Bobby Appreciation Thread # 11 ~ Because He Deserves The Best

Okay, so he's sort of secret mystery guy.

Team Supergirl, I think that is a cool name.

Yeah, she'd definitely remember family unit, so that makes sense.

Who's a secret mystery guy?

So last night was the pseudo-terrorist episode.

Turns out it was just the city's rich science business guy who "testing" Supergirl and using some poor schmo to do his dirty work.

But, of course, bad guys are usually as awful as they are lame.

I'm really liking Supergirl, the girl I mean.

And we got to see that her uber-bitch of a boss actually has a lot of qualities to her.

For one thing, she absolutely treasures her son.

For another, she's super competent at what she does.

So, you know, if you're gonna be that high maintenance, the least you can do is be worth it.

The guy with the red eyes. That's who I called secret mystery guy.

Thanks for filling me in on that episode.

Yes, if you're going to be high maintenance, being pretty awesome of a character is a super added bonus.

Thanks for fixing the first post.

It's been so long since I've started a thread like this that I totally forgot the first post.

Ah, Hank is the mystery guy.

That's actually a fairly accurate description.

Like, I can't even tell if he's a good or a bad guy.

It's clear the show wants you to think he's a bad guy.

He's keeping secrets, especially why his eyes occasionally flash red, and he clearly blackmailed Daddy Danvers into working for the DEO back in the day.

But he's also helping the sisters, so it's obviously not a simple situation.

And Cat is obviously more complex than just being a bitchy boss, so that's good.

It makes the show better.

Thank you for the new thread, by the way.

I just imported the OP.

Only now it looks like I started the thread, but you and I both know the truth.

Okay, so I have to remember to be cautious about adoring Hank from the beginning. You know me, I love the bad guys, so I'd think he was definitely bad.

I like that you don't know if they're good or bad.

Or Hank anyway.

Like you said, complex characters make any show better.

It's also a good sign that they're complex from the beginning.

Well, he could have learned from blackmailing Daddy Danvers, and that's why he is helping the sisters.

You're welcome. I hadn't even noticed it changed who started the thread.

I don't even look there any more. It's always one of the 3 of us.

Hank isn't on the show very much so far.

He's not absent from it, mind you, but he's not on a lot.

Come to think of it, that's probably helping him be very mysterious.

The show has Kara at work at the media empire where she's Cat's lowly assistant, where Hank would obviously not be.

Then Kara fights crime/evil as Supergirl.

There, her help comes either from her sister Alex or her friends Wynn and James.

Hank is Alex's boss, so he's involved.

But he's in charge of the whole outfit, so he's not as directly involved as the others.

Yet.

The truth is we know that he forced Daddy Danvers into working for the DEO, but it's also clear that the Danvers had an adversarial relationship with the DEO at that point.

(Long story short, when Kara crashed to Earth, Superman placed her with the Danvers. The DEO wanted to take her, study her, etc. They put pressure on the Danvers to give her up and, instead of doing that, Daddy Danvers offered himself in exchange.)

But we also get all of that from the Danvers' perspective.

Who knows where Hank was coming from.

Plus, there's the whole glowing eyes thing.

If that happened after Daddy Danvers went to work for the DEO and died, then something's changed with/for Hank.

So, if he was good originally, he may be a little more evil now.

And vice versa.

I bet that does help his mystery.

It would also make me more interested in learning more, and being clued in a little at a time would be great.

They really do sound like a very diverse and well intertwined cast.

Is it new again Monday? Remind me it's on if it is.

And, before I forget, Unforgettable is on A&E tonight at 8pm and Midnight our time.

Yeah, Supergirl is new this Monday and the Monday after that.

Maybe even beyond that, but I can't see yet.

It's a good cast, I think.

If nothing else, it shows that you don't have to be superhero to be brave, strong or competent.

If anything, Supergirl herself is the one who's on a learning curve.

Sounds like she is kind of like Buffy, but not as stressful?

I was sound asleep before it came on Monday.

I have it written on my list now.

I like that she's learning and she's the one who is on a learning curve.

That means she's human and we're able to relate to her.

I've been so worried trying to keep Rosewood on my mind, I forgot all about Supergirl.

