at the end of the film, as the two survivors (the little boy and the 17 y/o girl) are crawling out of the wreckage of the train, they look up and see a polar bear staring down at them. just for a split-second, you see the bear kinda lick his chops sort of, suggesting he is out looking for food and hungry. jackpot, he found some food!

so, the two survivors are the last people on Earth, a male and female, and maybe an analogy for Adam and Eve in the garden, and these two restart the population over again, maybe. the odd thing is, that they are both really young, stuck out in the cold with no food, no weapons, no technology, no survival skills in a frozen-over Earth for almost 20 years, and a carnivorous hungry bear surveying them from a short distance.

the movie ending raises a question, does humanity get another chance and start over? does it deserve to? there are two answers for this question.

the pessimist says the bear came right down and had a couple of tasty snacks, bam! end of humanity and deservedly so. the whole film is a not so subtle condemnation of our collective effect on this planet.

the optimist says the boy and girl teamed up with their collective will to survive, and had meat for a couple of days, found a way out of the wreckage and down to a frozen city 200 miles back, settled in and had children eventually, thus restarting humanity and another chance to do it right this time.

which one are you? pessimist or optimist? humanity apologizer or disgusted with this species?

i think the bear had some tasty snacks. game over. good riddance. mother nature needed a long break.
