Moderator UPDATE: I'm happy to announce that this thread, which was previously for the 1996 Baz Luhrmann R+J film only, is now open for discussion of ALL film adaptations of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

It seems logical to do this, so that each version can be compared and analysed in one place. There are too many adaptations to mention, so for the sake of reference, I have included a link in the OP which will point you directly to a full list of adaptations of the play.

Happy posting, R+J fans!

Please continue sharing your thoughts, images etc

Hmmh I never really liked that movie with Leonardo Di Caprio and Clare Danes. It was just a little too modern for me.
Leonardo Di Caprio was the only good actor in that movie IMO.

I like the 1996 version

Leo is great in it

I’ve never seen the Zeffirelli adaptation

Really? Even though I thought Leo was better in this than in Titanic, I thought John Leguizamo and Harold Perrineau as Tybalt and Mercutio were superb and MILES above the rest of the cast.

The scene where Mercutio dies was just brilliantly tense. Perrineau nailed it.

Also the actor who played Juliet's father was believably angry and funny at the right times.

I definitely agree that the actors that played Tybalt and Mercutio were amazing. I think Mercutio was the best actor and character in the whole movie.

^ Thanks for posting this! I can't listen to it right now but I am pretty obsessed with the Screen Junkies videos so this should be good.

I hope it's not too brutal on the modernization of it!

Harold was exceptionally good in this movie. He displayed such a wide range of emotions in the short period in which his character was killed on the beach - shock, humor, fear, anger and vulnerability.

It's a great channel for pointing out weaknesses in movies (even those we generally enjoy)

Anyone who can't take a joke should avoid the channel altogether

I'll be sure to watch it later

Claire Danes' chemistry with Leo was underrated. I thought it was just as good as Kate's.

You can tell you're older than the average Letterbox'd reviewer when they're hyping up Paul Rudd whereas you remember the time when people literally had no clue who he even was and found him silly as Paris

I might get hate for this, but I think Leo was vastly superior in this than Titanic. He seemed a little out of his depth in Titanic, whereas R+J suited his youthful looks + personality more.

I think he was mostly known for that unloved Halloween 6 movie but yes Clueless got him on the map.

It sucks he drew the short straw here and played the unlucky guy who Juliet is basically contracted to marry... Paul Rudd actually plays him as a decent guy but Juliet's dad is too aggressive about everything

Yeah Leo always looked too young for Titanic to me. Weirdly enough, he seemed more comfortable speaking Shakespearean dialogue than James Cameron's

I agree. I personally always liked Romeo and Juliet more than Titanic, along with Leo's performance in the former as well. Even though I like Titanic, I also always found the film overrated. I think Leo's best acting was when Mercutio was killed then he killed Tybalt for it. I don't think I really got into any movies Paul Rudd was in, I think I saw Clueless once but never got into it. I started to like him the most in the Antman films lol.