Kinda like Buffy but not as stressful is a very good way of describing Supergirl.

And she is constantly learning, as are pretty much everyone else on the show.

This week, it was a lot about getting in touch with your anger and using it the right way.

See, Kara's been watching her friend James be back in love with his ex, Lucy Lane.

And so she's been having all these emotions, so she snapped at her boss about her boss always being mean to her.

But, because Cat (Kara's boss) is awesome (if catty and kinda mean), she didn't fire Kara, but took her out for a couple of drinks where she explained to her that she needed to find out who she was really angry at and also find better uses for her anger because professional women can't afford to get angry at the office.

Kara, while talking with James about it, realized that she's mostly angry because she'll never get to feel normal.

Superman was a baby when he got to Earth, so the human world is normal to him, even if he has extra powers.

Kara was almost a teenager when her planet exploded.

So her life will never be normal because what is normal died at that point.

And, as a side plot, we got Lucy's dad bringing a military doodad to spar with Kara, at which point the military doodad turned into the episode's villain.

And, while he was in town, Lucy's dad also took every opportunity to throw shade at James, to the point of telling to his face that he'll never be good enough for Lucy.

Oh, and Wynn's been looking into Hank's connection with Daddy Danvers' death.

Turns out that Hank and Daddy Danvers went to South America to confront/fight an alien and they both went missing.

Then, a month later, Hank emerged with zero injuries and also zero memory of what happened.

I'm thinking that's when the flashing red eyes began.

Oh I wish I'd seen that one. Using anger constructively is something I'd love to get a clue on.

That's a good point-angry outbursts at work are definitely not helpful.

Oh, so she's kinda dealing with still being in that emotional place with normal, so she doesn't have a normal "normal".

Whoa! Really? It turned into a villain, or figuratively speaking?

Oh wow-sounds like a good use of Hank, yet again.

They made a story out of the past, and a past connection, and him having the eyes without or with, him realizing he has red eyes.

I will be watching Monday.

Well, what happened with the robot the army brought in to fight Supergirl was that there was a guy who built and controlled the robot, right?

So the first time Supergirl fought the robot, she won but she also "scared" the robot, which went into stealth mode and thus disappeared.

Paralleled to that, the head military guy (who is, of course, Lucy's mean dad) verbally humiliated the guy who created the robot and fired him.

So everything that happened after that was the guy controlling the robot.

But this is also Supergirl, so when Kara's sister Alex found that guy and killed him (there was a fight and he wound up dead, she didn't execute him or anything), the robot went sentient.

Meaning it didn't need anyone to control it.

And that's when Kara/Supergirl defeated it for good.

So it was both a figurative villain when it was being controlled and a full-on villain for the couple of minutes it was thinking on its own after its creator died.

See, what I'm thinking is that Hank is either the alien from the South American jungle, which means that alien killed Daddy Danvers and Hank and replaced the latter with himself.

Hence the red flashing eyes.

Or Hank is now some sort of hybrid as a result of that encounter.

Hence the red flashing eyes.

Okay-so the robot went and hid on her.

And then his creator controlled him, and then the robot went out on it's own.

Okay, either of those explanations works for Hank having the glowing red eyes.

And, both of them sound like they make good sense.

I'd say those are good theories you were thinking.

I will be able to record it Monday, cause only one show records then. I already have it set.

And I'm looking forward to it.

The robot became invisible so it initially got away that way.

After that, it created a whole lot mayhem while being plenty visible.

But going invisible is how it escaped the military.

In the end, Kara vanquished the evil robot thing by getting really in touch with her anger and letting it all out on the robot.

And, after that, she cut herself at work and was bleeding.

Which never happens, of course, because Kryptonians don't get injured that easily.

So it's possible that Monday's episode will deal with what getting angry like that has done for Kara.

It's called "Human for a Day," so I'm guessing we're gonna see a at least temporarily de-powered Kara.

I can't imagine that will last long, but the whole show is all about her learning to become a hero.

So, just like Buffy had that episode where the Watcher's Council stripped Buffy of her powers to lock her in with an insane vampire and see how she'd fare, I'm thinking this episode might be about how Kara can be a hero if she doesn't have Kryptonian powers to use.
