The 1994 version was good, but could've been better. I read the book at the beginning and middle is good, but it falls apart at the end. __________________

the new one. I know I've seen the old one at some point, but I don't remember much of it

Well, let me clue you in on one thing... the new version miscast Larry Underwood, obviously. Woke Hollywood strikes again.
See, my problem is this: not only is race-switching characters disrespectful to writers of intellectual properties and their fans, but it's also practically an implication of mediocrity, that underrepresented minorities have no stories of their own to tell or histories of their own to explore. Casting non-white actors as white characters created by white writers in stories written by white writers, or as characters based on real people, or historical figures, is not real diversity, it's fake diversity. You can slap a Ferrari body on a Corvette frame, but it's still a Corvette. People have to be given the opportunity to create their own stories, their own characters, their own mythologies. I get that they want to promote diversity and inclusion, but as usual, they do the wrong thing for the right reason. __________________

Oh? I generally agree with what you said, only in this case, I don't see that one as an important character. He could be a goat for how much I care about him.

Well, Larry was a rock star in the novel, and his character was a white guy who made it on the west coast but who squandered his early success by being stupid and selfish and went home to New York to visit his mother while his buddy in LA helped him out with his financial problems while he was away and laying low. His mother even told him that he "sounded black" on his album, which is part of what made his character another white musician who evoked a soulful sound when he sang. Making the character black just makes it seem like erasure, like the idea of white artists with that sound(which are plentiful) are now inappropriate. This "stay in your lane" mentality is despicable.
And Larry Underwood was a hugely important character in the book. He's practically the lead male character. Unlike Stu Redman, Larry is the one who grows and changes as a character, going from a self-absorbed rock star to a leader, a father figure, and a hero who confronts Randall Flagg at the end. The TV versions never did him justice, to be honest. __________________
