I don't think that was what they were trying to do. I think it was supposed to indicate how Luke was feeling. He had just seen Lorelai's wedding ring so he was feeling kind of down. That he could never have Lorelai and that she ended up with the rich, charming guy. It was sort of another twisting of the knife that he had lost Lorelai.

It was DR being simplistic and unsubtle I think. Symbolically, that scene was supposed to portray Luke as George (Jimmy Stewart), and Chris as Dexter (Cary Grant - the ex who came in to save the day). DR showed that part so Luke (& us, because we hadn't already figured it out) could reflect what had happened in his own life.

In a twisted parallel, or personality flip, though - her fiance George/Luke is really more like Chris - newly wealthy, worships her, like to splash his money around, her family thinks he's swell. And Dexter/Chris, the ex, is really more like Luke - a regular Joe.

I don't think we were meant to compare the characters though, just the situation - delivered in DR's characteristic unsubtle way. Hitting us over the head, showing a bride with a cancelled wedding, and an ex who steps in and marries her.

That's how I saw it anyway. There are similarities, but it's not literal.

IA lilmelodie. I don't think it's anything deeper that Luke realizing that he lost Lorelai to the guy who wanted to marry her.

And while I 'm sure he was aware it wasn't a "tv show", I don't think he was familiar with the movie other than it was one of those "old movies Lorelai watched".

The podcast is up really early. From the description it sounds like a year in review show so we might not get anything new on Gilmore Girls.

ETA:
The only thing on GG so far is that Ausiello is disappointed that Amy left.

Thanks!
Maybe Ausiello is really disappointed, but I'm not!
And I can't believe, that she didn't watch GG's 7th season! I think, she lied in the last interview!

Another mention of Amy by Ausiello. He's looking forward to her new sitcom. He's just an Amy fan boy.

ETA: Angel hated Milo's role in Rocky. She thought he was badly written and was just a punk kid.

It's funny how many people will blame DR, but not blame Amy. I mean, she started the ball rolling with April (as much as I love her). And I doubt I'll watch her new sitcom.

i agree with you teamluke, Amy started the plot with April, heck she even start the whole L/L relationship collapse. i thinl DR is doing the best he can with what the Palladinos left him to work with. i'm excited to see the second half of the season.

And in all honesty he could have done something worse. I know at this point, we're not seenig a lot of storylines we'd like to, but it could have been WORSE, let's just imagine that. We could have seen Lorelai elope with Luke, only to hold the secret that she slept with Christopher--- and to have that crashing down on them. Which means even if LL were together, we'd know it was crap. And I'm sure DR could give Rory less of a storyline. I'm sure it's possible.

Not quite sure why Lane is pregnant. anyway

In the end of 7.08 he saw the movie "The Philadelphia Story" at the hospital.
We could see that this movie let him think about Lorelai.
Now both are in the hospital, Lorelai for her father and Luke?, what is if Luke is thinking about this movie( for what reason ever, maybe there is a situation that let him think about this movie) and he'll say that he would rather be in Philadelphia than here at the hospital.
Lorelai would look at him a little bit confused with a big ? on her face and Luke will say it's because of the movie.
What movie? Lorelai ask
The Philadelphia Story, Luke answered
and they split.
Than we'll see Lorelai at the video store to check out the story behind the movie "The Philadelphia Story" and she'll know what Luke was saying.
Nice spec, I like it

What is they had seen the movie on a movie night at the CS, giving it even more meaning to them?

TV GUIDE PODCAST DECEMBER 22, 2006

DM = Daniel Manu
MA = Michael Ausiello
AC = Angel Cohn
MMcD = Maitland McDonagh

START 24.14

MA: I was disappointed that Amy left Gilmore Girls.
DM: That’s true.
MA: That was a big disappointment.
DM: Well, I can believe that, but you were not disappointed by the season of Gilmore Girls that followed, though.
MA: Uhm, not initially, I mean I’m not overwhelmed—
DM: Really?
MA: With excitement about this season. I don’t think it’s a great season, I ---
DM: Because you kept saying, you know, there’s no difference between this season and the infamous writing, so if Amy was writing it, you’d still be disappointed in her, right?
MA: If Amy was wri--- yeah, I mean, I’m not --- the thing about with what Dave is doing is, he’s, the show still feels like Gilmore Girls to me, but then that isn’t necessarily always a great thing, because last year, it felt like Gilmore Girls but the plots and the stories kinda sucked.
DM: Right.
MA: So I’m not crazy about some of the things they are doing this year, but I’m pleasantly surprised that it’s as good as it is.
AC: I mean, I kinda have the entire CW network on my list that disappointed me this year.
DM: Oh no, what else disappointed you on CW?
AC: No, I just like, I love Veronica, but it wasn’t as good as it has been, I love Gilmore, but wasn’t as good as it has been. […]

END 25.10

and

START 46.53
[it’s about what the podcast people are looking forward to for next year]
AC: What about Michael’s list? Cuz mine is long.
DM: Okay, Mike, go ahead.
MA: Oh jeez. Uh, I’m looking forward to Amy Palladino’s new comedy […]

END 47.01

and

START 51.37

DM: And how’s Milo Ventimiglia in it?
MMcD: You know, it’s a terrible---
AC: They show his bangs.
MMcD: His bangs are there, and uh, doesn’t spend as much time brushing them out-- off as he does on Heroes. His part is really badly written and he is not able to transcend it; he just comes of as a whiny little punk, frankly, you know. It’s like [whiny]’ehhh, my father is famous, ehhhh[/whiny]
AC: It’s Jess!
DM: Anyway.
MMcD: Anyway.
AC: His character on Gilmore Girls is very whiny.

END 52.00

Errare humanum est.

Reading this I'm thinking the same, I have never seen the movie and I'd be a large number of people would not have a clue about it.

Thanks sot the podcast info, it's not up in iTunes yet but if it's just a review (not a shock there) then I'll wait.

I'm still on the "ASP started this but DSR could have stopped it" bandwagon, but as you say teamluke. it could have been worse but it also could have been much better.

ETA - thanks lorelaisgirl for the podcast TS.

ETA 2 - I have the podcast and going by iTunes it was released last week Dec 15?

The date in the title was the 21st but the date column in itunes was the 15th. I've been checking iTunes every day and it wasn't available there until today. It's possible that they recorded it last week and posted it today.
