born;
Hugh Michael Jackman
12 October 1968
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

personal facts;
-Hugh was born the youngest of five children.
-Hugh was separated from his parents the first year and a half of his life, instead living with his god parents because his mother was suffering from severe depression. She continued to battle severe depression throughout Hugh's childhood.
-When Hugh was 8-years-old, his mother left him, his four siblings, and father behind in Australia without warning, moving to England to attend to her sick mother. She remarried, started a new family and didn't return. Hugh says he grew up troubled by her absence, but never resented her because he understood what she was going through. The two have recently become very close.
- After Hugh's mother left to England, he was bullied as a child at school. He was also verbally and physically abused by his older brothers, sometimes to the point of physical injury. The 5 siblings were often left to fend for themselves after school because their father was working, and Hugh's brothers would abuse him mostly while their father was away. Hugh also wanted to be a dancer until his brothers called him "gay" and a "poof" for wanting to dance. Hugh became very angry around this time of his life and got into several fights in school as a result. He later came to terms with everything and mellowed out into the calm, gentle person he is today. He has said that he channels his inner teenage rage from those years into the character of Wolverine. Years after the abuse, when Hugh was an adult, his brothers apologized to him for how they used to treat him, which Hugh says helped him let go of his anger.
-Hugh and his siblings were raised by their single father, a devout Christian, good principled man, and an accountant. Hugh calls his father his hero and says he learned everything he knows about helping others, good morals, hard work, and compassion from his father.
-Hugh regards his wife as "the greatest woman [he has] ever met." He also frequently calls her the "most beautiful" and credits her for "saving" him and bringing him out of his shell.
-Hugh and his wife, Deb, suffered from infertility. After in vitro fertilization, Deb sadly had two miscarriages. They always planned on adopting at least one child, but after suffering the emotional pain of not being able to have a child together biologically, they adopted two children. Both children are mixed race because Hugh and Deb said that's where the biggest need was.
-Hugh has been known to turn down major film roles so that he can stay close to Deb and the children. He and Deb have a rule that no matter how intense their work schedules get, they cannot be apart for more than two weeks. For the past several years, Hugh has often been spotted by paparazzi while walking his children to school and picking them up. Hugh is by all accounts very involved in his children's lives and education, even attending Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings and helping them with their homework despite his busy schedule. Hugh is often spotted by onlookers playing with his children in the park, taking them out, and spending time with them.
-Hugh said his nicknames growing up and even in adulthood were "sticks" (for having such skinny legs), "pea-head" (for having a small head, broad shoulders, and a tall body), and "V" (for having acne in the shape of a V on his forehead).
-Hugh's father's health has sadly deteriorated the past few years as a result of Alzheimer's Disease.
-Hugh has suffered from skin cancer on his face 4 times in a relatively short period of time and underwent surgery and skin treatments.
-When Hugh performed in The Boy From Oz on Broadway, he faced health challenges including the flu and a broken foot. Despite his ailing health towards the latter part of the production, it is said that Hugh never missed a performance and always gave it his all, even signing autographs for almost every fan afterwards.
-Hugh is left-handed.
-Because Hugh suffers from very bad nearsightedness, he often memorizes what he has to say when hosting shows because even with contact lenses, he cannot read the teleprompters. He has said that his vision is so poor that without contacts or glasses, he cannot read a restaurant menu.
-Hugh is very spiritual and meditates twice per day. He studies the Bible, Bhagavad Gita, Koran, and also Aristotle, Shakespeare, and many philosophical texts. He has applied many underlying principles found in these texts to his life.
-Hugh lives a very healthy lifestyle: has never been a smoker, does not drink excessively, works out hard every day early in the morning (even when not training for Wolverine), does yoga, eats healthy, goes to bed early, spends as much time with his family as possible each day, and reads a lot

After graduate school, Hugh gained recognition as a bonafide song and dance man, acting in Beauty and the Beast, Sunset Boulevard, and Oklahoma. quotes from X-Men cast and crew;
“Hugh is a real sweetheart. He’s the most loving guy, and someone who came out of musical theater. I send some ridiculous note, ‘I need anger, that rage, that Russell Crowe side, get into a fight with your wife or something.’ The next day he came up to me and said, ‘Bry, I thought about what you said but if I ever got in a fight with Deborra, I would show up for work in tears.’ I realized that’s the other side of Wolverine and we didn’t want to lose that either — he’s a guy you wouldn’t want to get into a bar fight with but you’d let him babysit your kids.” -Bryan Singer, director

