McQueen) are surprised by a visit from their uncle, John Gilbert (guest star Anders). Alaric (Matt Davis) has an awkward talk with Elena about Isobel. At a Founder’s Day event, Stefan displays a rare party attitude and Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) attempt to find out why Uncle John has returned to town takes an ugly turn. An incident at the party causes trouble between Matt (Zach Roerig) and Tyler (Michael Trevino)... and the relationship between Matt and his mother, Kelly (guest star Melinda Clarke), reaches a new low. Meanwhile, Elena’s effort to comfort Jeremy falls short and he decides to take matters into his own hands. Sara Canning also stars. Casting News
Just as she did on ‘Angel,’ Gina Torres is once again rubbing shoulders with bloodsuckers and dabbling in supernatural such-and-such - only this time she is doing it with a role on The CW’s ‘The Vampire Diaries.’ Sources tell me that Torres will guest star on the freshman drama’s 10th episode as Bree, a “past” associate of Damon’s. Being a bit of a witch, Bree possibly holds the key to the more sinister Salvatore brother acquiring something he desperately wants – access to a tomb.

Here’s proof that the TV biz hasn’t completely closed up shop for the holidays: L Word and 24 alum Mia Kirshner has just inked a deal to join the cast of The Vampire Diairies on a recurring basis, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Kirshner will be playing the role of Isobel, the sweet-yet-dangerous wife of Matt Davis’ history teacher, Alaric. Through the magic of reshoots, the actress will debut in Jan. 21 episode, the first one back after the break.

'Vampire Diaries' exclusive: David Anders cries uncle!
24’s loss is The Vampire Diaries‘ gain!

David Anders, who (spoiler alert) permanently clocked out of 24 last night, has rebounded with a multi-episode arc on The CW smash, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The Alias and Heroes alum will play Elena and Jeremy’s uncle, Jonathan Gilbert, who comes to Mystic Falls to “cause some trouble,” teases an insider.

If that name sounds familiar, it’s because, well, it should. Johnathan Gilbert (yes, that’s with an “h”) is the name of Elena and Jeremy’s circa-1800 ancestor. Old school Johnathan debuted via flashback earlier this month as played by Joe Knezevich.

Look for Anders’ present-day Jonathan to turn up in April.

Melinda Clarke’s upcoming Vampire Diaries arc just got a whole lot juicier.
Executive producer Kevin Williamson tells me that Matt’s trashtastic mother, Kelly, will blow into Mystic Falls and waste no time digging her cougar claws into Ian Somerhalder’s Damon.

“If I didn’t have Kelly and Damon hook up there would be no God,” declares Williamson with a laugh. “What’s the point of doing TV if you’re not going to put those two characters together? That’s going to be a fun relationship to explore.”

Of course, Williamson points out that Kelly Donovan has more to offer than a reputation as a bad mom and a healthy appetite for vampire sex. Clarke’s character also shares a rich history with the town’s adult population. “We’ll reveal that she was friends with Sheriff [Elizabeth] and Elena’s mother,” he says. “The three of them were really tight friends back in the day. Sheriff and Kelly, in particular, have ongoing issues to deal with.”

DVR alert: Clarke’s Vampire Diaries debut is slated for not soon enough March 25.

Spoilers:

Question: Is anything ever going to happen between Elena and Damon on The Vampire Diaries? —Cupid

Ausiello: Patience, Cupid. And lots of it! “This show is cemented in a love triangle over the whole run of the series,” notes exec producer Julie Plec, “and right now we’re very much embedded in the pure love [of] Stefan and Elena.” So not even a kiss? Yes, Plec teases, but “probably beyond season 1.” Adds boss man Kevin Williamson: “This show is always going to be about Stefan and Elena. It has to be. They’re soul mates.”

Tamra in Washington, D.C.: Any development in the Damon-Elena-Stefan triangle on Vampire Diaries?
Seriously, will those angsty three ever be happy? Not any time soon, and as Ian Somerhalder puts it, Elena may start leaning towards a different Salvatore brother. "Damon's very truthful when he speaks. Even when he's a deviant bastard, he's still telling the truth," he explains. "Elena feels that she's been lied to by Stefan. [But] in Stefan's defense, he essentially had to lie to her to protect her."

