Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events
I saw this movie a few days ago, and I found it quite enjoyable. The only thing that really bugged me was Jim Carrey and his over-the-top-ness. He wasn't evil enough to play the villian.
I haven't read the books, but after seeing this I think I might check them out. Anyone else seen this family flick? __________________

I couldn't find it either. I searched but no results came up, so I started it. If there was one and it's found, you can close this one.

Oh, no worries - I think that if neither of us could find it then this one is just fine.
By the way, I've never read the books, but I hear they're a bit depressing (which is why I'll probably stay away from the films, even though the first one looks really interesting). Care to comment? __________________

I saw it last night and I really, really enjoyed it. I had never read the books and didn't actually care if I saw the movie or not, but agreed, went, and thoroughly enjoyed it. And I laughed out loud several times, which I didn't expect at all.
The direction was brillaint with images much like Tim Burton, Jim Carrey didn't annoy me (which I expected) and the girl who plays Viola I thought was just beautiful. I think people were a little blah when they heard Brad Silberling would be directing this, but I think he's great, and proved himself again witht his movie. Pretty enjoyable. |

Despite having never read the books, I absolutely loved the movie when I saw it with a young friend. The visuals were particularly beautiful and the cast was very...attractive
Anyway, I enjoyed it. __________________

I was actually dragged along to it, because my mother wouldn't let my ten year old sister see it unless she had a guardian with her, because it was supposed to be all dark. And she didn't want to go, so I was forced into seeing it. I think I enjoyed it more than her. I loved the acting (minus Jim Carrey, but I've only ever liked him in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and I was proud to see little Aussie Emily Browning up there. I couldn't even hear her accent, she hid it extremely well.
It's not that depressing...dark, yes, but not in a serious way. It's more overexaggerated, I found that humerous. The narrator is all "If you want to see something happy, go to cinema two now. Don't say I didn't warn you..." but it's a kids movie, so it's pretty much all bark, little bite. Although, yes, I jumped in one part. When the snake jumped out, hmmm. I loved the Happy Littlest Elf gags and the intro, set the movie perfectly. But there are plenty of one-liners that detract from the darkness. I think it's a great holiday film that kids over nine and adults can both enjoy. I think I might check out the books before university starts again. __________________

Cool - thanks, everyone, I'll definitely check it out - and the books really do sound interesting.

I'll probably end up taking one or two of my nieces and/or nephews to see this...
My nephew Bob is a huge fan of Jim Carrey....He'll be the one who drags me to the theater... I hope it's as good as it looks...(visually) Claudia __________________

Thought the movie was ok. Best thing...- the end credits! They were fantastic.

I saw this movie, the second day it came out in Oz. I went with my best friend and we decided to go and watch this movie, rather than Ella Enchanted, which we decided on before going to the movies. I really did enjoyed it and I know my friend did as well. I think the only thing that kind of bugged me was Jim Carrey's character. Sometimes, he did act over the top.
The thing I most enjoyed the most throughout the movie was definitely Sunny, the baby. Even though, she couldn't talk, those lines on the bottom of the screen translating what she was saying was so funny. My favourite character was Violet. It's nice to see a not well known Aussie actress doing so well in a Hollywood movie. |
