Winners will be announced Feb. 21 as the WGA West holds its ceremonies at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City and the WGA East hosts its honors at the Pierre Hotel in New York.
In the TV drama category, NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" was nominated for two episodes, "Abomination" and "Loss," both by Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters. LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Marlo Thomas (news) has signed on to do a five-episode arc on NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

Thomas will portray a judge who is known for speaking her mind and serves as a mentor to the show's assistant district attorney, played by Diane Neal. The first of Thomas' five episodes is scheduled to air next week in the drama series' regular Tuesday 10 p.m. slot.

"We're huge fans of her work," said "Law & Order: SVU" executive producer Neal Baer, who called the character "a dynamic and savvy judge."

In addition to the NBC drama series, Thomas will be seen in the upcoming Lifetime TV movie "Deceit," about a grieving widow who becomes a suspect in the disappearance of her wealthy husband. "Deceit" is set to bow March 15. Thomas, known for her 1960s sitcom "That Girl," recently hosted the Lifetime special "Our Heroes, Ourselves" and the TV movie "Two Against Time."

Law & Order Cop Merkerson Leads 'Lackawanna"
Hollywood Reporter

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Longtime "Law & Order" cast member S. Epatha Merkerson has landed the lead role in the upcoming HBO original film "Lackawanna Blues."
She will play Nanny, caretaker to a group of eccentrics at an all-black rooming house in Lackawanna, N.Y. Merkerson will star opposite film rookie Markus Franklin, who plays an abandoned boy. Franklin is appearing in the Tony Kushner musical "Caroline, or Change."
"Blues" will begin shooting next month in Los Angeles.
With George C. Wolfe signed to direct, "Blues" is being transformed from an Obie-winning one-act play into an ensemble drama by its author, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, who has a role in the film, as does Halle Berry. Both Santiago-Hudson and Berry will serve as executive producers.
HBO recently closed a flurry of deals with Delroy Lindo, Henry Simmons ("NYPD Blue"), Terrence Howard, Macy Gray, Hill Harper ("The Handler") and Thomas Jefferson Byrd ("He Got Game") to round out the ensemble. Already cast in "Blues" are Jeffrey Wright, Rosie Perez and Liev Schreiber.

NBC: New 'Law & Order' Franchise Coming Next Season
(Wednesday, March 03 11:49 AM)
By Daniel Fienberg

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Though a possible fourth installment of Dick Wolf's powerful "Law & Order" series isn't on NBC's development slate for the fall season, the network remains confident that a new permutation of the franchise will be ready to debut sometime next year.
NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker tells reporters that due to the network's commitment to year-round programming, even if a fall launch is impossible, but there will be no reservations launching a new "Law & Order" outside of the traditional September or October period.

While Zucker won't give specifics on what brand of law and/or order the latest incarnation would cover, but it sounds as if ideas have been bandied about.

"With regards to the fourth edition, it's a pretty unique twist on the franchise and it's significantly different from any of the first three," he says. "As we've said all along, these are four different shows, each unique. 'SVU' is as different from 'Law & Order' as 'Criminal Intent' is as different from 'SVU' as any of the other procedural crime dramas anywhere else."
Zucker also scoffs at the notion that the marketplace has already reached a saturation point with Wolf's brand of compelling, but formulaic drama.

"This franchise is hotter than it's ever been," he insists.

The original "Law & Order" is down nearly 2 million viewers per night from the same time last season (16.2 million vs. 18 million), but Zucker attributes that dip to an even large decline in audience for the show's "West Wing" lead-in.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" has dipped from 15.2 million viewers last year at this time to 12.8 million, but the show has survived a move from Friday nights and still regularly wins its Tuesday night 10 p.m. ET time slot.

Sunday night stalwart "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" has seen the lowest level of viewer attrition, falling from 14.6 million to 13.2 million, perhaps the victim of the renewed strength of CBS' Sunday movie franchise.

All three entries play strongly in reruns, syndication and during the doldrums of the summer and all three have been successful in retaining viewers in the adult 18-49 demographic that NBC craves.
NBC should be called NBC: The Law and Order network.

Alexander, Martin Haunt 'Carol'
Fri Mar 12, 1:58 AM ET
By Nellie Andreeva
Quote:
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Jason Alexander and Jesse L. Martin are set to co-star opposite Kelsey Grammer in "A Christmas Carol," an NBC musical based on the stage production at Madison Square Garden.

Director Arthur Allan Seidelman (Broadway's "Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks") has come on board to shoot the Hallmark Entertainment-produced take on the classic Charles Dickens classic which stars Grammer as Ebenezer Scrooge.

Alexander will play Scrooge's dead business partner Marley, whose ghost visits Scrooge on Christmas Eve. Martin will play the Ghost of Christmas Present.

Filming on the project is scheduled to begin in June in Budapest, Hungary, for a November premiere.

Alexander recently wrapped a starring turn in the Los Angeles production of "The Producers" and toplined CBS' untitled comedy pilot about a sports writer which is in contention for fall.

Martin, who stars as Detective Ed Green on NBC's drama "Law & Order," also is in talks to appear in the Broadway production of "The Color Purple." The actor's credits also include Fox's "Ally McBeal" and the Broadway play "Rent."

I found the following on the Toronto Star website. The part that mentions L&O is near the end:
Quote:
Lenore Zann, best known for her one-woman tour de force Hey! Marilyn, repackaged as The Marilyn Tapes, is in a bleach box.

She's just wrapped three episodes of Stephen King's miniseries Kingdom Hospital.

"I play a white trash Courtney Love-like character," she says from Vancouver. "She's in love with the character who is in jail for torching his whole family — it's okay because he did it for us."

King hand-picked the actors from audition tapes but Zann didn't meet him until last week's cast party in Vancouver.

"He is very gentle, not at all like the horror master. He's kind, very sweet and sort of shy with a self-deprecating sense of humour."

Zann has also appeared on The Chris Isaak Show, Millennium and Andromeda but she has a soft spot for a guest role she did in New York on Law & Order.

"I played a very flirtatious barfly who saw a crime go down and they have to talk her into spilling the beans on her friends. It's been my dream to work with Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterston.

"It was 29 below zero and we were in a limo to keep warm. Jesse L. Martin (Det. Eddie Green) was in Rent and Jerry did musicals so we'd sing showtunes between scenes when they weren't interrogating me on the streets."

'Law & Order' Losing Veteran Jerry Orbach - Sources
Quote:
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Is it time for the "Law & Order" troops to throw a goodbye party for Briscoe?
Sources say "Law & Order" veteran Jerry Orbach will depart Dick Wolf's long-running crime drama at the end of the season after 12 years on the beat as wise-cracking Detective Lennie Briscoe. However, Orbach may still remain in business with Wolf with a role on the upcoming fourth installment of the franchise: "Law & Order: Trial by Jury."
As for the flagship series, there is no word yet about a replacement for Orbach, but one scenario involves his character's partner, Detective Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin), being promoted.
"'Law & Order' has a 15-year track record of Dick Wolf never commenting on casting changes during the season," a spokesman for the show said Thursday. Indeed, "Law & Order" has famously weathered many cast changes since it bowed in 1990. At present, Orbach is the longest-serving member of the current "Law & Order" cast members, having signed on during the show's third season in 1992.
