Bollywood Movies
I'm really shocked that there's no thread. I remember that there used to be one a few years ago.
I saw Bajirao Mastani in IMAX and it was amazing. __________________

Orange County has international grocery stores, especially Indian ones-You'll find some there. Then again,Netflix has so many on streaming and so do Hulu and Amazon Prime.
I don't get it-I haven't been on this board in eons, but the Bollywood thread used to be so active. Priyanka Chopra is so popular now and she's going to be in the Baywatch movie. I can't even talk about her career on her tread or her as a person w/o people getting uncomfortable. Considering what a hot topic whitewashing and white domination in Hollywood is,it makes me sad. __________________

The thread I was talking about was in Quantico. I tried to start a thread for her in the celeb board, but no one wanted to post. It's frustrating, because to me,it seems like the mindset about white celebrities is true. People don't want to see a face that's a different skin color.

I am surprised this thread is lacking any discussion, considering there is alot of movies to talk about.

There are a lot of films but the genre is not one I enjoy a lot.
I did see a Bollywood styled film years ago and sat through it but didn't enjoy it much, "Bride & Prejudice". |

I loved Bride & Prejudice (although I can't quite imagine Jane Austen's face if she were still alive, after the scene of Mr. Kohli on the bed, lol)!!!!
For some reason (and I mean this in the best possible sense!), it reminded me a bit of the Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello musicals. I really don't mean this as a criticism -- it was such a bright, cheerful telling of the original that I couldn't even begin to be upset about the tonal (and textual) liberties they took. I haven't haven't been interested in many of the movies that have come out yet this year, so maybe I just need to check out more of the director, Gurinder Chada's other movies since the only other one I've seen was Bend it like Beckham, which I thought was amazing, but that's hardly the only other movie she's made. Maybe that will give me the courage to dip my toe into more Bollywood, since I'm getting a bit tired of all of the paranoia in the heavily advertised domestic releases (sorry to be so opinionated, but when I watch a movie, I prefer to be entertained by the magic and possibilities of life, instead of getting dragged into conspiracy theories masquerading as thrillers, etc.). BTW, if you haven't yet seen Bride & Prejudice, be sure to stick around long enough to watch the end credits for a lot of behind the scenes tomfoolery. The chemistry between the director, her cast, and her crew is a hoot! |

Nothing wrong with having opinions. You like what you like.
Although I enjoy movies with ideas of the possibilities in life, like you mentioned. I find a lot of Bollywood to be just too much for me at once. I think it effects me negatively because of my anxiety issues. There’s so much to look at and I get anxious in where and what I should be watching rather than just being able to sit back and enjoy. |

I can see how all of the things going on at any one time could feel overwhelming to anyone.
I really enjoyed all of the scenes that depicted a wedding as being a major event within the community, but they're kinda shocking to someone who, like me, is Western, so the depiction of all of the hoopla attendant to the marriage of someone who I presumed to be of a rather high caste status (I can't forget the lyrics, "God bless you for bringing this marriage into town") was about as alien as it gets for me. Which is not to say that we Westerners don't go in for big, fancy, expensive weddings -- it's just that my expectations of the norms to be more... subdued.... IOW, I tend to think garden party and not street celebration when I imagine weddings for the 1%, so you shouldn't feel the need to justify the reasons that the... exuberance... kinda leaped out at you and almost chased you away.... The bits of the basic story that resonated with me, though, were the bits that harkened back to Jane Austen, in representing the universality of the conflict between being a woman of a certain class whose relatives want her to marry up instead of marrying down and all of the meddling/game-playing by friends/relatives that tends to happen. Ideally, a woman and a man who are attracted to each other should (IMO) be able to develop a natural affection and respect for each other, but the fact that "Mr. Darcy" as depicted in Bollywood is still describing the heroine's mother as 'a total nightmare" to his friend, in an attempt to prevent a marriage that he sees as being stage-managed for material gain tells me a lot about how the real world will probably always work.... Which is the reason that all of the bright colors (which I can understand you might have found a bit chaotic) and the energetic music/dance scenes provided a bit of anodyne to some otherwise rather unsettling givens. (Which is probably me hinting that I liked Bend it Like Beckham better, but that may well just be my Western prejudices about something Easterners don't mind discussing openly as much as I tend to). LOL. I want it all in a movie: I want hope, happiness, and love. Is that too much to ask? [Please don't answer]. |

Never too much to ask, I answered anyway.
But it’s nice when you can be passionate about a film genre that does evoke so many positive feelings. |
