Chicago PD Scoop: A Costly Mistake Tests Upton’s Limits in “Still Water”

Chicago P.D.’s first post-Olympics episode keeps things tight with a single but compelling storyline this coming Feb. 23. Titled “Still Water” the Upton-centric hour sees Hailey (Tracy Spiridakos) contemplating her career after 10 years on the job. While Platt (Amy Morton) urges her to throw a party to celebrate the milestone, we see a reluctant Hailey take to the streets for a run on a cold winter’s night instead — to “build tolerance” in Upton’s own words.

However, when Upton is witness to a car crash that sees a young couple’s car go over a bridge and into the freezing water, she is called upon to use all of her resilience to brave the icy depths in order to save the car’s occupants.

Alone and battling hypothermia in the water, Upton is faced with an impossible — and seemingly heartbreaking — choice about who to save and who to let go, when she acknowledges she cannot rescue both crash victims.

However, the consequences of her choice will quickly come to haunt the young detective when she realises she may have made a terrible error in judgement.

The hour will also see a little more on Platt and Upton’s history as Platt reveals the unpleasant details behind the case that first prompted Hailey to join the force.

Meanwhile, determined to right her wrong, an emotional but driven Upton will find herself challenged to place good detective work above a dark desire for just desserts in the final moment that ironically places her and the crash victim back in the same watery predicament.

The “Still Water” episode of Chicago P.D. airs Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 10 p.m. (ET/PT) on NBC.

There's also a TVLine article but it's just clickbait, nothing that we haven't already known for weeks, just this time paired with the stills that everywhere else has.

‘Chicago P.D’ 9×13 Advance Review: “Still Water”

Chicago P.D. 9×13 “Still Water” is a great episode for fans of Tracy Spiridakos, who remains a powerhouse of an actor, capable of delivering emotion with just a look or a gesture in ways only great performers can. But it’s also a great episode for fans of symmetry, and cases that feel like they come full circle, and not just for the people involved, but for our series regulars.

It’s hard to talk about the episode without discussing the heavy lifting Spiridakos does in this hour — the type of emotional work she must be commended for. The truth is, this cast is particularly good at taking character-centric episodes and making us feel things, which is, perhaps, why we’ve been stuck with character-centric episodes for so long. It is not my preferred storytelling method, but it is true that this season has given Spiridakos, Soffer, Squerciati, Flueger and Hawkins a chance to prove their acting chops, and as a fan of this cast, that will always be appreciated.

Here are some teases for Chicago P.D. 9×13 “Still Water”:
  • Spiridakos is magnetic in this episode, but this is a much different performance from the one she gave in the fourth episode of this season, “In the Dark,” arguably another tremendous performance. That’s the mark of a good actor, to be convincing while portraying different kinds of emotions.
  • If this episode proves anything, is that we need so much more of Trudy Platt. Can we get a Trudy-centric episode too?
  • Funniest moment involves two characters responding to a question in unison.
  • Overall, this episode takes some solid steps towards a more balanced show, and it’s amazing to see.
  • The continuity issues, however, are frustrating and truly unnecessary. Sometimes, it only takes one or two lines.
  • Chicago P.D. is at its best not when it plays with morality, but when it does so in a way that requires choices. Not spur-of-the-moment or emotional ones, but calculated choices.
  • The last frame of this episode made me a little emotional. We’ve come a long way.
  • One of my favorite scenes in the episode happens in the locker room.
  • A few dynamics that don’t typically receive too much screen time get a chance to shine this episode.
  • This is predominantly a Hailey episode, not an Upstead episode. But Hailey’s got a husband, and he’s got her back.
  • He’s not the only one who does, and that might just be my favorite thing.

BEST-BETS FOR FEB. 23: PROPULSIVE “P.D.,” AMIABLE “ALIEN”

“Chicago P.D.,” 10 p.m., NBC. This is easily the best of the three “Chicago” series, as shown tonight. After a bland “Chicago Fire” at 9 p.m., we get this taut hour. It starts with Haily Upton (Tracy Spiradakos, shown here) on a nighttime run. A crisis leads to a stunning opening; then the propulsive story streaks toward its emotional finish. There’s strong writing and visuals, plus great work from Spiradakos.

‘Chicago P.D.’: Tracy Spiridakos Previews Upton’s ‘Intense’ Underwater Rescue

Tracy Spiridakos spent a lot of time underwater for the February 23 episode of Chicago P.D.

In “Still Water,” Detective Hailey Upton is out for a jog when she witnesses a horrible car crash and risks her own life to save the passengers. “I feel like everyone in the unit would probably have a similar response to jump in truthfully,” Spiridakos tells TV Insider. “Selfishly, I’m happy that it was me ’cause it was a lot of fun. It was a really cool episode.”

And when she says “jump in,” she means it: Upton jumps into the river to try to save whoever’s in the car. As you can tell from the photos above and the behind-the-scenes video below, it’s night, it’s Chicago, and it’s freezing. In other words, it looks brutal.

“It was definitely intense,” Spiridakos says. “The jumping into the river, truthfully, was not me. It was my stunt double Kelli [Victoria Scarangello] who jumped in, and she’s amazing. There’s a couple different water sequences: There’s the going into the river, there’s the going under, which is the tank that we shot when we were in Los Angeles, [and] there was another pond portion of it where we were coming up out of the river.”

She continues, “They were challenging, but really cool at the same time. I think the L.A. portion of it was really amazing just getting to see this giant tank with this car submerged. The stunt team that was there was incredible, just made me feel super comfortable, and we played in the water for two days straight.”

With that time, “I got really used to opening my eyes underwater, which I am not good at and kept opening my eyes and then inhaling ’cause you open your eyes and then there’s the stinging that happens,” she admits. “It was a process, let’s just say.”

But there’s more to the car crash than Upton originally knows, and Intelligence must track down the man responsible. “We find out a little bit more about the victims in the car and it takes the whole team coming together and trying to solve how the accident happened,” Spiridakos previews.