Maureen in Tacoma, Wash.: Any truth to the rumors that werewolves might be heading to The Vampire Diaries?
Well, werewolves are the new trend, you know, but The Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley tells us this: "I know that in the books that happens, but it hasn't been confirmed—it's been insinuated." But if Paul has his say—which we're guessing he will—he's totally on board. "It'd be fantastic. And I played a wolf on a series called Wolf Lake, which was a very short-lived show on CBS, so I love the idea of it because I've done it."

Question: Do you know when Elena will turn to into a vampire on The Vampire Diaries? I am dying to know. —Crystal

Ausiello: If you’re holding your breath for it to happen, you actually might die. Elena’s conversion, says exec producer Julie Plec, “is a fundamental part of the books — it’s, in fact, most of the books. So it’s not something we are going to ignore. But right now it’s a little too Twilight similar for us to feel comfortable dabbling in it.” Beyond concerns about Elena being written off as a small-screen Bella, “the best thing about her is, she’s a non-genre, non-supernatural, true-blue ingénue,” says Plec, “and we don’t really want to mess with that. She’s the relatable character. To pervert that too soon would be a mistake.”

Monica: Damon and Stefan for the win! Any scoop on Vampire Diaries?
Sorry, but I only have some good news for you Damon-Elena shippers: Stefan may get a taste of human blood again soon, which may change his personality a bit, and I can't imagine that goes over well with good girl Elena. Katherine, on the other hand, would love it, right? Also, you'll never guess whose body is going to be found? Vicki! So this means that (a) she really is dead and not coming back as boss Kevin Williamson told us and (b) Jeremy is so gonna find everything out, right? That has to be where all this is heading, given that he's realizing that there are vampires in Mystic Falls. The only question is: What will Damon do when he is found out? Shudder.

Question: Any Vampire Diaries scoop? I really loved the Damon and Elena interaction we got. Will we get more? —Jezz
Ausiello: Indeed you will. “Damon is obsessed with Elena’s doppelganger, and if one day Elena’s doppelganger is not in the picture, it’s an immediate transference,” explains exec producer Julie Plec. “We’ll see him have an evolution of feelings for her. And, over time, we’ll see her wonder if there’s something redeemable about this guy.”

Vampire Diaries Scoop
“There will always be conflict. That's just the nature of the story,” said Wesley of his on-screen relationship with Elena (Nina Dobrev). “Her mortality is a huge thing. What if she wants to turn? But for now they're going to [be] a little less sort of serious and more like, ‘Let’s be a normal couple. Let's laugh and do stuff that normal humans do.’”
(...)
And according to Somerhalder, just because the tomb may be closed on Katherine, doesn’t mean the book is shut on her in the TV series. “I don't think [he’ll be able to let go of her.]. It's just couldn't be that simple.”
(...)
“Damon having idle time, not having a mission, is a very, very problematic situation…I think there are more shenanigans [to come].” And when Damon is up to no good, his Salvatore brother is sure to follow.

Question: I am dying here without Vampire Diaries! Please give us some scoop on the Damon-Elena relationship because I am loving it! —Ash
Ausiello: Then prepare to love this season’s final string of episodes, which exec producer Julie Plec tells me will be heavily focused on the pair. “We’ll see Damon start to look at Elena as more than just his brother’s girlfriend or the doppelganger to the love of his life,” she reveals. “He’ll start to love and understand her as a human being, which is ironic because Damon could typically give a s–t about anything involving humanity. It’s some good stuff.”

Question: How does Damon cope with the news that Katherine was never in the tomb on The Vampire Diaries? —Christine
Ausiello: “Damon spends most of episode 14 and a good portion of 15 drunk,” reveals exec producer Julie Plec. “Watching him sort of spiral into the abyss of self pity is kind of hilarious.”

On The Vampire Diaries, are we going to find out that Alaric's wife is a vampire? — Mirabel
MICKEY: Interesting theory, M! We've already seen a particularly bloody flashback in which Isobel is attacked by a familiar-looking vampire. Get ready to learn more about her interactions with bloodsuckers. It's no accident that Alaric is teaching in Mystic Falls, but is his assumption that Isobel is dead correct? This is a good question to ask. Related question: Does Bonnie's college-aged cousin have any supernatural secrets of her own?

