That's because there's a lot more people on highways than on racetracks. A much higher proportion of people on racetracks get killed there. Your logic doesn't work.

Well, safety technology has come a long way, and the number of race track deaths has gone down significantly. There have been 520 deaths in US auto racing over the past 25 years, mostly on short tracks.
