Biopics / Documentary Films #1

Our old documentaries thread was lost so I started a new one. This is a general thread, that means in here you can discuss any documentary. :)

The last documentary I watched was Murder By Numbers on IFC.

This is a documentary about serial killers in movies. While it was interesting, I felt it lacked some more depth. It was more of a catalog of performances with some discussion, but I'm a discussion junkie so I wanted more of it. However, it's worth a look.

A few months ago HBO aired Hot Coffee, a documentary about the famous McDonald's hot coffee lawsuit as well as other cases. I thought the doc was engaging and fairly informative.

HBO aired another great documentary last night, The Loving Story.

From IMDB:

Quote:

The Loving Story is a story of love and the struggle for dignity set against a backdrop of historic anti-miscegenation sentiments in the U.S. The Lovings, an interracial couple, fell in love and married at a critical time in American history, and, because of a confluence of social and political turmoil our reluctant heroes bring about change where previously no one else could. They are paired with two young and ambitious lawyers who are driven to pave the way for Civil Rights and social justice through an historic Supreme Court ruling, changing the country's story forever.
It was a great documentary IMO. It was well-researched, focused, sharp, provocative and relevant. They showed us both sides of the coin: the family/human story then the law /technical story. Both were equally compelling.

I recently watched Pururambo in my Anthropology seminar.

It was very poignant and unreserved as it told the story of the "tree people" of the Philippines. It was a fascinating topical depiction of the lives of modern-day foragers, and gave me a nice new perspective on the un-Westernized world. It depicted the tribal world from first being discovered to at last being targeted by Christian missionaries, a really sort of bittersweet passage.

I would highly recommend it.

A great recommendation! Thank you. I'd never heard of this doc before so I'll definitely keep it in mind.