“Hugh is one of the best guys in Hollywood, I love him. He is just an incredible actor, and someone I respect immensely. It has been such an honor to be involved with the X-Men films for so long, I was very happy to be coming back. Not to mention he's not bad to look at ... The Wolverine was our fourth movie together… I had been on a plane for 24 hours and arrived in Sydney and went straight to set and [Hugh] was standing there [waiting for me] with his arms wide open going ‘thank you so much for being here!’ and I melted and forgot about the jet lag and the long journey … and I thought ‘wait we’re here together. Why are you thanking me? I should be thanking you.’ It is a testament to who he is. He is truly a beautiful person... a beautiful soul.” -Famke Janssen

"Hugh is the nicest man I’ve ever met. He is the loveliest man ... Getting to work with Hugh … was great. He’s amazing. The guy’s got grace coming out of every single pore. If we could all be a bit more like Hugh, it would be a very happy planet.” -James McAvoy

“Hugh Jackman is sweet-natured, lovely, and funny every day." -Patrick Stewart

"He is the loveliest, loveliest person. To get to spend your days just… basically sitting behind Hugh Jackman for 12-14 hours… very, very good days.” -Ellen Page

"Hugh is one of the kindest men I've ever met. I was very nervous and Hugh was more concerned about me than I was. He wasn't just sitting around waiting for me to take off my shirt. He was the one who called for the set to be closed and he told a guy who didn't need to be there to beat it. I had to shoot that scene [in Swordfish] three times, and thanks to Hugh it wasn't stressful." -Halle Berry

"Hugh is an amazing man and a fantastic actor ... his discipline is incredible, he is up and in the gym at 4:30 in the morning, every morning. When we arrived there was a 'Jackman' effect and we all started training to try and keep up." -Michael Fassbender

"I love Hugh. I mean, Hugh is the reason I did X-Men Origins. We'd been friends for a long time and it's just so much fun to work with him. You know, just to do fight scenes with Hugh was really terrific because as a dancer, he has that kind of discipline and choreography. And I always studied to be a fight choreographer, and always wanted to be a dancer too, but didn't quite have the feet for it. But we had some remarkable fight scenes together and I'm looking forward to people seeing those." -Liev Schreiber"

“Hugh is always so respectful to everyone and is always looking out for us. Certainly it's not because of his age - it's just the way he lives his life. He's a true gentleman and I've never been around an actor who has such tremendous sense of discipline. It shows. You don't get to have his career and play these characters without a lot of skill and discipline." -Peter Dinklage

"I found a mentor in Hugh. His positive energy really is above and beyond what I could have expected. And he really taught me that it is important to be good to people, that that is the number one priority, no matter what work we do, is to be good to each other, to be kind to each other. And he is generous as well. That’s what I came out of this project feeling like, ‘Wow, I really wanna continue that!’ He’s one of the finest movie stars I’ve ever met. He’s old school and a beautiful man, a great leader and actor. I had such a wonderful time learning from him, from seeing the way he handles himself on set to how he handles fans. He works so hard and knows how to play Wolverine so well. He could hop in and out of character, and he’s such a funny man, too. I think everyone in the industry should want to work with him at some stage."-Lynn Collins

“Hugh is a great guy. He’s a very classy human being. He sets the bar for being classy in Hollywood. It’s almost mayoral, his approach to Hollywood. It’s as much his job to sign an autograph or take a photo with a fan as it is to blow people away with his performance on screen. He could host a master class on how to be a movie star... He’s a tremendous guy and a role model, really.” -Ryan Reynolds

“To be honest, Hugh has an aura that, in this business, I’ve never come across. He’s incredibly disciplined and free. There’s just something about him. You walk away and he hits you. He’s just this person that’s so grounded and so open … I’ve met nobody like him. The way he welcomed me on set, it was just a huge influence... [he] is a hard guy not to like. If you don't, there's something wrong with you … in or out of the business, if you meet a guy like that, you do what you can to stay around a guy like him." -Taylor Kitsch

