Jackson – Maggie about Taylor’s produce.

Dean’s Parents House Interior – Night 3 - Scene 15 - Apparently after dinner has been eaten – Clara (Dean’s little sister), May – Dean’s Mom and Rory and Dean are in scene.

Dean and Rory have apparently just walked in. Clara bursts in excited to see Rory and hugs Rory and whispers in her ear “I’m so glad you’re back. I never liked Lindsay.” Dean calls her on it and Clara says “I wouldn’t say that to Lindsay.”

May enters the scene. Stage Direction: The smile is there but it’s a little icy underneath.
May greets Rory and it is obvious that they have met before. May says the Dean’s father is in the basement and says hello also. Rory says hello back. May says that they are done with dinner but if Rory was hungry she could scrounge something to zap. Rory says she is fine. Dean says the are going upstairs and May says “All right”. End of scene.

Dean’s Parent’s House/Dean’s Bedroom – Moments later – Sc 16 – Night 3 – Stage description: It’s still the bedroom of a teenage boy: Car models, posters, a twin bed, a little boy's dresser, etc. Dean’s duffel bag is open on the floor – He hasn’t unpacked. In one corner, a sewing machine has been set up. There’s evidence someone’s making a dress. There’s an old TV – It’s the TV that’s made the living room to basement to kid’s room journey. Dean and Rory enter and Dean closes the door.

Rory remarks that it his old room and comments about the sewing machine and dressmaking. Dean says “I thought they’d gotten rid of this stuff by now.”

Stage Direction: Dean takes her hand. They haven’t kissed hello yet. He starts to pull her in to do so, and Avril Lavigne’s “My Happy Ending” starts blaring from the next room. They separate.

Dean says “Sorry” and pounds on the wall. We hear May call Dean from off screen and ask “Just Wondering how late Rory’s gonna be here.” Dean answers “I don’t know exactly.” May says she needs to know so she can set the alarm before Walt and her go to bed. If the front door opens, it will set off the alarm. Dean says that he will turn it on when she leaves. May counters that the alarm panel in the bedroom will chirp and it will wake them. Dean says that Clara’s stereo will keep her awake anyway. Clara chimes in that she turned it down. May’s parting comment is “Just as long as Rory doesn’t stay late, okay Dean?” Dean answers in an exasperated voice – “Okay, Mom” May says “Okay”

Stage Direction: Dean’s door opens a crack, and we hear May walking away.

Dean says to Rory “We could go to a movie.”

Contrary to published reports on other sites - There is No Rory - Dean Kissing described in these sides.

Lane’s Apartment – Night 5 – Scene 33
Stage Description; The band is celebrating. It’s a total party atmosphere. The girls from the show, Cherry and Mira, are there flanking Zack on the couch. Brian sits near Zack, hoping to score the leftovers. Lane is in the kitchen opening a bag of chips into a bowl and watching Zack unhappily.

There is a lively banter between Zack and Brian with Cherry and Mira doing the Groupie Fawning thing. Cherry – “No one plays the guitar like you, Zack.” Mira – “You’re going to be so famous.” Cherry – “Will you remember us when you’re huge?” Ed. Note – DIRTY Zack tells them – “No” Zack asks who needs a refill and heads for the kitchen.

At the Kitchen – Zack ask Lane “Grab us a couple of beers, would ya?” Lane goes to the fridge to get the beers and comes back. Zack says “What are you doing in here. Come join the party.”

Lane turns to face him and declares: “I like you, Zack. I like you as more than a bandmate and more than a friend. I have liked you for some time now and I don’t think this feeling is going away. I thought you should know. Here’s your beer.”

Stage Direction: Lane hands a stunned Zack the beers, turns and heads into her bedroom. Zack stands there a beat, then shell-shocked, walks over to Brian and the girls. He hands the girls their beers.
The Side ends at this point.

General Spoilers

7/12/04

TV Guide:

ABC's I'm With Her had barely taken its last breath when Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino says she "swooped in like a vulture" and got leading man David Sutcliffe to return as Rory's father for seven episodes next season. Look for his character, Christopher, to muck up Luke and Lorelai's long-awaited romance. Hints Sherman-Palladino, "He's gonna be Complication Guy." Or, as we are likely to call him, That Jerk Who's Ruining Everything.

Hollywood Reporter:

Matt Czuchry has been added to the cast of the WB dramedy "Gilmore Girls" as a recurring, playing the new love interest of Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel). The project reunites the actor with the network and the studio after he co-starred in the WB/WBTV drama pilot "Dark Shadows" this past development season. Czuchry, whose credits include the feature "Eight Legged Freaks" and the CBS drama "Hack," is repped by ICM, 3 Arts Entertainment and attorney Jeff Bernstein.

