Director's Cut openings US, UK, Australia

http://www.jakegyllenhaal.com/news.html

has partial listing of US premieres outside of Seattle (starts in LA and NY this Friday; some cities have later dates). Not many so far; the site says to check later for a more complete list.

Says DDDC opens in Australia Aug 12, UK Aug 27.

per screen take for DDDC in US

from the gyllenhaalgroup on Yahoogroups:

"DONNIE DARKO opened last weekend in limited release on 6 screens in
the US, earning $8,198 per screen!

"To put that in perspective....

I, ROBOT - $6,219 per screen
SPIDERMAN 2 - $4,001 per screen
BOURNE SUPREMACY - $16,596 per screen

"This bodes well for DDDC to open wider! "

I've seen this movie twice. But I still don't understand the end. But anyway, I think I'll buy the DVD just to try to understand...

See, Frank had to save him at the beginning, and then tell him to do all of those different things (like flooding the school and burning down the house) so that Donnie would then see why he needed to die. If Donnie didn't do those things, and if Gretchen didn't get killed, then Donnie wouldn't have sent the jet engine back in time to kill himself, which is why he was laughing just before it hit the second time. He realized that he had to sacrifice himself in order to stop the world from ending. It is a bit confusing, but it really does make a certain amount of sense.

The DVD has special features (such as the contents of Grandma Death's book) which help to explain it all better. It also has a "deleted" scene which lets Donnie know more about himself, but which I don't want to reveal, so that you are not spoiled.

In the film, does anyone have any idea why Drew Barrymoore says 'Donnie Darko' and then her and Noah Wyle just both start to crack up laughing.

New Review in Guardian (UK)

It's more about the film's history as a "cult phenomenon" than about the DDDC, which opens there later this month. But it still has a few entertaining lines.

I watched the movie with the commentary by the director and Jake, and when it got to this scene, the director said it was to show how Donnie had affected those around him. Not sure why the name made them laugh, but it is obvious that they think of him as more than just another student.

Thanks, Mr Impatient.

I d/led the deleted scenes and I thought some of them should have been in the film instead of other scenes. Like the Watership Down scenes. I loved them. And the father/son one. Oh well.

I actually just recently saw the movie and it's hilariously awesome. Just had to pass by and say that.

soooooooo happy i found this thread!!!! My sister made me watch this movie some time ago (due to a Jake obsession...) but I was glad I saw it. It's a really good movie and the first time I saw it, it confused me a LOT but I couldn't stop thinking about it. Reading your comments helped me understand it A LOT better. Whew... and that song Mad World gives me the chills everytime i hear it.

Latest DDDC release dates (US):

08/07/04 Neptune Theatre - Seattle, WA

08/20/04 Loft Cinema Twin - Tuscon, AZ
Visions Cinema - Washington, DC
AMC River East - Chicago, IL

08/27/04 Brattle Theater - Cambridge, MA
Crown Theatre 15 Block - Minneapolis, MN
Shaker Square Cinemas - Shaker Heights, OH
Inwood Theatre - Dallas, TX
Dobie Theatre - Austin, TX
Prospect Mall Cinemas - Milwaukee, WI
Marcus Westgate Art - Madison, WI

09/03/04 Lumiere Theatre - San Francisco, CA
California Theatre - Berkeley, CA
Cinema 21 Theatre - Portland, OR

I'm surprised to see it's back in Seattle, as it was here for a month before it opened elsewhere. But the Neptune is a bigger theater, with a bigger screen, than the Varsity, where I saw it in June. I hardly ever see a movie twice, but I'm thinking about it, in part because I think I'll be able to see more detail on the full-old-fashioned movie screen (as opposed to modern multiplex sized screen). And it will be interesting to see what I get from it after discussing it with so many on line. I, too, went to see it after seeing Jake in TDAT.

adding: DDDC will also be playing at the Tara Theatre in Atlanta, GA on 09/03