"Hugh Jackman is the nicest guy on Earth. I was like, ‘Dang, dude,’ he was so super nice.”-Will.i.Am

quotes from cast and crew of Les Miserables;
“Hugh Jackman is the nicest man I’ve ever met ... I would go as far as to say the movie (Les Miserables) wouldn’t exist without Hugh Jackman. There was no second choice; I still don’t have a second choice. He's an extraordinary actor and singer, with extraordinary musical-theater training. He had a great moral compass, very fitting for this very spiritual man. When he sang, he accessed an acting I had never seen in film." -Tom Hooper, director

“Hugh likes to pretend he is not as complicated as he is. He likes to pretend that life is good all the time. On this set I got to see the vulnerable Hugh Jackman. But I can say that all of that goodness and love and grace even when he is being vulnerable is still very much intact. He is simply the best of the best kind of person ... [he] is this magical, alien combination of strength and soul and heart and artistry and fun. We do live in a world that can tend towards the cynical and to have someone in a film like this where it is inherent to the film’s success that you believe in the goodness of the central character and that someone like Hugh exists who has that goodness within him … it made the film soar … we looked to him every day and to his strength and to his indefatigable spirit. He never complained once. He did as many takes as need be, and he was absolutely our rock and our inspiration, and to me personally.”
-Anne Hathaway

"Hugh was very generous with that. It was nice. There was a respect for me being the originator of the role, and the originator of the stage version. I have been so long associated with Les Miserables, going on the past twenty-eight years. Hugh Jackman was great. As I've said before, I wouldn't presume that I need to give anyone advice. We did chat. I said, 'Do you want me to talk to you about this thing musically or vocally?' And he said, 'Yeah.' We talked about different aspects of a couple of the songs he sang, that he was a little bit worried about in terms of how he would approach them. But he is a very astute guy. And a great actor and a singer. He knows what he has to do. Where he needs to be. The main piece of advice I gave him, which seemed to delight him, was I said, 'Don't try and copy me. Do your own version of this. Find your own way of doing this. That is the only way you are going to be original.' He knows that about himself. It was obvious. But I said it anyway, 'Don't copy me, just do your own version of it, and do it honestly.' He was respectful of me. I have to say. I was touched by it, and so delighted to have Hugh Jackman on set." -Colm Wilkinson

“Hugh approaches his life with such grace. One of the things I say to him quite often is … he had a hell of a dad… you know, a hell of a dad. The way he’s been brought up and the way he is with people and everything... it’s kind of like… we are yin and yang in that way.” –Russell Crowe

“Hugh was the leader. He would keep all our spirits up and every Friday he would buy all the cast and crew a lotto ticket because by that time we were on our knees. His capacity for generosity of spirit was extraordinary... [he] is a movie star. Incredibly talented, ridiculously hardworking, and unbelievably generous. I remember he was shooting in February in England in Portsmith, in water in 40-degree weather, with a hundred extras behind him. I think the extras were about to walk off set, like, ‘I’m not doing this.’ It was extraordinarily miserable. But because Hugh was up front, in front of all the guys, take after take after take, again, they managed to stay on.” -Eddie Redmayne

“I can’t say enough about Hugh Jackman. I knew him from New York, and I think what he does in [Les Misérables] is an Everest-like feat. And he does it with such ease every day. I mean, no one could complain, no one could cry about anything because of how hard he was working and the attitude he brought every day to work. It starts at the top, as a company leader, and he’s the greatest." -Aaron Tveit

"Hugh is magical ... he is so good. He is the most talented singer and actor and is an amazing human being. There is nothing wrong with him [I cannot find a flaw]." -Amanda Seyfried

"He is just an amazing, all-around guy. This world is very new to me and I'm at the beginning of my career. To see someone like that, with his level of success, maintain such a balanced lifestyle and mind is inspiring. You never hear anyone say a bad word about Hugh Jackman and if they do it's a lie!” -Samantha Barks

quotes by hugh jackman;

"The word philosophy seems high minded, but it simply means the love of wisdom. If you love something, you don't just read about it; you hug it, you mess with it, you play with it, you argue with it."

"I'm not saying everything I do will be successful. But I can live with a failure if it is born of conviction."

