They did. Such a tragic story in general of the sinking. So sad.

there has been so many speculations and controversy surrounding Jack's death and whether or not he could've been saved over the years and it's understandable that James Cameron has become so frustrated about it. I think it's surprising that over 20+ years later people are still mad that Jack died and still obsessing over it. Over the years many people have complained that Jack could've been saved, I remember James once said that the problem was not the size of the door but the buoyancy, in the movie when both Jack and Rose tried to climb on the door they both fell off because they were too heavy, so only 1 person could use the door at one time, but some people are still obsessed they even did experiments of their own to try to prove whether or not 2 people were able to use the door at the same time as a floating device hence save both Jack and Rose's life to try to dispute James' explanation.

While I understand the fact that Jack was such a popular character and his death in the movie was so tragic to watch for so many people, but at the end of the day, both Jack and Rose are just fictional characters, so I think it's ridiculous that so many people have become so obsessed about his death over the years, some people even blame Rose for Jack's death and hate her for it, and I remember seeing someone posting a comment on youtube going so far as accusing Rose of "murdering" Jack (obviously from an obsessive Jack fan), which I think is so ridiculous and unfair, these people who blame Rose obviously did not pay attention to the film and do not understand the meaning of 'murder' if these people had paid attention to the movie, it was so obvious that it was Jack's own decision to sacrifice himself in order to save Rose, it was his OWN choice, Rose did not intentionally kill Jack but people still blame her, and whenever I point out to them that Jack made his own decision to sacrifice himself to save Rose, they make up other excuses to blame Rose, it really annoys me whenever I see these obsessive irrational Jack fans blaming and hating on Rose for Jack's death

Jack's death and the question of whether it could have been avoided is something I'm not really bothered about anymore When I was younger, I analyzed it like crazy and constantly complained to people about how ridiculous it was that he allowed Rose to lie all over the door with him completely stuck in the water... Now that I'm older, I see the self-sacrifice element of it that was clearly intended by Jim Cameron. He wanted to display the heroic element of Jack's character in that he was prepared to give up his own life in order to secure that Rose lived on.

Powerful.

I totally agree with you on that, I think it's so ridiculous that 20+ years later so many people are still so upset and so obsessed with Jack's death, some people still try to analyze it like you did, but fortunately you grew wiser as you grew up and came to understand the real reason why Jack had to die in the movie, unfortunately I can't say the same for a lot of other people still obsessed about it, their obsession with Jack's death after so many years has passed is irrational to me.
I don't think Jack's death was suppose to be scientific, but rather Jack had to die for creative purposes for the sake of the story, let's be honest, Titanic is based on a tragic event that happened 100+ years ago, thousands of people died in the sinking, for a film to be based on such a tragic event, it would be foolish to think that the film would get a happy ending. So of course many people had to die in the film, including Jack, much of the story especially the first half of the movie was focused on Jack & Rose and their forbidden lovestory, while Jack's death was not necessary, but it played a pivotal role in depicting the full scale of tragedy the Titanic story really was. In reality, many people died and many people lost their loved ones in the sinking, and as a filmmaker making a movie based on such a tragic and heartbreaking event in history, you would want to create an ending that not only reflected the true scale of the tragedy realistically, but also make an ending that would make a huge impact on the audience, and Jack dying certainly did that. Jack & Rose were the main characters in the film, by killing off one of those main characters as a sacrifice to save the other served several purposes, 1. Jack sacrificing himself to save Rose so she could live on to fulfill the promise she made to Jack, 2. Jack's sacrifice proved just how much he loved Rose, 3. Rose losing the love of her life mirrored what so many women had gone through, many of the female passengers on the Titanic had lost their boyfriends, fiances and husbands in the sinking, many of the men sacrificed themselves to save the women & children. The tragic fate of Jack & Rose's lovestory was a sad reflection of the fate of so many other couples in the real sinking.
Imagine if Jack had lived and he and Rose spent the rest of their lives living that happy life together that they had dreamt of, would that happy ending make the same kind of impact on the audience? Absolutely not, and I think it would've been inappropriate for the couple to have a happy ending for such a tragic film like this, if Jack had lived it would've been an unrealistic representation of the real tragedy. So while Jack didn't necessarily have to die, he could have lived, but he still needed to die in order for the storytelling to accurately reflect on the real tragedy, hence why Jack's sacrifice and death and the sad fate of his relationship with Rose was so powerful and tragic and impactful with the audience. And I think it's sad that so many people who obsess over Jack's death still don't understand the real reason why he had to die.