All three of Jerry’s exes pop up in Melinda’s first episode, titled “A Few Good Men,” in which Sheriff Forbes asks Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to participate in a bachelor auction officiated by Mrs. Lockwood. Beyond that, executive producer Julie Plec says that Matt’s mess of a mom will interfere in his relationship with Caroline, while Caroline’s mother will reveal to Damon why Alaric Saltzman really came to town. As for Tyler’s cougar mom, she’ll cope with her husband’s infidelity by trying to sink her claws into Damon.

Let me ask this Vampire Diaries question directly: Who is Elena's mother? — Tanya
MICKEY: Wouldn't you like to know? So would Elena, which is why she looks up some of Mommie Dearest's old friends. But rather than welcome Elena and regale her with stories about the time they did body shots off the lifeguard in Rosarita, they turn out to be a wily, suspicious bunch, and they smell the vervain on Elena a mile away.

Question: Does The Vampire Diaries have plans to resurrect Vicki? I’m hearing conflicting things. —George
Ausiello: The truth is right here: “We are not averse to bringing people back from the dead,” says exec producer Julie Plec, “but we would not do it with the first tragic death out of the gate. In the future, we absolutely will use those mystic tricks, but not with Vicki — as much as we loved Kayla [Ewell]. It would ruin the impact.”

Question: Enough of The Vampire Diaries. Got any scoop on True Blood that can hold me over till June? —Brittany
Ausiello: More Vampire Diaries scoop it is! Exec producer Kevin Williamson teases that the season is “building to the Founder’s Day Celebration. That will be our last episode of the season. We will bring that historical storyline somewhat to a close and at the same time, we will start the next chapter. We will involve some of the town council and we will also take it to the next level.”
Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Smallville,' 'Good Wife,' 'Glee,' 'Grey's,' Fringe,' and more! | Ausiello | EW.com

TVGuide.com: How will the love triangle between Stefan (Paul Wesley), Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) evolve in these next episodes?
Williamson: One of the most important things Julie and I wanted to do this season is cement the love between Stefan and Elena. It's that love story that will be the anchor of this entire show. We have to earn that.

TVGuide.com: All signs point to Alaric's wife, Isobel (Mia Kirshner), being Elena's mother. When will we learn more about that?
Plec: The signals are pointing very much in that direction.
Williamson: In regards to what happens, there's still a few surprises with all of that.
Plec: The next episode is very much about Elena's search to try to get to the bottom of who this woman is and how, if at all, she connects to Alaric.

TVGuide.com: We'll soon be meeting Jonathan Gilbert. How does he come into play?
Williamson: Uncle John [David Anders] comes to town for one reason and then you slowly start to realize he could be there for another. He has a hidden agenda, just like everyone else in town.
Plec: He's stepping in to fill the shoes on the Founders' Council, with there being a lack of Gilberts representing the founding families. Uncle John gets in there to stir things up.
Williamson: One of the surprises is that he shows up, interestingly enough, just after that tomb is opened. How convenient.

TVGuide.com: Was he in the tomb?
Williamson: Maybe...not.
Plec: Oh, gosh no. [Laughs]

TVGuide.com: The tomb is still open, isn't it?
Plec: Yes, and there's some good that comes out of there and there's some very, very, very bad that comes out of there.
Williamson: And there's some stuff that launches us into a whole new story line.

TVGuide.com: Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is starting to figure out that there are vampires. Will that put him in danger?
Plec: Jeremy has seen too much. We're exploring how he starts to dig a little bit deeper and put the pieces together of what exactly vampires are and if they're real. Is this pretty girl that he kissed in the woods, who we saw little veiny eyes on, is she one? The vampire has a crazy allure, as we've seen between Elena and Stefan, so is he going to fall for her or have some feelings for one of his own?
Williamson: Or is he going to fall in the footsteps of the Gilberts that came before him?
Plec: Which are no friends of the vampire.

