Video Game Cutscene Movie Club (Watch/Discussion)

In the last few decades, video games have come a long way. From humble beginnings in Pong, games can now be incredibly cinematic, featuring nuanced writing and expressive acting made possible by advancements in performance capture technology.

As the overlap between movies and games increases with ever more actors, stunt performers, writers, directors, composers, producers, and developers working in both mediums, I thought it might be worth having a place in the Movies board to discuss storytelling in gaming and introduce non-gamer cinephiles to an area of filmmaking they might be missing out on.

You don't need to be a gamer to enjoy the amazing stories games have to offer.

To start things off, one of the best stories in a video game in recent memory, and one some moviegoers may find themselves vaguely familiar with if they've seen a recent film adaptation, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End:

Found a review from the perspective of it as a cutscene movie:

Brilliant :new: thread idea! It can be accessed in the General Discussion portion of the Board Guide. :)

This is the ideal thread for me; I always enjoyed searching for these compilations on youtube after watching gamers or playing the games myself.

Love that you highlighted Uncharted 4. My favorite game of all time followed by Grand Theft Auto 5.

The Uncharted games always had an amazing cinematic potential (even though you won't find me rushing to watching the Tom Holland movie they did :nono:) and Uncharted 4's cut scenes truly capture Nathan's wild adventures with Sam and Sully as well as his beautiful romance with Elena.

Rafe's actor should have been nominated for his performance.

Thanks! :)

Yeah, for various reasons I'm sometimes unable to play a particular game so it's nice to still be able to experience the story this way.

Uncharted 4 is one of the greats  , up there with Red Dead Redemption II, and The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. I also love Yakuza: Like A Dragon, and Horizon Zero Dawn.

There are so many gorgeous vistas and memorable set pieces in A Thief's End. :sigh: And it sold me on Nate/Elena in a way the previous games had never managed to. Nate and Elena's relationship felt so much more real in Uncharted 4. :bawl: :melt: I watched the Tom Holland movie and unfortunately I was disappointed with it, for so many reasons.

Warren Kole was great as Rafe! Would've been cool if he'd been nominated at the BAFTA Games Awards. I suppose it would've been too Uncharted-heavy since Nolan North, Emily Rose and Troy Baker all got noms, but it just goes to show how stellar the performances in A Thief's End were. I'd love to see Kole in more stuff. Apparently he does a lot of police procedurals, but those aren't really my bag.

I think the reason why Nathan and Elena's relationship might appeal to the neutrals more in the fourth game is that Elena doesn't put up with Nate's BS (such as his decision to hide the truth about his mission with Sam for so long). She walks away, and only comes back when her husband's life is in danger. She gives him a clear message that she won't become a submissive life partner for him just because she's a woman. Then she proves herself to be his equal on the battle ground when they partner up to save Sam. She's bad a s s in every sense of the word and more than a match for him. :love_story:

But I personally loved their relationship ever since the beginning of the first game. Their banter was always HOT. :glow:

I'd heard he was in that detective show that Jennifer Lopez used to be in  and played her love interest I think?

He was robbed of a nomination. His performance was up there with Emily's for me. Both outstanding. I loved Kole's sarcastic voice when Nate is trying to reason with Rafe about giving Sam a second chance.

An update on Hogwart's Legacy aka the Harry Potter game that is taking years to come out and we almost forgot about it --
