West Side Story (1961 + 2021) #1: There's a Place For Us, Somewhere a Place For Us ♫
Is it okay to post about musicals here? I am so pumped about this movie, you have no idea! I own the original 20th Anniversary Edition Boxed Set. I read the book first and then completely fell in love with the movie. It's my absolute favorite musical. I even went with my Grams to see the play :D https://cdn1us.denofgeek.com/sites/d...?itok=XlM7qeee The Cast Nothing can compare to the original, but I'm eager to see Spielberg's take on everything. |
Thanks for this :new: thread Nicole!
I'm happy to know you're looking forward to this movie. Beautiful pic, I  Ansel Elgort who was great in THE FAULT IN OUR STARS and in Spielberg we trust! :pirate: So I thought this over a lot, and I've decided that this thread will be for discussion of both the 1961 and 2020 film versions of West Side Story. :) What I might do over the coming weeks is update the OP with stuff that caters to both the 1961 and 2020 adaptations. I'm shocked we haven't actually had a thread for the Natalie Wood movie in the past, but I guess it was discussed a lot in the Musicals genre thread. I will inform people in the Musicals thread of this WSS thread, so that anything WSS related usually posted there can now be directed to here. :wiggle: So, any fans of the 1961 movie? :look: I adored Russ Tamblyn as Riff. |
Appreciation for the 1961 movie:

^ Good for them!
Thanks for bringing that over, Jen. Feels like a while since we've had an update about Spielberg's movie. |

^ Thanks for those ;)
This documentary about the making of West Side Story - both the 1957 stage production and the 1961 movie - is really insightful with lots of flashes from past to present day showing its major influence on the dance industry plus how it revealed the prejudices of interracial relationships of the time and how Shakespeare's classic Romeo + Juliet really shaped the story. A great watch, particularly for those unfamiliar with the success of the stage production. |
currently watching this movie for the first time on Netflix
I saw part of it in choir class back in middle school but have never seen the whole thing before love the reference to it though on Gilmore Girls Jess  https://66.media.tumblr.com/89e9d72c...br0o8_400.gifv also at the beginning I was shocked to hear the song I had no idea that this song was from this movie? I've heard the Charlotte Church version so many times |

The best version is the Quintet (Ensemble) scene, just before Riff and Bernardo die. Just a great summary of the tension between the two gangs and everyone anticipating this big event (with Maria, Anita Tony being all romantic) Here's a pic from 2019 of the cast of the Jets in the 2020 film hanging out together in real life, so great how it looks like a movie still (the actor in the middle with the cigarette, black jacket and white shirt is Mike Faist who is playing Riff) - |
