In her new role, Kinney puts Alex’s job performance under a microscope and is sceptical of her ability to continue as Chief Surgical Resident. It’s no easy task upholding a surgeon’s responsibilities while focusing so much time and energy on a comatose fiancé, and Kinney’s going to make Alex prove she’s up to it.

I could see that, too. Just because they have personal differences doesn't mean that Dawn doesn't see how good Alex is at her job.
