Re-reading the trilogy;

I think one thing the movie really nailed was not making Nick too dark of a character. There are various hints to stuff that happened in the past that messed with his head, but it is very much repressed (I'm guessing to be saved for the sequels) and we zone in on Noah's issues with her father. We just get tiny hints of his frustrations with his mother such as in the hospital scene with Maggie (called Maddie in the books) and when Anna is telling tales on him in the car.