TVGuide.com: What should we expect in the season finale?
Plec: What we've been building to from the beginning — it's something we took directly from the books — is this event called the Founders' Day Celebration, which is the anniversary of the founding of the town. We're looking into big period costumes and Civil War reenactments and maybe some parade action with some big floats. It's going to be the big event that connects us back to 1864 and what went down back then. It messes things up so when we come back in Season 2, everyone has a reason to tune in again. There are nine "oh my God" moments.

Maureen in Baker, Nev.: Waiting for a new episode of Vampire Diaries is the worst. Can you help me pass the time with some scoop?
We're about to become very familiar with a creepy new vampire, says show runner Julie Plec. "We'll meet Harper, the character coming out of the tomb in the last episode that aired, and follow him on his journey as he sets up shop in Mystic Falls and who he sets up shop with." As for Damon and Stefan, Kevin Williamson says, "They're going to find some common ground and build from there." Unfortunately, their distressed brotherhood won't work itself out overnight. But they've got time, right? They're vampires!

Jackie in Seattle: I love that David Anders just jumps from one of my favorite shows to the next. What do you know about his character on Vampire Diaries?
As always, David Anders brings the bad. "He surfaces when it comes time to sell [Jeremy and Elena's] dad's doctor's office, but he's [really] there because he wants something and he'll fight to the finish to get it," says Kevin. And speaking of Jeremy, tough times are ahead for the brainwashed brother as he continues to unravel the truth about vamps in Mystic Falls. "Jeremy's storyline is a big storyline and takes him to a really dark place," Julie tells me. David's character will also serve as a guide on Jeremy's journey.

Confessions of a 'Vampire Diaries' insider
Here at Tube Talk, we don't just limit ourselves to mingling with the cast of our favourite shows. Oh no! We're also not averse to hanging out with those behind the scenes. Enter Jennifer Bryan, costume designer - and friend to the stars - for The Vampire Diaries, who we caught up with to get some teasers on the rest of the season. She's not all bonnets and scarves, you know - read on for some juicy spoilers!

Who is your favourite character to dress for?
"Oh my gosh - that's like asking who is my favourite child! That's tough, it really is. It really depends on the episode. Sometimes it's Elena... I really like doing the 1864 period characters - those are great and very interesting. I like to do Bonnie because she's the funky one out of the three main girls."

How much do you know about future storylines?
"Right now I'm prepping episode 18 which takes us back to 1864 and there's some very interesting things developing... I have to be kept in the loop because we're shooting three or four episodes ahead of what's aired. They don't give me too much information though - sometimes I get surprised!"

You had Melinda Clarke on recently. What was it like working with her?
"She was a ton of fun! She's the cheeky mum who's a bit of a cougar. We were thrilled to have her on the show because it adds a new dimension. She comes home after neglecting her kids and tries to make amends, but she doesn't do a very good job."

Is there a chance we'll see her again at a later date?
"Yes, we will. We will definitely see her."

Can we expect more new characters to be introduced?
"Oh yes - I can share with you the parents of the Gilberts in the present day. Plus Jeremy and Elena's uncle. He's loaded with information."

Are the flashbacks going to become more and more prominent?
"Yes they are and they're really stretching them out - you will start to see more of a connection between present day and flashbacks. There is a lot of crossover in the storyline. I can't tell you any more though - I've probably given you too much already!"

Where does Elena's story take her as the season progresses?
"I think you're going to get me in hot water for giving all this information! There is going to be a melding of Katherine and Elena - you can see it. How it's going to take place, I don't know. Does Katherine come to the future or does Elena go to the past? I would like to see Katherine come to the future to see how a woman with cunning 1860s sensibility deals with life in this century."

In terms of the love triangle that has been building, who do you think Elena is best suited to?
"I think she's suited to Stefan, but I think Damon is probably going to take a bit of a second look at her - a bit of brother envy. Eventually, if he stops being so myopic about his quest for Katherine, he might take a gander at Elena..."

Do you know anything about the season finale?
"No - are you kidding me?! It hasn't even been written yet! I think the writers have a rough idea of how they want it to end, but I know it has not been written yet. I swear it's the truth - it's witnessed by the late scripts that I get!"

On the Hunt
Q. What can you tell us about your character Jonathan Gilbert and about his back story, both the back story you were provided and the one you created? Did you watch the show at all to get a feel for it?

