I agree "I feel Pretty" placement is a little odd. Although at that time, she does not know what has transpired. But it might have done better earlier.

I felt chemistry between Maria and Tony. Of course, it is all about "love at first sight" and kept apart by feuding dynamics in their lives. Not families as in Romeo and Juliet but gangs... But I did like they tried to show more to their relationship.

I like Cool. It made it all more threatening to what was happening with Riff and Tony fighting over the gang. Although why Tony just did not throw the gun in the water because he's trying to prevent the escalation, and so he had the choice. That is the loophole by doing it that way, but I felt it heightened everything.

I'm going to be brutally honest here and say that there's NO way that David Alvarez or Ariana DeBose looked age-appropriate for these roles.

That's the irony of this movie. We keep hearing how it's such an ~improvement~ over the 60's version but what they really mean is that it's more ethnically diverse.

Nobody thinks about the fact that these characters are not your average street gangs in their mid-20s. They're teenagers.


Also, does anyone else think it was completely weird and unnecessary that Tony Kushner gave Tony and Graziella a backstory? As if he was trying to take the attention away from Riff or something & make Tony more appealing.

I loved the Irish touches to Riff's wardrobe, jewellery and overall appearance in the 2021 movie. Mike looked appropriately gritty, emaciated and simply natural as a 1950's cocky street gang leader:
