I agree, that was a phenomenon of the 1960s. None of the sequels in the 1970s were all that good either.

There's been all these horrible movies in franchise this century. I admit, I'm judging them from afar, because I never saw anything more than trailers, but my impression of them has not been favourable. I keep wondering why anybody bothers to watch them.