"I've always felt that if you back down from a fear, the ghost of that fear never goes away. It diminishes people."

"I can look back on my life, where there have been moments where things might have gone the other way. Everything is like stepping stones, and I've seen people I admire falter. We're all vulnerable."

"What I respect as far as in myself and in others is the spirit of just doing it. For better or worse, it may work and it may not, but I'm going to go for it. Ultimately I probably prefer to be respected for that than whether it works out or not, either winning or losing."

"I meditate twice a day for half an hour. In meditation, I can let go of everything. I'm not Hugh Jackman. I'm not a dad. I'm not a husband. I'm just dipping into that powerful source that creates everything. I take a little bath in it. My son, Oscar, asks me, 'What's meditation?' I say, 'I'm just gonna go sit with God and have a rest.'"

"Meditation is all about the pursuit of nothingness. It's like the ultimate rest. It's better than the best sleep you've ever had. It's a quieting of the mind. It sharpens everything, especially your appreciation of your surroundings. It keeps life fresh."

"I'm for gender equality because it it should've never been any other way!"

"[I believe it's best to] show yourself, show your emotions. I think for men that is hard. It is not encouraged in our society. It is almost encouraged to be locked off and to have an image of 'this is who I am and this is strength,' but I don't believe that ... I believe that strength is in honesty, and strength and real courage is in opening your heart and not closing it."

"My father is ... [a] very selfless man. I've never heard him say a bad word about anyone. He works hard, he's grateful for things, and he really instilled in me some great values- work ethic and being grateful."

"I've always believed in God and that that journey is the most important journey. I call it the inner journey. And so much of our business is about the outward, so I am fairly strict about my practice of meditation and reflecting and taking a moment to connect to what is real. It's not about false modesty or deflecting. It's just about seeing really that it is not necessarily me, Hugh Jackman, creating all this. There is a greater power and it's about opening up to that and just allowing that to be, and the moment you think even for a second that, "I'm pretty good ... I did this," you're in trouble because it's not the truth. So it's just about being open."

"Giving back is what life is. I feel that way about marriage, and even about performing... the world goes around [by people] providing services for others. Everyday, [the world functions] by people doing things for other people. That's how it works."

"The purpose of life is to love. It can sound trite because I think some people have misunderstood the word. Love to me is the truth. Love means connection. Love means service. Love means modesty. Love is affirming, and everything else separates us. Everything else - when there is no love, it separates us, and Jesus said that."

"It can take courage to love. Sometimes it means dropping the guards. It means just being open, but that to me is why I've acted or as a parent or a husband in life, it's about that, so that's what I constantly work on."

"My father is a real idealist, and he's all about learning. If I asked for a pair of Nikes growing up, it was just a resounding 'No.' But if I asked for a saxophone, one would appear the next day and I'd be signed up for lessons. So anything to do with education or learning, my father would spare no expense."

"My father is my rock. It's where I learned everything about loyalty, dependability, being there day in, day out, no matter what."

“Being with my family makes me happiest. The trick of life is measure and it takes many years to work that out. People think 'if I win the lottery I’ll never work again.' Then you won’t be happy. We all need work. We all need to contribute. But we don’t want to work too much.”

"My wife is truly the greatest woman I have ever known ... [When I met her] that was the first time I felt full love ... [we have] full understanding of each other. I am completely myself with her and she knows everything about me and vice versa. We have each other’s backs."

"The activity of being a husband, a father - those are roles, too, but underneath them is the spiritual center that connects us all, and that's what's most important."

[When asked what intimacy means in a relationship] "Deb and I talk about this all the time. It is something you have to continue to work on. There is one layer of intimacy that is physical, but that is a very surface layer. Real intimacy is being able to say anything to each other. To be able to find the time and the space to connect ... to really serve each other, and not just in a 'what do you need? 'can I massage you?' 'what are we having for dinner' ... but on that deeper spiritual level because that to me is what marriage is about. It's not about 'what can I get out of this?' It's about 'what can I give you?' Unless on that spiritual level, you're growing and your partner is growing, and your only job as a partner is to look after the other person's spiritual circle and make sure that's expanding... if you're doing that, it will come back to you. And that is where real intimacy is found. And it has to be honest. You cannot pretend."

