The Lottery S&S #1 "The Next Endangered Species is Us"

THE LOTTERY

LIFETIME'S NEW DRAMA THE LOTTERY PREMIERES JULY 20

Lifetime brings viewers to the year 2025 with the premiere of the provocative new conspiracy thriller, The Lottery. The series stars Marley Shelton (Eleventh Hour), Michael Graziadei (American Horror Story), David Alpay (The Vampire Diaries), Athena Karkanis (Low Winter Sun), Yul Vazquez (Magic City), Shelley Conn (Terra Nova) and Martin Donovan (Homeland).

Set within a dystopian future driven by a global fertility crisis, The Lottery reveals a world staring down the barrel of impending extinction as women have mysteriously stopped bearing children. After years of research, Dr. Alison Lennon (Shelton) and her team remarkably fertilize 100 eggs. However, her victory is short-lived when the Director of the Department of Humanity, Darius Hayes (Donovan), takes government control of the lab and informs the President (Vazquez) of the monumental scientific breakthrough. To determine which women will carry the prized embryos to term, Chief of Staff Vanessa Keller (Karkanis) convinces the President to hold a national lottery and a battle over the control of the 100 embryos begins. Michael Graziadei stars as Kyle, a recovering alcoholic and single father of one of the last children born in the country, while David Alpay stars as James, Alison’s colleague and lab assistant. Shelley Conn portrays Gabrielle, the First Lady of the United States.

The Lottery is written by Timothy J. Sexton (Children of Men), who also serves as executive producer alongside Rick Eid (Hostages) and Dawn Olmstead (Prison Break). Danny Cannon (CSI) directed and executive produced the pilot, which is from Grady Girl Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television. Ten one-hour episodes have been ordered for this season.

It sounds really fascinating. Hopefully the pilot lives up to the trailer.

We'll see.

'The Lottery' review: Could be Lifetime's shot at something great - Newsday

Quote:
THE SHOW "The Lottery"

WHEN | WHERE Premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. on Lifetime

WHAT IT'S ABOUT Any minute now, the world's women stop having babies. Reasons unknown. By 10 years in, it's a full-blown crisis. An all-encompassing U.S. Fertility Commission winks at "bar beds" for conception attempts, compels mandatory fertility testing, and keeps a scary-close eye on those precious "last six" kids birthed in 2019.

If this dystopian future echoes the 2006 film "Children of Men," that's because Timothy J. Sexton wrote them both. But "The Lottery" is a TV series, affording more space to explore the crisis' human impact and its political gameplay.

Lifetime knows how to deliver the former. What about the latter? Politics fuels the conflict that keeps the drama tense. Government officials play both villain (Martin Donovan's wide-reaching fertility czar) and, seemingly, heroine. It's the president's chief of staff (Athena Karkanis, "Low Winter Sun") who envisions a lottery after a research lab finds a way to create 100 viable embryos: "Let every woman out there feel like she has the chance to hit the jackpot . . . a shot at something great."

Review: 'The Lottery' Is Lifetime's 'Teen Wolf'

USA – Monk, FX – The Shield, every network at some point in its run finds a show that sets it apart. A show that says, “believe it or not, we do take television seriously.” Usually, these surprise series from networks primarily known for second-hand content and reality programming. History had its awakening thanks to Hatfields & McCoys, AMC thanks to Mad Men, and now Lifetime can mark itself as one of the latest additions with its new fertility drama, The Lottery.

From Children of Men writer Timothy J. Sexton, The Lottery follows a world set in the near future where women have stopped procreating (this is the only similarity the series shares with the aforementioned Alfonso Cuarón film) for the last six years. Now, there are only six, six year olds left and the scientific community, along with the government, is in a panic to find a solution to the problem. This is where Dr. Alison Lennon comes in, a scientist who, along with her team, has managed to fertilize 100 embryos in their lab. However, when the doctor learns the embryos are going to be taken by the government rather than returned to the female donors for impregnation, she begins to question the motives of her employers.

No one’s going to consider The Lottery particularly “high class” drama. But from a pulpiness perspective on the level of similarly themed sci-fi drama, Orphan Black, the series can stand on its own. It has all the right elements – an intriguing premise, a decent set of actors, a solid look, decent writing – and given time, it could turn into a moderate hit among the crowd it’s shooting for. The real question is not whether or not The Lottery can find success with the Lifetime crowd, it’s whether or not it can find success outside of it. If it succeeds, this will be the first drama that really puts the network on the map, and with the help of a creative team that includes Gotham pilot director Danny Cannon, the odds seem to be in the series favor.

I thought Children of Men was an interesting movie. It will be interesting to see how the Lottery continues this world.

The Lottery Cancelled by Lifetime

It’s egg-xactly as Dr. Alison Lennon feared: Lifetime has cancelled The Lottery after just one season.

The sci-fi drama, which concluded its 10-episode run on Sept. 28, was set in a post-apocalyptic world where women suddenly found themselves unable to become pregnant.