A. He is Elena and Jeremy's uncle and I've been having a lot of stuff with Damon, Ian Somerhalder's character, and my character is not at all afraid of Damon. We find ourselves in a bunch of pissing contests going toe to toe. My character proves to be a good foe for Damon.

I watched one episode of the show the night before I flew out here. I watched one episode to get the feel of the show and get a little back story going. They offered the part to me and I really had no idea about the character. I accepted the part without really knowing anything about it, I was like, "Well that sounds like fun!" Ian Somerhalder and I were going to do a movie together last year and it ended up losing funding. I was friends with him and thought it would be a fun time, and it is, it's proved to be just that. I have been having a blast, they are a great group of people.

Q. Executive producer Julie Plec has said your character will further complicate matters, can you tell us a bit more about your characters relationship with Damon?

A. Just like his great grandfather, the original Jonathan Gilbert in 1864, he knows far too much about vampires, more than he should know about vampires. So I'm a know-it-all and I hold the information that I have over Damon and Stefan's heads threatening to expose them in Mystic Falls if they don't play ball with me. There is a lot more than that which I can't really go into.

Q. Since your character is a vampire hunter, what is his relationship with the current in-house vampire hunter played Alaric by Matt Davis?

A. Matt is kind of aligned with the vampires, with Damon and Stefan, whereas I am not aligned. That's another good te-ta-tet we have cooking up too between me and Alaric. There is plenty of opportunity for duels.

The Vampire Diaries Bosses Spill on Damon, Elena and the Craziness Ahead

Executive Producer Julie Plec reminds us that there are far greater things to worry about than Damon's poor wittle bwoken heawt. "The biggest thing that happens when the show comes back is that the tomb didn't necessarily close," she says. "The vampires coming out of the tomb, that's a big deal. That's a problem for our poor little good vampires in Mystic Falls.["
(...)
He's pretty much drunk for a couple episodes. Then he starts to realize that he may not have Katherine, but there's Elena kind of in the picture and watching him look at her in a different way, not under the lens of 'she looks like the woman I love,' but 'the woman I love doesn't give a crap about me and here's this girl that I'm building this friendship with.' "

Still, before you Damon-Elena shippers get too excited, Julie adds: "They go through some ups and downs. He's done some nasty stuff that she finds out coming up. She finds out something that he did that is not forgivable in any way, and it really puts a divide between them."
(...)
The question remains, what kind of woman would stand up Ian for 145 years, hiding out (presumably) in Chicago? "One of the things we will reveal is the why," Kevin says. "And it's a little interesting. It's a little diabolical. Katherine is Katherine. Katherine is a beast. She is a fickle little narcissist, and she gets what she wants. And she can have anything that she wants. And the idea that having a hot guy like that pining away for her for 145 years just can soothe an ego so well I'm sure on a rainy night."

Sounds like match made in heaven...or that other place a little farther south.

Being a fan of Wolf Lake, I think Paul plays bad boys best. Not to say he isn't doing a good job now.

Has anyone posted this? I am i psychic then? I was just saying we needed a character like hers

There’s a new hottie in Mystic Falls, and it looks like she will be competition for Elena - literally. Spencer Locke will be brought in to play Amber Bradley, “a girl who enters a beauty pageant along with Elena and Caroline.” Even money says this pageant is yet another Mystic Falls fundraiser.

No word yet on whether this will be a recurring role, or what kind of evil she might bring to the town. Maybe she’s a succubus - we haven’t had one of those yet. While most of Locke’s credits include Nickelodeon shows, she was last seen in Resident Evil: Extinction as a character named K-Mart (she was found in the rubble of a K-Mart), so I think it evens out. Locke will also appear in the upcoming Resident Evil: Afterlife.

Sorry if you've already discussed this but I just had to say this somewhere where I won't get in trouble ... I think they may have hinted at who is going to die in 1x15....

Matt: "I'm not going anywhere."

From my experience on shows, saying THOSE words to anyone is the kiss of DEATH. I could be wrong of course but it seemed pretty foreshadow-y to me.

If it is true, poor Matt!! How could they kill him??