Rory - Dean and Lorelai - Luke for 5.02 and 5.03

Rory - Dean - A New Approach for 5.02 and 5.03

A while back I wrote an essay based on the first 4 episodes that tied them together based on what we knew. That essay has since scrolled off the board in a retired thread. It can still be read in its entirety on Stars-Hollow.org in Miss Patty's Gossip Stoop under the same title Rory - Dean - A New Approach

The link is here: Rory - Dean - A New Approach

I won't repeat here what was written in the essay other than to say we got all the major things right for Episodes 5.01 and 5.02. The credit belong to all of the contributors: Holly Gilmore, gluglug, JennaRose, and ~Kitty. The mistakes and speculations are mine. The right answers belong to all of us.

These comments and the essay adds to and augments the information and spoilers that gluglug and I (Jet1945) have written and posted for all Season 5 episodes. They have been posted on Stars-Hollow.org, FF, and TWoP.

Continuing - 5.02 Messenger, Nothing More

""A Messenger, Nothing More"" (TV-PG) (HDTV)
ROME, REGRETS AND RENAISSANCE FAIRS -- Rory (Alexis Bledel) calls Lorelai (Lauren Graham) from Rome and admits that she made a mess of things with Dean (Jared Padalecki). Lorelai gives Dean a letter from Rory, but Dean's wife Lindsay (Arielle Kebble) finds the letter and throws Dean out of the house. Rory returns from Europe, and a terrible scene ensues when she and Lorelai run into Lindsay and her mother (guest star Tawny Rene Hamilton) on the street. Meanwhile, Luke (Scott Patterson) returns to Stars Hollow after many weeks helping his injured sister (guest star Kathleen Wilhoite) on the Renaissance Fair circuit. Luke and Lorelai try to find a private spot to say hello, but are interrupted by a town parade. Kelly Bishop, Melissa McCarthy, Keiko Agena, Yanic Truesdale and Liz Torres also star. Daniel Palladino wrote and directed the episode.

Lorelai is the Messenger, Nothing More.

The actual span of time between the end of episode 5.01 to the beginning of episode 5.03 is the entire summer. Episode 5.02 occurs during that span ending just before the start of 5.03.

Based on the published episode description, above, it now appears that after the end of 5.01 when Rory left for Europe, Lorelai worked at the Inn and Luke was On The Road helping Liz on the Renaissance Fair Circuit.

The timeline places Ep. 5.02 in late summer just before the start of school at Yale. We know this because:
Luke has been gone many weeks.
Lindsay throws Dean out of the house after she finds the Letter.
Dean moves home on Day 3 of 5.03, Rory meets him later that night.

In typical AS-P Gilmore Girls fashion a number of storylines run in parallel. The key point in tying things together is surprisingly Lindsay throwing Dean out of the house. From the Sides for Ep. 5.03 Dean moves home on Day 3.

Rory talking to Lorelai about her mess of things occurs while she is in Europe. Lorelai passes on the Letter to Dean that Rory has sent her.

Rory's letter to Dean probably tells him that they cannot be together because he is married to Lindsay and that the Finale Night tryst was a mistake. Perhaps by implication Rory means that they cannot be together unless or until Dean is divorced.

NOTE: Dean apparently did not tell Lindsay about Rory after Finale Night and he has been living at home with Lindsay during the summer.

Lindsay finds the letter Rory sent and confronts Dean and throws him out. This starts the timeline for Dean moving out.

ETA: Friends and readers have convinced me that I made a sequence error here. I have changed the paragraph accordingly.

At literally the same time Rory returns from Europe. When Lorelai and Rory are out walking through Stars-Hollow, probably to Luke's, they encounter Lindsay and her mom and the Confrontation happens. Lindsay had earlier given Dean the Ultimatum to move out. This is when Rory finds out that Dean is moving out and that Lindsay - Dean are separating. To recover from the confrontation, Lorelai suggests that they have the Movie Night where Rory and Lorelai can wallow and begin their real reunion.

See: Lorelai and Luke later - The parade happens later that same day

We don't have any specific information on the actual Confrontation. But we can make a reasonable assumption that Stars-Hollow will now know that Rory and Dean had an affair and that Lindsay has thrown Dean out of the house. We can also make the assumption that Lorelai will defend Rory based on what Rory has told her about not getting back with Dean while his is still married.

We don't know anything about anybody's Divorce Plans. Dean is till married in this episode.

Later, probably the next day (Friday) after the Confrontation Rory and Dean get together. We don't know who instigates it. But because Dean is separating from Lindsay, Rory thinks she is geting what she wants and restarts the Affair with Dean. They kiss and make up. We don't know if it goes further. Dean is not yet back at his parent's house.

Rory does not tell Lorelai she is back with Dean.