"One of the greatest road blocks to a relationship is how much we take each other for granted."

“I wooed my wife, Deborra, by making crêpes suzette. As I had to be in the kitchen for 45 minutes, I asked her to give me a hand.”

"I’ve had to turn down a few [roles] in my career, but I put my family first."

"The best part about being married is that feeling of being a team. We’re genuine best friends. We have a lot in common. We’re never apart more than two weeks."

quotes by hugh about X-Men;
"It's fair to say that, by 'X-Men 3,' Wolverine had gone a little soft, and I agree with [fans] there. What fans love about Wolverine is his more uncompromising approach to life. He is who he is. He's not always a nice guy. He has got edge. He's an anti-hero. And, there's also a vulnerability in there. There is conflict and battles going on in there."

"The Wolverine role's the easiest to bounce back into. People might assume that I'm getting tired of it, but I don't - it's getting more engaging. I'm having more fun with the character than ever before."

"Days of Future Past is a film that brings up a lot of feelings of gratitude for me. First of all, to walk on set in the first few weeks was like a reunion. I owe a lot to Bryan. He cast me as this character, and that was the first thing I ever did. The first film I did in America had this incredible cast, I was playing this unbelievable role. Even if it was bad, I'd have said yes - I had no other options [Laughs]. But he was a great character. Then, from there, to have everyone we've worked with in the last 10 years, and also Jennifer [Lawrence] and Michael [Fassbender] and James [McAvoy] and Nick [Hoult] - it's an incredible cast. It really is, every day, a treat. To play a character I love... this story is pretty epic, pretty extraordinary. At the time I heard about it, I was doing Wolverine. And I thought, let me just hear what it's about. The moment I heard the pitch for this, I thought, there's no way I'm missing out."

Hugh Jackman is a true humanitarian and an excellent business man who uses his high profile for good. He has made friends in high places over the years, and is the king of networking. He is a very strong proponent of Microcredit/Microfinance, which was created by Nobel Peace Prize winner and Economist, Muhammad Yunus, with the purpose of extending very small loans (microloans) to impoverished borrowers who typically lack collateral, steady employment, and a verifiable credit history. It is designed not only to support entrepreneurship and alleviate poverty, but also in many cases to empower women and uplift entire communities by extension. Microfinance provides a wider range of financial services, especially savings accounts, to the poor. Microfinance is one of the most powerful tools to fight poverty, and Hugh is on board all the way.

Hugh on Muhammad Yunus:
"I have to tell this story about one of the books on my list. As I got to the end of Muhammad Yunus's autobiography, Banker to the Poor, I was so captivated by this man that I wrote a letter to the address on the back cover, a P.O. box in Bangladesh. I wrote, "I'm so inspired by you. I know you have no idea who I am, but I do have some profile in the land where I live—and if there is any way I can help, I'd be happy to do so." I thought I'd be lucky if I ever heard back.

Two days later, I was onstage in New York doing The Boy from Oz, and we had an auction at the end of the show for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. We were auctioning a photo with me or something else ridiculous. The woman who won it came up, and I was chatting with her while they were getting the Polaroid ready. I said, "What do you do?" and she said, "I work in the nonprofit sector," and I said, "Oh, really?" and she said, "Yes, I work for a man who's from Bangladesh." I said, "What? I've just finished reading this book about this man from Bangladesh; he's called Muhammad Yunus." And she said, "I'm his personal secretary."

You've got to be kidding me! I asked her to meet afterward and talk about his work. On his next trip to the States, I sat down with Muhammad Yunus in Los Angeles. He's now advising us on how a certain portion of our production company can be set up to operate like his bank. He's a bit like the Dalai Lama—he's fighting at the front line of poverty, and you couldn't find a happier guy. But he challenges you: What can you do? Not just send aid, but how can you change people's lives from the inside?"

