What Was The Last Movie You Saw? (DISCUSSION)

Movie: ''Canoa: A Shameful Memory''
Year Released: 1976
Starring: Enrique Lucero, Ernesto Gomez Cruz, & Ramon Clvario Gutierrez, among others.
Plot: ''A priest in a small town creates a lynch mob when he accuses visiting students of being communist agitators on the run from the army in Mexico City.''
Rating out of 5:
Comments: There was a scene in ''Canoa: A Shameful Memory'' where the priest said that he did not open his church to people without knowing ''who'' they are or ''where'' they are from. That sounded strange to me. It was pouring rain outside & those students wanted a place to stay for the night. They came across a church & it got worse for them from there. I watched ''Canoa: A Shameful Memory'' on DVD late last night on loan from a library & it was shocking, disturbing, & heartbreaking. The priest in it wore sunglasses & he reminded me of Jim Jones, but in this case they did not leave a town or place to start a new one. They stayed in a Mexican city & it was controlled by this right-wing priest that manipulated people into thinking those students were Communists & then he sent a lynch mob after them. Madness. My gosh. Certainly this film is not appropriate for young children to watch. Maybe teens if they can handle seeing such travesties. This was the year that the Tlatelolco massacre in Mexico happened. At least 350 people were killed reportedly due Mexican armed forced opening fire on unarmed protestors. I did not know how brutal & horrific Mexico's past is, but yikes. There some quite disturbing events that happened in it during the last century. Check this film out I say if you think you are up to it.

Movie: ''Capitalism: A Love Story''
Year Released: 2009
Starring: Michael Moore, Bernie Sanders, & Elizabeth Warren, among others.
Plot: ''Michael Moore's timely film looks at the successes and failures of the American capitalist system, where the richest one per cent have more than the bottom 95 per cent combined; a system that claims to reward free enterprise but in fact rewards greed. He coaxes an explanation of what derivatives are from experts.''

Comments: ''Capitalism: A Love Story'' is a good Documentary I think. In it there was a song that went like this: ''Cleveland Come on down to Cleveland Town everyone Come and look at both of our buildings Here's the place where there used to be industry This train is carrying jobs out of Cleveland See the sun almost three times a year This guy has at least two D.U.I.s Our economy's based on LeBron James Buy a house for the price of a VCR'' Anyway, it was a serious topic though & the sad effects of capitalism were shown & corporate greed.

Movie: ''The Killing Fields''
Year Released: 1985
Starring: Sam Waterston, Haing S. Ngor, John Malkovich, & Julian Sands, among others.
Plot: ''New York Times reporter Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) is on assignment covering the Cambodian Civil War, with the help of local interpreter Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor) and American photojournalist Al Rockoff (John Malkovich). When the U.S. Army pulls out amid escalating violence, Schanberg makes exit arrangements for Pran and his family. Pran, however, tells Schanberg he intends to stay in Cambodia to help cover the unfolding story -- a decision he may regret as the Khmer Rouge rebels move in.''
Rating out of 5:
Comments: ''The Killing Fields'' is a terrific film & it was nominated for 7 Academy Awards while winning 3 of them. Haing S. Ngor won an Academy Award for ''Best Supporting Actor'' in it. Ngor did not have any prior acting experience before his role in ''The Killing Fields''. Sadly Ngor was shot to death outside his Chinatown home in Los Angeles during 1996. 3 people were charged & convicted of his murder. There had been some criticism of this movie by the late Sydney Schanberg whom Sam Waterston portrayed in it, but this film is exceptional. The scene where Pran comes across the Killing Fields was terrifying. I will mention that though Pol Pot was the dictator/leader of Cambodia in 1975, he was not mentioned I think in this movie or portrayed by an actor in it. The Khmer Rougue was mentioned though. ''The Killing Fields'' is Rated ''R'' & has some profanity, along with blood & gore in it. I recommend watching this powerful movie if ones are able to & can handle seeing atrocities as what happened in Cambodia involving the Khmer Rouge.

Yeah, first time for me, too. I really dug it.

Lovely & Amazing (2001)

I love quiet films involving family dynamics and relationships.
