Tomorrow they start a four game series against the Nationals.

why play the same team over and over again?

Because teams have to establish records against other teams in their division and in their league. That determines their placement at the end of a season as to who makes it to the postseason and who doesn't. It also prevents the league from the hassle of having to do tiebreakers which would have to get added to the schedule at the end of a season if teams have the same record. If the Phillies and Braves play each other 20 times in a season, and the Phillies win 12 out of those 20 games, the Phillies will have a better record against a division rival and would automatically win a tiebreaker if the two teams had the same record at the end of the season.