Hugh with Muhammad Yunus;

Beyond supporting Microfinance, Hugh Jackman and his wife, Deb, actively participate in over 30 charities and 25 causes, including Hugh's own nonprofit organization, Laughing Man, and a nonprofit he started with his wife called the Jackman-Furness Foundation. Through their own charities, Hugh and Deb have supplied jobs to many, donated millions of dollars to support hardworking impoverished communities in third world countries, and have given young people, especially minority students who want to study the arts, an opportunity for a great education and a better future. Hugh also is very involved with several other organizations for which he serves as a board member or ambassador such as World Vision, where he is actively involved with the Global Poverty Project, and also the Worldwide Orphans Foundation, where he and Deb fight to improve adoption laws and place children without homes in loving families. Hugh is even a patron for his mother-in-law's charity, The Fight Cancer Foundation, a member of the Board of Directors for a network of charter schools in Harlem, NY called Harlem Village Academies, and was honored with a special Tony Award for his inspiring and generous humanitarian work with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids - for which he has helped raise millions of dollars over the past decade. Hugh has also been involved in Haiti Assistance Programs and the American Red Cross.

Inspired by his father, Hugh has actively given back to the community since his childhood, and has continued to help others in need for all these years. He uses social media to encourage his followers to join him in helping others. For example, in 2009 he started a twitter contest that lead to him donating a total of $100,000 to the favorite charities of the two winners. In 2014 he pledged to donate a dollar to the Prosser Memorial Hospital Foundation for every person who "likes" or "re-tweets" his post through social media. His goal was 20,000 likes/re-tweets or more, which would equate to a donation of greater than $20,000. Hugh has also been known to donate money quietly to several schools, children's hospitals, and even churches that are in poor condition when he is traveling and filming movies [we only learn of his generosity by excited members of these churches and hospitals who decide to say something]. Hugh has also contributed to charities aimed towards protecting endangered species and helping abused, unwanted animals. He even has narrated documentaries on global poverty and destruction of the environment, including Seeds of Hope, which he did through World Vision, and the award winning documentary, The Burning Season. As discussed below, Hugh is also a strong advocate of the Aboriginal people in Australia. Here is a closer look at some of Hugh's philanthropic work.

Hugh is also very inspired by the Aboriginal people and fights to give them a voice and an opportunity to express themselves through art and music. One nonprofit organization through which he helps them is Nomad Two Worlds.

One of Hugh's biggest passions is trying to put an end to extreme poverty. He is regularly involved with the Global Citizens Festival, and will be hosting its charity concert September 27, 2014.
Why Hugh Supports the Global Poverty Project

As an Ambassador for World Vision, Hugh Urges Others to Help with Haiti Relief

Additionally, Hugh supports several causes such as R U OK day, which encourages suicide awareness and being sensitive to what others may be going through, and also Everyone Matters, which encourages people "to judge others less, see the humanity in everyone, and emphasize that everyone has the right to be who they are." He also significantly contributes to charity organizations that promote meditation and provide guidance for traumatized military veterans and underprivileged inner city children. Hugh also is passionate about preserving and understanding different cultures (in fact, Hugh himself is an ambassador for Seoul, Korea and a Micromax brand ambassador for India), and he is a strong supporter of The Urban Zen Foundation, which aims to "inspire change in the areas of well-being, preserving cultures and empowering children."

Everything an actor puts into a performance is rooted in who they are themselves, in their own personality and nature and identity. An actor's ability to portray a role is limited by who and what they are. As such, it's very important to get actors of the right backgrounds to portray roles. I've seen so many cases of people who are not Irish making a mess of playing Irish characters, and I'm not just talking about accents. Similarly, I've seen many cases of British actors totally screwing up in trying to portray American characters. You said "if one has the ability to portray a role" -I don't think many such people don't have the ability with many roles they take, because they convey the wrong nationality or whatever when playing the role. Addiotionally, it's wrong to take roles that are important to specific ethnic/national groups when one is not a member of the group. That's theft.

There's already speculation that a new Wolverine will be cast, but I have no idea who this guy is because I've never heard of him before.

!!! He's a likeable enough kid, but he's a wimpy young kid. He'd be totally wrong for the role. It seems I really will be boycotting Disney's X-Men films.

Here he is:

Thanks, sum1. Well, nothing's confirmed yet, this is just a rumor. I know they're not gonna be making any X-Men film for a while.

Wolverine needs to be older and able to come off very very hard. You need somebody hard-boiled, not some pretty boy kid who gives the impression he'll never grow up.

I agree. But this is Hollywood's agenda to feminize and emasculate men in order to discourage "toxic masculinity."