Episode 5.02 ends here which is probably during Friday Day and 5.03 picks up with the Friday Night Dinner at the Gilmore's in Hartford.

This ties together both Episodes. The combined timelines run in parallel at the end and in usual Gilmore Girls fashion are quirkily not exact.

[Extreme - Speculation - No Data at all] - What happens at the meeting at the end of 5.02 between Rory and Dean will define the benchmark for how Amy Sherman-Palladino intends to treat the character of Rory for the balance of the Season. If in the happiness of their "reconciliation" Rory limits the Affair and does not allow it to progress to another Finale night, then we can believe her when she says that she is going to wait until Dean is divorced. If however, Rory and Dean continue with the sexual side of the Affair, then it will be difficult to believe anything she says and to trust her in anyway. Now or in the future.

As a note: At this point in time - They have no safe haven. Dean has or is in the process of moving from his and Lindsay's apartment and Rory only has her bedroom at home. Maybe, perhaps...whatever, all the Rory - Dean in bed promo clips are not just from the Finale. [/Extreme Speculation]

One final thing and perhaps the most saddest of all. Rory does not and will not tell Lorelai that she and Dean are back together. She keeps it hidden from Lorelai. Lorelai, pre-occupied with the budding relationship with Luke, is oblivious to all of it. She does not pick-up on any of the clues.

For Lorelai - Luke

For those looking only for the Luke and Lorelai things - Luke gets back later in the episode. Maybe after the Confrontation. As described in the write-up they try to find a Private place but are interrupted by That Damn Band. Michel comes by with the Krumholtz kids in tow and he and Lorelai quiz each other on what they are doing there (Scene 28 of the Sides) . It is after this that Luke probably asks Lorelai out for the date that occurs in Ep. 5.03.

It is because of all of this that Lorelai is distracted and does not pick up on the fact that Rory and Dean have restarted their affair.

Piecing the Sides from the two episodes together we can come up with a probable Day-of the-week timeline. The parade and Confrontation in 5.02 occurs on Thursday. The plans for the Date are made for Saturday. Episode 5.02 ends here.

Episode 5.03 begins at Friday night dinner at the Gilmore's. From the 5.03 Sides the Date is the next day on Saturday.

What is written in the 5.03 Spoilers and the Rory - Dean essay for Episode 5.03 remains solid. We don't have anything more about it.

~Kitty 09-11-2004 06:59 AM

That is a great timeline. I think you have it down pretty good. :)

I can really see that happening.

bybrandy 09-11-2004 07:01 AM

I think you have the Luke/Lorelai parade moment in the wrong spot though. Isn't Lorelai wearing the same clothing at movie night as she is on parade day? That would indicate it is the same day, before movie night?? Or after if movie night is really a movie morning.

Not a big plot point or anything, I'm just saying.

~Kitty 09-11-2004 07:10 AM

hmmm.. I think the movie night is at the end of ep.2

Though, according to the sides, it's not if it's the same day as the parade.. according to Lorelai's clothes. Although, we aren't totally sure.. that could be a different outfit.. just both orange.. though it would be strange. And the necklace? Who puts it on at night unless they go out?

I still like the timeline. I think it's pretty close to what happens. :)

It's making more sense of where the story is going. I can see where things may be leading.. almost predictable to what is going to happen next.

And I never thought about that as Lorelai being he messenger. She probably says that, that she's a messenger, nothing more.

Okay - Good Point. It would fit if the Parade were on Thursday - Movie Night is Thursday night and the Confrontation still occurs on Friday.

This would allow more time for the Confrontation and the Rory - Dean restart scenes before leaving for Hartford and the Friday Dinner starting 5.03. It fits better that way.

However - If you just look at the sequence of events. I think it is pretty darn good. It is always difficult tying things to specific times or days

The key is that at or slightly after the Parade is when Luke asks Lorelai for the Date. From the 5.03 Sides, we know the Date occurs on Saturday Night.

Thanks for pointing that out

~Kitty 09-11-2004 07:20 AM

I think that is what happens with the parade and Luke asking Lorelai out ..at the end of ep2.. which makes ep.3 making more sense in the timeline of things. :)

So this would be there 'first date' since they haven't had a chance to be together all summer. There chance to be alone and talk about things.

spiced 09-11-2004 07:27 AM

uh someone asked me a question in the last thread about l&l in the premiere and i honestly read the script so long ago i don't recall if they speak - so that should tell you that if they do talk in person that it's not too much. but again, i really don't remember

Ok, this so totally has nothing to do with anything you guys are talking about, although I must say, good timeline Jim! ;)
But has anyone else noticed that the banner for the parade says "Opening Day"... Wonder what is opening, like what is a Cider Mill exactly? Not that it matters. Just wondering.
